When he left, Maxine even went with Sidney to see him off at the airport. Sidney, who’s usually the definition of a tough woman, was crying her eyes out She was so heartbroken that Louis, who’d already gone through the gate, almost turned around just to comfort her.
Even now, whenever Maxine thought about how hard it was for those two to say goodbye, she still couldn’t help but crack up.
Maxine asked, “So what was so urgent that Louis had to rush home for back then?”
At that, Sidney just looked exasperated. “His older brother’s an artist who left home ages ago, his second sister is always off backpacking, and Louis ran off to Hatholand. No one wanted to take over the family business.”
Just like in all those over–the–top CEO stories, the family business was booming, but nobody wanted to run it. Louis’s dad tricked his second sister into coming back to handle things, but then she claimed there was some emergency at home and called Louis back instead.
Sidney couldn’t help but laugh and shake her head. “He only managed to come back to Hatholand after negotiating with his sister.”
After she finished speaking, she glanced at the two kids standing nearby. “These two are adorable! Are they yours?”
Maxine nodded. “I’ve been married for years. Having kids is pretty normal, right?”
Sidney crouched down and gave little Jessica’s cheek a gentle pinch. “If I had to give birth, I’d probably die of fright.”
Kathleen watched the two of them chatting away, completely leaving her out. She clenched her teeth in frustration but had to swallow it down. “Maxine, aren’t you going to introduce us? This is…”
Before Maxine could say anything, Sidney cut in with mock surprise, “Wow, you’re still here?”
Both Kathleen and Maxine felt speechless.
Kathleen took a deep breath, realizing she couldn’t stick around any longer. She forced a polite smile and said, “Sorry, I have something to take care of,
so I’ll head out first.”
Watching her make a hasty exit, Sidney clicked her tongue. “Where did you even find someone like that? Don’t tell me she’s that bitch from your wedding?”
Sidney still remembered that girl in a white dress at Maxine’s wedding. As one of Sebastian’s friends, she kept going on and on about him during her speech, like she was terrified Maxine might treat him badly.
After all these years, Kathleen looked so much older that Sidney didn’t even recognize her at first.
Sidney cut straight to the point, “If it were up to me, I’d bury her alive.”
Just then, Louis walked over with two ice creams, catching that last part. He blinked his emerald–green eyes in confusion. “Bury who, darling?”
“Hey, handsome mister!” Jessica piped up.
Louis winked at her. “And who’s this little angel?”
He handed an ice cream to Sidney, ruffled Jessica’s hair, then looked over at Brian. “And here’s our little prince.”
Sidney burst out laughing. “Louis, take a look/Recognize her?”
Louis stared at Maxine for a long moment, then his eyes went wide. “No way, Maxine, is that you?”
