Chapter 198
I forced myself to move forward, one careful step at a time.
Just as I reached the edge of the small porch, Mia’s voice cut though my thoughts like a knife.
“Alpha! We just received an urgent message from King Jason and Beta Tyler!*
I gritted my teeth, frustration surging through me. “Not now. Ma, wait. I just need fifteen minutes. I’ll be right back.”
I was so close.
The cabin door was right there.
My family was right there.
“Alpha, Emerald City is under attack. King Jason, the Queen, everyone is in danger!” Her voice was panicked, something I rarely heard from Mia. “Emerald City is being attacked by Dylan. We don’t know how, but the city is in danger.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. Emerald City? Under attack?
How was that possible?
We’d been monitoring the western forces closely. There was no way they could have mounted a full–scale assault without us knowing.
“Damn it, damn it, damn it!” I snarled under my breath, my fists clenching at my sides.
I stood frozen before the cabin, torn between the two halves of my life. Rachel and my son were just beyond that door, so close I could almost feel them.
But my people–thousands of innocent lives–were in danger!
If I brought Rachel and our son back to Emerald City now, I’d be taking them straight into danger.
And if Alpha Dylan was behind the attack, he might use my child to exact revenge.
“I’m in the woods…” I sent back to Mia through our link. “Get everyone ready.”
I couldn’t hesitate any longer.
“Damn it,” I whispered, knowing I had no alternative. I had to return to Emerald City immediately.
“Alpha, we’re all waiting in the SUV for you. As soon as you get back, we can leave,” Mia informed me as I made my way back to the village, my steps heavy with regret.
“Good. I’ll be back in the village in a few minutes,” I replied.
Each step away from that cabin felt like I was leaving a piece of myself behind. I hadn’t even had the chance to speak to Rachel, to explain that Carter had lied to her.
But I couldn’t give her hope and then immediately leave her. When we reunited, it needed to be for good.

Chapter 198
For now, I had to focus on protecting the King and the innocen lives at stake.
When I reached Mia, her face was tense with worry.
Any details?” I asked, forcing my mind to shift from Rachel to the crisis at hand.
“Not much,” she admitted. “Just that the city is under attack and they need reinforcements immediately.”
I nodded, trying to process this unexpected development. “Contact Tyler. Tell him to meet us with his men at the north gate of Emerald City.”
As we climbed into the SUV, Mia’s brow furrowed in thought. “Alpha… do you think the battle we won at the front was just
a show?”
I shook my head. “No, I was there. That was real. Mia, tell Noah to handle things at the front. I don’t think they could have moved all their forces from the western coast to Emerald City without us knowing.”
“You’re saying you think the siege on Emerald City is just a bluff?”
“They’re fighting across the sea,” I explained, my strategic mind taking over. “Time works against them, especially now that we’ve cut off their supply lines. They’re more desperate to end this war than we are!”
Mia’s eyes lit up with understanding. “Alpha, do you think this is their final attempt? Once we defend Emerald City, we win the war?”
I didn’t answer, though I hoped she was right. But something told me it wouldn’t be that simple.
As we sped toward Emerald City, I cast one last look back.
