Kathleen swallowed nervously, then finally voiced her suspicions.

She said, “I got rid of all the evidence back then, but I can’t be sure the director didn’t keep something. Plus, after Ivanna’s suicide, there must still be files at the station. Maybe Maxine’s already found something.”

She glanced around anxiously, making sure no one was nearby, then lowered her voice. “If you can, I’d deal with her as soon as possible while the Mason family still isn’t paying much attention to her.”
Her words made Gabriel pause.
As troublesome as Kathleen could be, she was right this time.
Maxine was like a ticking time bomb. If they just ignore her, she’d blow everything up sooner or later.
“You don’t need to worry about it,” Gabriel said, “I’ll handle this. Just focus on getting in good with the Mason family. I’ve put a lot of effort into you, Kathleen. Don’t let me down.”
After hanging up, Kathleen tried to calm her nerves and still sent Sebastian a message. [Are you free tonight? I was hoping to take you and Brian out for a bit.]
It was a long time before Sebastian replied: [He has homework tonight.]
Unwilling to give up, Kathleen set her phone aside. After work, she stopped by a bakery nearby to pick up some cookies kids love, then caught a cab to the Mason family.
Maxine set aside the files she’d just finished organizing. It was time to pick up Jessica. She stood up, rolled her neck to loosen up, and glanced out the window.
Outside, everything was shrouded in gray, rain streaming down the glass.
At some point, it had started pouring. Thinking of how little and fragile Jessica was, Maxine decided she’d better drive to pick her up from school today. Kids could catch colds so easily. She didn’t want to deal with that headache.
There weren’t many people out, and the road was full of puddles, so Maxine was driving pretty slowly. Just as she reached a quieter stretch, she spotted a sedan speeding up behind her.

Her heart jumped. She instinctively jerked the wheel to the right, but it was already too late. The two cars slammed into each other with a loud bang.
Her car hit the other car’s trunk. Then a skinny guy got out of the driver’s seat, walked over to her window, and knocked, looking annoyed. “What’s wrong with you? You scratched my car!” he snapped.
Maxine got out, glanced at the spot where the cars collided, and pulled out her phone. “Let’s take some photos for the record. You can call the police, and I’ll get in touch with my insurance company,” she said.
She’d been driving normally. The other guy was the one who suddenly sped up and caused the crash. Any investigation would show it was his fault, so there was no point wasting time arguing right now.
The man’s face changed the moment he saw her lift her phone to take pictures, and he immediately reached out, trying to snatch it away.
Maxine reacted fast, pulling her hand back before he could touch her. “What do you think you’re doing?”
The man glared at her, his tone fierce. “You hit my car and now you’re trying to dodge responsibility?”
Maxine let out a helpless sigh. “The police will sort out who’s at fault when they get here. Right now, I’m just taking photos

Pretty soon, students from the nearby school would be getting out, and if their cars were still there, it would cause a traffic jam.
But the man clearly wasn’t having it. As if something just occurred to him, he pulled a knife out of his pocket, his face twisted with hostility. “Don’t even think about running! Don’t think I don’t know. People like you, with money, always have some trick up your sleeve. You’re just looking for an excuse not to pay!”
