Chapter 254
“We need to change direction,” Selena decided, leading us on a new path.
But soon we heard more wolves in that direction too. We changed course again, heading back toward the way we’d come, trying to find a safe passage through the increasingly chaotic battlefield.
My arms were beginning to ache from carrying Mateo. Though he wasn’t heavy by normal standards, the constant strain of holding him while moving quickly through rough terrain was taking its toll.
“Let me carry him for a while,” Carter offered, noticing my struggle.
My first instinct was to refuse. The thought of my son leaving my protection, even for a moment, sent a spike of anxiety through me. But my muscles were screaming in protest, and we still had a long way to go.
“Are you sure?” I asked hesitantly.
“For sure,” Carter insisted. “You need to rest your arms.”
After his third request, I finally relented. “Yes, but just for a little while, to give my arms a break.”
I reluctantly passed Mateo to Carter, watching anxiously as he adjusted his hold on my son. Mateo immediately began to squirm and fuss, uncomfortable with the unfamiliar person holding him.
He’s going to cry. His cries will give away our position!
I reached out to take him back, but Carter turned slightly away, bouncing Mateo gently in an attempt to soothe him.
“I think I’m slowing us down,” I admitted, watching Carter struggle with my increasingly fussy son. “Should you two shift? I could ride on your back, Carter.”
“What about the baby?” he asked, still trying to quiet Mateo.
“I’ll hold him while on your back,” I suggested, increasingly desperate to have my son back in my arms.
Before Carter could respond, we heard another group of wolves approaching from ahead. We changed direction yet again, but it was becoming clear that we were surrounded by fighting on all sides.
“Alright,” Carter finally agreed, handing Mateo back to me.
Relief washed over me as I reclaimed my son, holding him close and whispering soothing words until he settled.
Carter and Selena quickly stripped off their clothes and shifted, their human forms dissolving into powerful wolf shapes in
a matter of seconds.
I prepared to climb onto Carter’s broad back, still holding Mateo tightly. I had considered shifting myself, but I wasn’t
confident enough in my wolf form yet.
I’d only changed once before, and trying to navigate unfamiliar forest terrain in an unfamilia. Dody seemed more likely to slow us down than help.
Just as I was about to mount Carter’s back, a low, menacing growl came from the bushes behind us.

I froze, a paralyzing fear shooting through me. I knew without turning what I would see, but I forced myself to tenta
look anyway.
Carter’s wolf eyes widened with irritation and panic, and he jerked his head, urging me to hurry and climb onto his back
In that moment, I realized what I had to do. If I went with them, my child would have almost no chance of escaping the angry male behind us.
I had to stay and face him.
With quick, decisive movements, I wrapped Mateo securely in his blanket and tied a knot in the fabric. I shoved the knotted end into Carter’s wolf mouth.
“Run!” I commanded, my voice surprisingly steady.
Carter hesitated, clearly torn between his mission to rescue me and the new responsibility I’d just thrust upon him.
Another growl, louder this time, made the decision for him. With one last meaningful look, Carter turned and bounded into the forest with Selena, my precious son secured in his jaws.
I took a deep breath and turned around to face the man behind me.
