Chapter 171
Rachel’s POV
That’s my stepmother’s voice! What is she doing here?!
This reminds me of the note Daniel gave me a few days ago and when Selena caught me preparing money.
At this point, the more I tried to cover up, the more suspicious it would seem.
So I sighed and decided to weave a believable story.
Selena sat beside me. “Dear, are you all right? You’ve been acting… a bit different lately. Is this about your Alpha?”
Selena was perceptive. I knew my behavior throughout the day had been unusual. I needed to provide some reasonable explanation:
“Well… you caught me.” My voice caught in my throat as I spoke, the words coming out choked with emotion. I lowered my head, letting my long hair fall forward, partially hiding my face.
“Oh, dear. Would you mind sharing what’s troubling you?”
“Selena,” I stated. “I was thinking about how I could prepare more resources… for the baby.”
She clearly hadn’t expected this answer.
“My due date is getting closer, and I’m starting to feel anxious.” I stroked my belly, As someone without Luna status, I worry that if… if Nathan decides he doesn’t want me…
Oh, dear, you’ll be fine.” Selena comforted me gently. “You have Carter’s protection, our care… and, I can tell Carter cares deeply for you.”
“That sounds nice, but I don’t know why. I’m just a bit uneasy.”
“It’s normal,” Selena said with a smile. “It’s an instinctive response for pregnant omegas, wanting to prepare abundant resources and a safe nest for their
child.”
“Are you sure?” I asked, worry flickering in my eyes.
“Of course, Rachel. Don’t overthink it.”
“I guess you’re right,‘ I said with a yawn. “I can’t believe how easily I get tired.”

*Rest well, dear. Pregnant Omegas need more sleep. It’s demanding, both physically and emotionally.”
I considered her suggestion, deciding a nap was a good idea.
After all, I needed to gather strength, to prepare myself mentally for facing the shadows of my past alone. Deep inside, I longed for my fated mate’s protection. I must be strong, I told myself. For my baby, for Nathan… even if he’ll never know.
The market was still bustling in the twilight of the following day. I kept my head down, arranging the handicrafts on my stall, my knuckles turning white beneath the fabric as I clenched my fists.
That familiar shadow loomed over me again, and Daniel’s rough voice, laced with alcohol, hit my ear. “Hand over the money, bitch.”
I gritted my teeth as I neatly stacked the scattered bills I’d earned today. He snatched the money pouch, and I caught a whiff of cheap perfume lingering on
his sleeve.
“Smart move,” he smirked triumphantly, his rough palm messing up my hair, his metal ring scraping painfully against my scalp. “Good girl.”
I lowered my gaze to hide the hatred surging in my eyes, letting his laughter fade into the crowd.

Chapter 171
The evening breeze swept up scraps of fabric from my stall, but couldn’t blow away the crescent shaped blondy marks my nails had left in my palms. This demon had no idea that as he greedily swallowed the bait, fangs would also pierce his own throat.
The memory faded, I came back to reality as Carter and I both snapped to attention, eyes wide as we turned toward the window.
“What the hell?” Carter muttered. “Stay here,” he commanded, his military commander tone taking over.
1 ignored his instruction and followed him as he moved to investigate what was happening in the front yard.
I knew his guards were outside and could protect us if needed, but when we stepped out, I saw the guards restraining a middle–aged woman who was struggling to break free from their grip.
“There she is! The murderer! You goddamn bitch!” the woman screamed.
Isabel?” I gasped, my voice coming out as an icy whisper. I couldn’t believe she was here.
