Chapter 228
What does he mean, he has nothing? Isn’t he with Madison? Did he bring me here just to beal, or does he have some other plan to use me?
“Nathan,” I said stiffly, I appreciate you saving me.”
‘I sense a but coming?‘ His eyebrow arched.
But I can recover at home,” I finished.
“It’s not safe out there,” he stated flatly. “That’s why you were attacked in the first place.”
“Now that we know, we won’t make the same mistake again,” I countered.
Nathan frowned, his jaw tightening. “Rachel, just let me help you.”
“I don’t need your help!”
“Yes, you do,” he said firmly. “I’ll have Gina bring the baby for feeding, but afterward, you’re going back to sleep.”
I stared at him, shocked and angry. Who does he think he is? This is my land! I’m the rightful ruler here, and he thinks he can waltz back in and start giving me orders?
Nathan turned and ducked out of the tent without another word.
Minutes later, he returned with Gina, who carried my son in her arms.
I reached for him eagerly, clutching him to my chest and kissing the top of his head. He grabbed a fistful of my copper hair and squealed happily.
“Thank you, Gina,” I said warmly, deliberately ignoring Nathan who stood watching us, his gaze unwavering.
My son was hungry. I prepared to nurse him, then looked up to see Nathan’s eyes still fixed on us. I waited for him to take the hint and leave.
He didn’t.
“Excuse me,” I said through gritted teeth, ‘could I have some privacy please?”
“Why?” Nathan asked bluntly.
‘Because… because…‘ I sputtered, at a loss for words.
Gina burst out laughing and pushed her brother toward the exit. “Come on, brother. Do you want your son to starve?”
Once I was sure Nathan had left, I began nursing my son.
As he settled contentedly, a small smile crossed my face for the first time since waking.
Gina closed the flap and sat cross–legged on the floor beside my cot. “How are you feeling?” she asked gently.
“Better,” I replied, gazing down at my nursing child. “Not hurting anymore, but a little dizzy. How did I get here?”
Gina explained that rogues had attacked our forces, and Nathan had arrived to drive them back.
While our people regrouped, Nathan had told Selena he was taking me to his camp to rest, and had brought me here despite protests.
I sighed in frustration. “I don’t understand, Gina. Why is he keeping me here?”
“Rachel, don’t you know?” Gina’s expression softened. “He cares about you, but he doesn’t know how to handle it. He is banished by fason…

Chapter 228
I don’t want to feel sorry for him anymore. Whatever happened between him and Jason, he deserved it.
I said, “I get that he might want to see his son.
“He loves you, Rachel, Gina said simply.
I rolled my eyes. “Oh, that’s too bad. Clearly, things didn’t work out with Madison.”
“No, they didn’t, Gina agreed, “but he never wanted to marry her in the first place.”
“Then he can just find someone else,‘ I snapped. “Where is his mate? Why doesn’t he spend his time looking for his destined mate so he can leave me alone?”
Gina’s expression grew serious. “He can’t find his mate, Rachel, because he can’t feel her.”
I frowned. “Why not?”
“When our mother and my father died,” Gina explained, “Nathan was so disappointed in what our mother did to us that he swore to the Moon Goddess he’d never take a mate. He didn’t want to be blinded by love like our father was.”
“Yes, I remember Tyler telling me,‘ I said. “I thought it was just a lifestyle choice.”
“No, it’s more than that. I think the Moon Goddess must have heard him–she took away his mate bond. Even if his mate was standing right in front of him, he wouldn’t feel it!”
I took a deep breath, stunned by the revelation. “Really?” Gina nodded solemnly.
I looked down at my son, my mind whirling. Once, I’d hoped I might be Nathan’s destined mate. Now I knew he could never have that happiness with
anyone,
Rachel? Are you okay?” Gina asked gently.
‘Yes, I’m fine,” I said with a faint smile.
Without a mate bond, could Nathan ever truly love? I wondered.
“It’ll be okay, Rachel,‘ Gina said softly.
I nodded and sighed.
