Chapter 246
Gina’s expression grew serious. “The warriors are still useful to the kingdom. King Jason knows that.”
I considered this, thinking about the complicated politics at play. “You and Tyler followed Nathan out here. That’s incredibly brave.”
She gave me a sad smile. “We couldn’t stay at the castle. The king would have used us against Nathan.*
“What do you mean?” I frowned, confused.
“Think about it, Rachel.” Victoria’s eyes held a hint of sadness.
The realization dawned on me slowly. “Hostages,” I breathed. “He would have kept you as hostages to control Nathan.”
Gina nodded. “Exactly. And he sent people after us, trying to round us all up.”
“Thank goodness you’re all okay,” I said, squeezing her hand.
A mysterious smile played on Gina’s lips. “We are, because the king sent the wrong person after us.”
“What do you mean?”
“He sent Apollo…” Gina’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “He sent Victoria’s mate!”
My jaw dropped as understanding hit me. “Her mate? Apollo is her mate?”
Gina nodded. “He chose Victoria over his duty. He’s with us now.”
“Oh my God!” I exclaimed. “That’s amazing!”
Victoria deserved happiness, and I was thrilled she had found it.
“What about you?” Gina asked, her expression growing more serious. “I want to hear everything.”
I took a deep breath, trying to decide where to begin. “After I left, I eventually made it to the Nexus pack. They took me in, and when they discovered I was an Alpha’s daughter, they… they made me their leader.”
Gina’s face lit up. “We heard about Nexus! You have no idea how proud we all were! Rachel!”
I felt my cheeks warm at her praise. “I’m still learning, but for the first time in my life, I felt like I belonged somewhere.”
“You’re amazing, Rachel,” Gina said earnestly. “The fact that you stepped in and took leadership immediately just shows what you’re capable of.”
My thoughts turned to my pack members, worry creeping back in. “They must be wondering where I am, if I’m okay….
Gina reached out to squeeze my hand. ‘Give Nathan some time. He loves you, Rachel. I know my brother. He just isn’t a
sweet–talker.”
I couldn’t help the bitter laugh that escaped me. “He has a funny way of showing it.
Chapter 246
Gina’s expression grew troubled. “He doesn’t know how to express his feelings. Ever since we became rogues, anger has been driving his life.”
Something in her tone made me pause. I remembered Nathan shouting at Tyler or Victoria earlier, the rage in his voice. “What happened?”
She hesitated, then sighed heavily. “We fought a battle earlier… he was very unhappy with how some of the new rogues performed in combat, and he ordered their execution.”
I stared at her in shock. “Seriously? But… why would he do that?”
“This isn’t like him, Rachel,” Gina said, her voice low and urgent. “Tyler and Victoria tried to talk him out of it, but he wouldn’t listen. We’re worried he’s losing himself.”
“Losing himself?” I echoed.
Gina nodded gravely. “We’re afraid he’ll become a rogue… a true rogue, if he gives in to his bloodlust. Killing might feel good to him right now, but the more he gives in to that hunger for blood, the faster he loses his soul.”
“…I didn’t know this,” I whispered, stunned by this new information.
Gina leaned forward, her eyes pleading. “Rachel… can you help him?”
“Me?” I asked incredulously.
“Yes, you. Can you talk to him, stop him from killing those men? He’ll listen to you.”
I shook my head in disbelief. “Gina, I’m his prisoner. Nathan doesn’t listen to me.”
“Rachel, you’re different. He will listen to you. I promise.”
I studied her face, seeing the absolute conviction in her eyes. Though I couldn’t understand her confidence, I felt myself nodding. “I don’t know why you have so much faith in me, but yes, I’ll talk to him. I’ll try.”
If there was a chance I could prevent unnecessary bloodshed, I had to take it.
Whatever my feelings toward Nathan, I couldn’t stand by while he executed people for failing to meet his standards in
battle.
What have you become, Nathan?
And why does Gina think I’m the one who can save you?
