Chapter 223
Carter’s POV
I ran my hand along the rough–hewn countertop, mentally noting improvements I wanted to make.
The roof needed patching in one corner, and I could reorganize the kitchen area to make better use of the spare.
*Not bad for a new start, I murmured, taking a deep breath of the air.
It was strange how quickly life had changed. Just weeks ago, I’d been plotting and scheming, using Rachel as a pawn in my elaborate game against Nathan and King Jason.
Now, I found myself grateful for her mercy and the chance at a different life. My thoughts drifted to my uncle, to Mathan, to all the complicated webs &
spun.
The peace of the moment shattered when a familiar voice echoed in my mind.
“Boss, you around?”
I nearly dropped the mug I was holding. ‘Lucas, you bastard! By the way, how are you feeling? I exclaimed aloud, even though the mind link didn’t require spoken words.
“I’m fine now. That stuff they used on me was really effective. Most of my external wounds have healed. Just took me a while to wake up.*
I snorted, shaking my head. “Then keep sleeping, you idiot!”
“Boss, I’ve been awake and moving for days now… but you seem to be in
a
good mood?”
“Shut up,” I replied, unable to keep the smile from my voice. Despite everything, I was relieved to hear Lucas sounding strong. “If you didn’t need me for two days, what do you need now?‘
“I’m guessing you don’t need me to rescue you from there?”
“No, I don’t need rescuing. I paused, feeling genuinely grateful that Lucas had survived. “What’s up?”
“Actually, I do have news to share. I heard from David that the queen miscarried.”
My lips twitched into a small, satisfied smile. “And what does that have to do with me?”
This wasn’t shocking news. It had been part of my original plan,
The queen had been poisoned years ago, rendering her infertile. I’d managed to obtain Rachel’s blood – with its healing properties – and passed it to David.
The queen had conceived, but I knew her age and poor health made carrying a healthy heir unlikely.
I’d never revealed the source of the blood, of course.
“It doesn’t concern you, Boss. But you might want to warn Rachel, because Jason seems to have figured out where the blood came from.”
My eyes widened, my heart momentarily stopping in my chest. “Shit! How much time do we have?”
“Not much. That’s why I’m contacting you. Jason’s secret agents near the northern border. They te coming f
A cold wave of panic washed over me. If Jason discovered Rachel was the source of the healing blood, she was in grave danger.
The king would stop at nothing to capture/her, especially after losing his child.
I see her locked in a cold, stone dungeon, shackled and her veins repeatedly pierced, blood drained for sinister rituals.
Chapter 223
Her once radiant face now pale as death, eyes filled with fear. The pleas to the Moon Goddess fall on deaf ears
The helplessness and agony for her and her son ignite my anger and despair.
I dream of embracing them, het warmth against me, her son safe and sound.
Suddenly, Rachel looks at me, tears in her eyes, Why do you keep hurting me?‘
I shake my head, choked up, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to!”
Lucas asked, “Are you okay?”
The illusion shatters, I jolt awake, a salty taste in my mouth, realizing tears have run dry.
1 replied, “I’ll handle it. You stay safe and keep a low profile. Thanks, brother.”
“Don’t mention it… I don’t like owing a lady my life anyway.”
I broke the mind link and immediately bolted for the door. I had to warn Rachel before it was too late. As I burst outside, several guards immediately surrounded me, weapons drawn and faces hostile.
“Where do you think you’re going?” one snarled, stepping forward.
‘I need to see Queen Rachel. It’s an emergency,” I replied, my voice tight with urgency,
A second guard scoffed. “You don’t deserve to be near our queen. You should have been executed… only her mercy saved you.”
I felt my patience wearing thin. Every second wasted was a second Rachel was in danger.
“Move aside, or I’ll remove you myself,” I warned, my muscles tensing as I prepared to shift.
*Enough!”
The commanding female voice cut through the tension.
‘Leave us,” she ordered the guards, who reluctantly backed away.
‘I must find Rachel. This is important,” I said as soon as they were alone.
Selena’s eyes narrowed with annoyance. “No, you don’t get to make demands, Carter.”
‘She’s in danger.”
“She’s not here,” Selena replied, her expression softening slightly with concern. “She left not long ago for the front lines.”
Fear spread through my chest like ice water. Rachel was put there, exposed, while Jason’s agents were closing in.
“We need to call her back!”
“Why should I believe she’s in danger?” Selena asked, studying my face.
“King Jason’s queen lost the baby. He’s now searching for Rachel, intending to use all her blood to heal his wife.” My words came out in a rush. “We have to find her before they do.”
Selena’s eyes widened in shock. “Damn it, Carter. What have you done?!”
Guilt stabbed at me. This was my fault. I’d set these events in motion, and now Rachel would pay the price if I didn’t act quickly.
‘I am really sorry. We need to find her before they do,” I repeated, desperation creeping into my voice.
Chapter 223
How do I know you’re telling the truth and not working with Jason? Selena demanded.
‘Look, I’m not trying to cause trouble… honestly I’m trying to fix it… I just want her safe. I ran a hand through my hair, frustration mounting it as st help me protect your queen, then I’ll do it myself. Let me through.”
Selena hesitated. “I’ll send someone to confirm this, but Carter, you should stay here.
“Damn it, there’s no time! Don’t you understand?!” I shouted, my patience snapping.
In one fluid motion, I shifted into my wolf form, my clothes tearing as my body transformed, I stood before Selena, my golden eyes fixed on her as i let out
low howl.
a
“Arroooooo!”
Several warriors rushed forward, ready to subdue me, but Selena held up her hand. ‘Let him go, but follow him. She looked directly into my eyes. “Carter, please don’t disappoint her again.”
I didn’t wait for further permission. I bounded past the guards, my powerful legs carrying me swiftly through the trees.
My mind was consumed by a single thought: I had to find Rachel before Jason’s men did.
For the first time in my life, I was acting not out of self–interest, but to protect someone else.
