“Something doesn’t feel right,‘ he said. “Keep an eye on those witnesses.”
“Is there a problem with them? I asked, unsure what he was getting at.
“I hope I’m just overthinking this, Nathan said. “We decided to investigate, and then we got evidence.”
Then I understood his concern. “Too easily? You mean it was too easy for us?”
‘Yes. As if it was handed to us,” Nathan confirmed.
“Alpha, I don’t understand. If someone was helping us, what would be their purpose?” I was genuinely confused.
Nathan shook his head, which was rare–he almost always had clear answers.
All the evidence pointing to Madison had come too easily, as if someone knew Nathan and Tyler had started investigating. To distract them, evidence was ‘delivered” one after another.
If that was the case, whoever was behind this might have eliminated anything they didn’t want Nathan and Tyler to discover.
“We need to refocus on the war, Nathan said, leaning back in his chair. “How long until her due date?”
The sudden change in topic caught me off guard. “About three weeks… but technically, it could happen anytime.”
Nathan walked to the window, clenching his fist and lightly punching the wall. He said nothing, but I knew he must be incredibly anxious.
Rachel had Nathan’s entire heart, and she was about to give birth to his child.
Alpha, are you sure you don’t want us to…” I began.
“I want to, more than anything,” Nathan interrupted. “But Tyler, if I go to her this time, I will never return to Emerald City. Do you understand?”
I was shocked. “Alpha?”
1 Rachel likes a quiet, simple life,” Nathan murmured, almost to himself. “I can’t drag her back into this mess of bloody politics and war. I have to wait…”
I sighed. “Yes, sir. Do you need me to do anything for you?”
“Let them know I’ll be back at the front lines tomorrow,” Nathan instructed.
“So soon?” I couldn’t hide my surprise.
“Yes, I can’t wait, Nathan replied, shaking his head.
‘Understood, Alpha.”
As I turned to leave, Nathan called my name in an unusually gentle, calm tone. “Thank you, bro.”
The unexpected warmth made me uncomfortable. “Nathan, don’t scare me!”
He laughed. “Get out of here.”
I left the room, closing the door behind me. Through the gap, I caught a glimpse of Nathan leaning against the window frame. it was nearly sunset, and his shadow stretched long across the floor. He looked profoundly alone.
“Tyler!” Victoria’s voice called out as I walked down the hallway, making me stop and turn around.

Chapter 181
My sister hurried toward me, her face flushed with excitement,
“Slow down, Victoria,” I said as she reached me, breathless.
“Where is she?!” Victoria demanded, her eyes wide with urgency.
I knew immediately who she meant. While people from outside our pack might avoid prying into this sensitive topic concerning Nathan, those who had been close to Rachel–like Victoria–were different.
I gestured for her to follow me into my room.
*Victoria, I’m sorry, but even though I know, I can’t tell you until Alpha approves,” I explained once we were inside. “It’s for her safety. We need to maintain the status quo until we’re sure everything is secure.
I shrugged off my jacket and loosened my tie further. “Madison’s choice in clothes is really uncomfortable.”
Victoria processed this information, her eyes widening. “So now that Madison’s situation is resolved, Rachel will come home soon, right? There’s no reason for her to stay away anymore, is there?”
I knew how much my sister missed Rachel–we all did–but I shook my head. “Not now, Victoria.”
“Why?” she pressed.
“She doesn’t want to come back,” I admitted.
Victoria looked crestfallen, her eyes dropping to the floor.
I sighed, stepped forward, and gave her a small hug. “I know how much you want to see Rachel. Nathan is working on it. Give him time.”
Victoria hugged me back and nodded. When she stepped away, I was relieved to see her smile returning, though her eyes were moist. “Tyler, I’m so happy… just knowing she’s alive and safe makes me so happy!”
“Me too, sister,” I said. “Now, let’s do what we can to help Nathan win this war as quickly as possible.”
