Chapter 252
Carter’s POV
Blood!
So much blood!
The battlefield surrounding Nathan’s camp was a nightmare landscape of broken bodies, severed limbs, and crimson-
soaked earth.
The metallic scent hung heavy in the air, mixing with the acrid smell of fear and the musky odor of wolf. I crouched low behind a fallen tree, observing the carnage with calculated detachment.
This was my chance.
With the battle raging and clearly moving southward, Nathan was likely drawing the attackers away from his camp’s center -away from Rachel and his child. I couldn’t have asked for a better distraction.
“You were right,” Selena whispered, materializing beside me in human form. Her dark hair was pulled back in a tight braid, her movements silent and precise as she settled next to my hiding spot. “The fighting is moving away from the central
area.”
I nodded, keeping my voice low, “Nathan’s smart. He’s protecting what matters by drawing them elsewhere.*
Selena’s eyes scanned the battlefield with practiced efficiency. “So what’s our plan?”
“You’re better at sneaking around undetected, and Rachel trusts you more than me,” I explained. “We find her, and if she wants to leave, we get her out before Nathan or his men notice.”
Selena pointed to a large tent in the distance, partially obscured by smaller structures. “You think she’s in there?”
“That’s the one I told you about,” I confirmed with a nod.
We remained in human form for now–without a mind link between us, this was the only way to communicate effectively.
I’d sent word to Nexus about Rachel’s possible location, but requested they only send someone Rachel trusted. Selena had
volunteered immediately.
I’d learned a few tricks from my new friends–a group of wanderers who’d taken me in after I’d left the castle.
They’d taught me how to mask my scent, a skill that was proving invaluable now as Selena and I crept closer to the center
of the camp.
My wanderer allies were scattered throughout the forest, ready to help cover our tracks if needed.
As we approached the tent where I believed Rachel was being kept, we paused behind a stack of supply crate
Two wolves were fighting nearby, their snarls and growls providing additional cover for our movements. A third wolf joined the fray, and the battle moved further away.
We moved forward cautiously, but I quickly realized I’d underestimated Nathan’s protective measures.

Six guards surrounded the tent, all alert despite the chaos elsewhere in the camp.
“Shit,” I muttered under my breath. “If we had more warriors, this would be easier.”
Selena shot me a withering look. “You and I both know that wouldn’t help. Going up against him head–on is basically suicide.”
She was right. Even with the battle raging, Nathan had left his elite warriors to guard Rachel.
We couldn’t take on six of them at once, not even if we shifted. We’d have to wait for another opportunity, though my anxiety grew with each passing minute.
Then something changed. Five wolves approached the central tent–moving with military precision, their coordination unmistakable.
These weren’t random attackers; they were King Jason’s secret operatives!
I didn’t want Rachel hurt, regardless of who reached her first. Part of me hoped Nathan’s guards would hold off the king’s
men.
The clash was immediate and brutal. Nathan’s guards abandoned their posts to intercept the attackers, engaging in a vicious battle that drew them away from the tent.
“Now!” Selena moved first, and I followed close behind.
We slipped into the tent unnoticed, the sounds of battle masking our entrance.
Inside, Rachel stood with her back to a makeshift bed, one arm cradling her infant son, the other holding a knife pointed
in our direction.
I raised my hands immediately. “Rachel! It’s me! Long time no see!”
Recognition flashed across her face, and the knife lowered slightly.
When she spotted Selena behind me, her expression, transformed into one of shocked relief.
“Oh, thank the Moon Goddess!” Rachel exclaimed. “I’ve been so worried you hadn’t recovered from your injuries.”
“I’m fine,” Selena replied with a small smile.
Rachel’s shoulders relaxed visibly. “I’m glad.”
“No time to catch up,” I urged, glancing nervously toward the tent entrance. “Nathan’s distracted. We need to get you out of here–if you want to leave, that is.”

Rachel’s eyes narrowed with suspicion. Carter, how can Mateo and I trust you?”
“Mateo?” I asked, looking at the baby/in her arms. “That’s your son’s name?”
She nodded, her protective grip on the child tightening.
“Selena trusts me,” I said simply. “And I’m guessing from your expression that you’re not being kept here willingly.”

Rachel’s face told me everything I needed to know.
If you want to go, now’s the time… I pressed, hearing the battle intensify outside,
Selena stepped forward. “And we have people from our pack nearby. Once we get you safely away from this place, they’ll escort us back to the castle.”
Rachel looked conflicted, her gaze darting between the tent entrance and the small living space she’d clearly made her temporary home.
“Honey,” Selena said gently, “Nathan is homeless now. That makes him even more dangerous. Think about your baby’s safety. You know the castle would be safer for him. Let us take him back.”
Rachel’s expression softened as she looked down at her son. “You’re right. Actually, I was planning to leave while they were gone anyway. It’s just…” She hesitated. “I made a silly promise. I would have preferred to say goodbye properly.”
Selena placed a hand on Rachel’s shoulder. “He didn’t keep his promises to you, did he? Your baby comes first now.”
“You can wave to him as you run through the forest,” I joked, trying to lighten the mood. “That counts, right?”
A smile touched Rachel’s lips. “Alright. I’ll go with you now.”
She quickly gathered a bag of baby supplies, her movements efficient despite her obvious emotional turmoil.
“Can you
shift now?” Selena asked. “It would make traveling faster.”
Rachel nodded. “I turned twenty–one while I was here, so yes. But I’ve only shifted once. I’ve been stuck in this tent most of the time, so I’m not sure how well I can control it.”
I silently cursed Nathan for restricting her freedom.
At least she could shift now, which would make our escape easier.
I said, “We just need to move quickly.”
Selena peeked outside the tent. “All clear. Let’s go before the fighting moves this way.”
Rachel clutched her baby to her chest and followed Selena, with me bringing up the rear.
I suggested we head through the woods the same way we’d entered, but Selena chose a different path.
