Urban sat on a chair across from the pharmacy window downstairs, his head down as he appeared to be texting on his phone.
For some reason, Maxine instinctively wanted to leave.
But as if sensing some inexplicable connection, Urban suddenly looked up and fixed his gaze directly on her.
Urban looked surprised as he stood up and walked over to her. “Hey, what brings you here? Are you feeling unwell too?”
As he spoke, his eyes drifted to the prescription slip in her hand.
Of course, they weren’t close enough for him to see what was written on the prescription slip, but Maxine instinctively tucked it behind her back. “Yeah, just… some things,” she replied.
Seeing that she didn’t want to say more, Urban pretty much figured it out. He chuckled softly and said, “It’s all right. I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather myself these past few days, so I thought I’d drop by while things are quiet at work.”
Urban waved the prescription slip in his hand. Just then, his number was called at the window, so he stood up, collected his medicine, and took his
leave.
After Maxine collected the medicine and handed it to the nurse on duty, she returned to the ward. Sebastian was still lying in bed, looking much better after taking the fever reducer yesterday.
Maxine tiptoed over to him and reached out to gently adjust his blanket.
The next instant, Sebastian suddenly grabbed her wrist. His eyes fluttered open, his voice still hoarse from the cold. “I knew you’d still worry about me,” he teased.
Sebastian had been faking sleep the whole time, just to see if Maxine would come back. ‘Looks like my little gamble paid off, he thought with a hint of
satisfaction.
Maxine withdrew his hand with a hint of helplessness. “You’ve got it all wrong,” she said, “When I brought you your medicine earlier, the nurse handed me a thermometer and asked me to check your temperature for her.”
Only then did Sebastian notice the thermometer clutched in Maxine’s other hand.
But he didn’t miss a beat, reaching out to take the thermometer. “Got it. Thanks,” he said.
Maxine sat beside him. “Now that you seem fine, I’ll be going,” she said.
With some difficulty, Sebastian tucked the thermometer under his arm. Seeing she was about to leave, he quickly called out, “Wait! My butler’s tied up these days, and I still need my IV. Could you… look after me for a bit?”
Noticing her hesitation, he quickly added, “It’s really nothing major, just hoping you could help me grab some food.”
Sebastian ran the entire Noxen Group, yet claimed he didn’t have a single person to fetch him a meal. Maxine looked down at him skeptically. ‘Yeah, right,’ she thought. She wasn’t buying it for a second
Their gazes locked for a long moment before Maxine finally sighed in resignation. “Fine,” she conceded, “but I’m only responsible for bringing you meals. The rest of the time, I’ve got my own work to attend to.”
The unspoken message was clear,
Sebastian didn’t mind at all and quickly nodded in agreement. He thought confidently, ‘As long as I can get her to come back, sooner or later. I’ll find a way to keep her by my side.”
Maxine thought for a moment, then added another condition. “After school, Brian must return to the mansion.
