Sebastian frowned, his voice firm and cold. “You brought this on yourself, Kathleen. There’s nothing I can do.”
He had seen all the posts flooding the internet. If he stepped in now to silence public opinion, it would be a slap in the face to those victims who had already been denied justice once. He couldn’t do it–not for her. Not anymore.
And now that he’d realized he had wronged Maxine all this time, there was no reason to keep pushing back against her for someone like Kathleen. The car crash, the guilt, the debt–they were all in the past. It was time to let it go.
But Kathleen, hearing the finality in his voice, suddenly snapped. Her tone turned sharp and vicious. “You’re all pushing me! You want me dead? Fine! I’ll give you what you want!”
Before Sebastian could even get a word in, the call was cut.
He stared at his phone, his brow twitching. A sense of unease settled over him. After a moment’s hesitation, he called Charles. “Go check on Kathleen Make sure she doesn’t do anything stupid.”
Charles, sitting in his office at the time, shot to his feet. “On it. I’m leaving now.”
He’d been following the posts too, just like everyone else. Part of him still couldn’t believe Kathleen had done all those things. But if even Sebastian- who’d always been close to her–was keeping his distance this time, then maybe… maybe the rumors were true.
Still, gossip aside, a life was at stake. Grabbing his keys, he rushed out the door.
An hour later, Sebastian’s phone rang. “Mr. Mason,” Charles’s voice came through, low and hesitant. “I’m at Miss Lane’s place.”
He paused, as if weighing his next words carefully, then added in a near–whisper, “What should we do now? The building’s surrounded. People are packed three layers deep.”
Outside, things were a mess. Not just the victims from Kathleen’s old cases demanding answers, but nosy reporters and livestreamers, all hungry for a scandal. They were camped outside, waiting for Kathleen to show her face.
As Charles spoke, Sebastian could hear faint sobs echoing in the background–a woman crying.
Lowering his voice, Charles cupped his hand over the phone. “When I got here… she was about to slit her wrists.”
The implication hung heavy in the air–if he left her alone, who knew what she’d do next?
Even after reading those damning posts, even if part of him believed she deserved it, Charles couldn’t bring himself to just stand by and watch someone
die.
Silence stretched between them before Sebastian finally relented. “Take her somewhere safe. Get her a room in the Nessal District.”
That area was on the outskirts of the city, quieter, with fewer people. It was unlikely anyone would recognize her there. Once the lawsuit was over, he’d arrange to send Kathleen abroad.
Meanwhile, across the city, Maxine was tutoring Jessica, pointing at a math problem. “Take another look at this one…”
Jessica nodded slowly, counting on her fingers with deep concentration. Suddenly, Cleo burst in like a whirlwind. “Maxine! Have you seen what’s happening online? Kathleen’s been fully exposed! Her cases are being dug up one by one–victims are demanding answers left and right.”
Maxine didn’t even look up. “Good work.”
Cleo blinked. “Wait–how’d you know it was me? What if it was some righteous netizen who couldn’t stand the injustice and decided to take action?
Maxine sighed. “You asked me for Kathleen’s case files not long ago. What else were you going to do with them–frame them?”
