Chapter 222
I positioned my forces in a defensive line as
moved into the forest to meet the threat.
Minutes passed in tense silence. Then, glowing red eyes appeared between the trees. The enemy had arrived.
My assessment was quick–this didn’t seem like the entire rogue pack.
Either they were testing our strength, or they had split their forces to attack from multiple directions.
“Watch the flanks!” I commanded through the mind link.
The rogues charged forward, howling and snarling. Their matted fur was filthy, tongues lolling between sharp feeth as saliva dripped from their ines.
Many had blood smeared across their faces or chests. Their eyes held nothing but madness.
Mia and Joe had been right–these rogues were savage and uncontrolled.
A massive light–gray male lunged toward me. I met the charge head–on, ramming my right shoulder into the wolf’s chest.
The impact sent the rogue tumbling, his head cracking against a tree trunk, momentarily stunned.
Come on, I thought, readying myself as the rogue staggered to his feet.
The wolf shook his head before charging again. I leapt forward, my jaws clamping around his neck. He kicked with his hind legs, pushing me off.
I held firm, and both of us fell, with me underneath. With a powerful roll, I flipped our positions, my claws tearing into his back.
He howled in pain. I attacked his neck again, my hind legs securing his body. The second bite was fatal.
I looked around, searching for any of my wolves who needed help. I spotted Victoria struggling against a massive female rogue.
A warrior was already fighting two other wolves nearby, unable to assist her.
I sprinted across the battlefield, slamming into the female wolf just as she was about to clamp her jaws on Victoria’s shoulder. The impact sent the rogue rolling.
When she regained her footing, I realized this must be the leader Mia had mentioned. Blood stained her muzzle and chest.
I lunged at her, my claws digging into her foreleg, but she was stronger than she looked. She kicked me away with her hind legs.
The female stared at me with rage–filled eyes, and something about her gaze seemed oddly familiar. The momentary distraction nearly cost me as she lunged again.
I snapped back to focus, determined to take her down and end this battle,
But instead of attacking me again, the female turned and fled deeper into the forest.
I pursued for a few steps before stopping, realizing she might be leading me into a trap.
I didn’t want to find out what might be waiting out there. Instead, I raced back to the battlefield.
Many of the rogues were retreating now. This felt more like a skirmish than a true battle. I knew they would return.
Tyler finished off a black male he’d been fighting–the last enemy standing. The rest of the rogues had either fled or fallen.
“Nine rogues down, Tyler reported after shifting back to human form. “We lost four of our own. Three more are injured.”

“Damn it,” I muttered, noticing that all the casualties were from my original pack, not from the rques who had recently jotend my.
“Where did they go?” Tyler asked, scanning the trees.
‘I’m not sure,” I replied, shilting back as well.
“Should we pursue them?” Tyler’s voice held eagerness to finish the fight.
“Yes… but they’re crafty. Have Joe track them, but don’t attack. Wait for my command.”
Tyler frowned. “Why?”
“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I just have a bad feeli
“Alpha! A warrior called from several yards away. “I
found something…
I approached to find Tyler and Victoria already there, both looking worried.
Could you come over here?”
The warrior swallowed hard, pointing to a dead wolf. “Alpha… I know this guy. He’s one of King Jason’s secret agents.”
