Chapter 196
Rachel’s POV
The air grew cooler as we continued our journey north, the vegetation gradually shifting to tall pine trees that stretched toward the sky.
I held my son close to my chest, his tiny body warin against mine as Selena led us deeper into unfamiliar territory.
At least I still have my
“Look at those big trees, sweetie,” I whispered to my son, who gazed up with wide, curious eyes.
His innocent wonder at the world around him gave me strength to keep moving forward.
I still wasn’t entirely sure if trusting Selena was the right choice, but she had been more forthcoming than either Nathan or Carter. Still, doubt gnawed at me.
“Are you sure we’re safe out here?” I asked for what must have been the third time.
Selena’s lips tightened slightly. “This will be dangerous, but we’re approaching a fork in the road soon.” She glanced at my
son, her expression softening. “Wo you like me to hold him for a while? You must be tired.”
“No,” I replied quickly, tightening my grip. “I’ve got him.”
The weight of my child in my arms was the only thing keeping me grounded in this chaos. Until he was born, I never truly
understood what unconditional love felt like.
Now, I would do anything to keep him safe.
“Once we reach that small town,” Selena said, pointing ahead, you and the little one can rest for the night.”
After another hour of walking, Selena suddenly slowed her pace. “This way…” she whispered, gesturing toward a rickety
wooden bridge spanning a narrow ravine.
I hesitated, eyeing the weathered planks with suspicion. “Won’t crossing that expose us?”
“Unfortunately, being out in the open isn’t safe, but we must cross this bridge,” Selena explained. “I think we’ve lost
Carter’s men, but we need to be careful of rogues.”
The term made my skin crawl. I’d heard stories about rogue werewolves–wolves without packs, often dangerous and desperate.
They are particularly brutal.
“Hurry now, we must go,” Selena urged.
We were halfway across the bridge when I heard male voices in the distance. My heart leapt into my throat.
“Selena–someone’s coming,” I whispered, instinctively ducking lower.
We quickly retreated into the shadows of the trees lining the bridge.

I pressed my son against my chest, praying he wouldn’t cry. With war approaching, warriors and vicious rogues were everywhere. No place felt safe.
Stay here,” Selena ordered. “I’ll see what we’re dealing with.”
“She disappeared into the underbrush, moving with surprising agility for her age. When she returned minutes later, her
expression was tense.
“We need to find another way… it’s Carter’s men,” she whispered
My heart sank. Why wouldn’t Carter leave me alone? What did he want from me–from my son?
“I’ll draw them away,” Selena said firmly.
“No, you can’t…” I protested. “If they catch you-”
“They won’t,” she replied with unexpected confidence. “You must trust that an old woman knows what she’s doing.”
I wasn’t convinced. “But-”
“I promise, I know them better than they think. I’ll be fine.” Her eyes held mine, steady and determined.
After a moment’s hesitation, I nodded. What choice did I have?
“When and where do I meet you?” I asked.
“Follow this path and take the right fork at the crossroads. I’ll lead Carter’s men to the left. Go to the inn–I’ll find you
there.”
She pressed a folded piece of paper into my hand. “If I’m not back by morning, follow these instructions. Someone will guide you to a village where you’ll be safe.”
I didn’t like the finality in her voice. “It sounds like you’re saying goodbye.”
Selena’s protection and her words about wanting to sacrifice herself suddenly made
reluctant
to leave.
She interrupted me abruptly just as I was going to say something.
“Just a precaution,” Selena assured me, though her smile didn’t reach her eyes. “Now go, quickly!”
She slipped away, deliberately making noise to draw attention.
Soon I heard men shouting and the sound of pursuit moving away from my hiding place.
Several men passed within feet of where I crouched with my son, but they didn’t spot us.
When I was certain they were gone, I exhaled shakily and kissed my son’s forehead. “Let’s get you somewhere safe, baby.”
I moved cautiously along the edge of the forest as Selena had instructed, finally spotting a village in the distance.
The inn was exactly as she’d described–a tall building with a thatched roof and white walls.

The place was busy enough that I blended in without drawing attention.
A friendly waitress approached as soon as I entered, almost as if she’d been expecting me.
This way, miss,” she said quietly, leading me upstairs to a room without even asking for payment.
Inside, I was surprised to find everything prepared–including a crib for my son. Selena had thought of everything. I tipped the waitress, who smiled and left me to settle in.
For the first time in days, I felt somewhat safe. I placed my sleeping son in the crib and treated myself to a hot shower, washing away the grime of travel.
When he woke, I gave him a bubble bath in the sink and fed him before settling him back to sleep.
As darkness fell, I lay on the bed watching my son’s peaceful face, my thoughts racing. I had done everything for him–left my home, trusted strangers, fled across territories.
All I wanted was for him to have a normal, peaceful life.
But I was beginning to realize that might never be possible.
He was born special–the son of an Alpha, possibly the future of the pack, a potential heir who could change the fate of the Eastern Territories.
There would always be someone who wanted to use him or take him.
As his mother, all I could do was protect him, love him, and raise him to be a good person despite the chaos around him.
A gentle knock at the door startled me awake. Thinking it might be Selena, I hurried to open it, only to find the waitress from earlier.
“Miss, I’ve come to warn you,” she whispered urgently. “There are people looking for you. They’ve entered the village and will be here soon.”
My sleepiness vanished instantly. “What about Selena?”
“I don’t know,” she admitted. “But you need to leave now.”
My hands trembled as I quickly strapped my son into the carrier against my chest and shouldered my backpack.
“What’s the fastest way out of the village?” I asked, my voice steadier than I felt.
The waitress handed me a map. “East, miss. Here’s a map.”
I glanced out the window and spotted an SUV at the end of the road.
These people were coming for my son! He represented the future of the pack, and I would not let anyone use him as a
pawn.
“This way, miss,” the waitress offered. “Follow me! There’s a cabin in the forest where you can spend the rest of the night.”
Without hesitation, I followed her, once again on the run.
