Chapter 268
Nathan’s POV
I paced back and forth in Rachel’s tent, running a hand through my hair.
Rachel’s request echoed in my mind–to visit her mother’s grave and retrieve our son Mateo. My chest tightened at the thought of letting her anywhere near her people.
What if they take her? What if she never returns?
“Fuck, I muttered, kicking at the ground.
But she had asked with such genuine longing in those green eyes. She wanted to see her mother’s grave. She wanted our son back.
Could I really deny her that?
Despite everything, a part of me wanted to trust her this once.
If I let her go and she chose to stay with her people… if I lost them both forever…
The thought sent a wave of physical pain through me so intense I nearly doubled over.
I stopped pacing, my decision crystallizing despite the fear churning in my gut. I’d rather take the risk than see that sadness in her eyes every day.
Because I love her.
When I turned back toward Rachel, her eyes widened with hope, her slender fingers tentatively reaching for my arm before she seemed to catch herself and withdrew. The momentary contact sent warmth through my skin.
‘Fine,” I said, working to keep my voice neutral. “We can go to your mother’s grave. But we won’t stay long, and we’re not going anywhere near the castle.
“Really?!” The pure joy that lit up her face made my chest ache. “Thank you, Nathan! I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you’d take me there.”
Something in my rebel heart melted at her words, at the genuine gratitude in her voice.
I nodded stiffly, already wondering if I was making a terrible mistake “Be ready first thing tomorrow morning. I’ll have Gina relay to this Adam person exactly what I’m agreeing to.”
She agreed. I looked at her intently before turning and walking out of her tent.
I strolled leisurely back to my tent, sat down in the chair, and stared blankly at the ground.
‘Nathan! You agreed?!”
Gina burst into my tent without warning, her eyes wild with excitement. I narrowed my eyes at my sister’s reaction, irritated by her obvious delight.
“Thanks to you, I’m now reconsidering my decision,” I said.
Gina immediately clamped her hand over her mouth, shaking her head vigorously, though her eyes still danced with undisguised joy. I sighed.
Then I said, “Let’s head to the conference room. Call everyone together.”
Gina nodded and replied, “All right!”
In just a few minutes, they had shown up.
I stood at the center of the meeting area, surveying the faces around me–Tyler, Victoria, Apollo, Julian, and my other pack leaders,

Their expressions ranged from curiosity to concern as they awaited my announcement.
“Tomorrow morning, I will be escorting Rachel north to visit her mother’s grave,‘ I stated, my voice leaving no room for debate.
Victoria gasped audibly, but quickly composed herself under my sharp gaze.
‘Gina,” I continued, “I need you to inform your contact of my intentions. I don’t want to see more than ten of their warriors. And make damn sure they understand that any attempt to take Rachel will be considered an act of war. Is that clear?”
Gina nodded firmly. “Yes, Alpha.”
I turned to Julian. “While I’m gone, you’re in charge. I want you to make sure the rebels from the south don’t penetrate and take any of our territory. I don’t intend for our forces to try capturing more land during my absence either.”
“Got it, Alpha, Julian replied solemnly.
“Tyler, Victoria, Apollo, and Gina–you’ll be coming with me.” My gaze settled on Tyler. “Tyler, I need you to organize a squad of ten to escort us. Leave Julian with enough good men, but Rachel’s safety is paramount.”
Tyler replied, “Got it.”
That night, I prepared for our journey, checking supplies and finalizing arrangements. Sleep evaded me, my mind too full of doubts and possibilities.
When exhaustion finally claimed me, I was finally overcome by sleep.
I stood before a grave, Rachel at my side. ‘Come on, Nathan,” she said, extending her hand.
But when I reached for her, she stepped back. “I’m afraid this is where we part ways.”
“What? No–you promised- My voice broke.
“Sorry,” Rachel shrugged, her face suddenly cold and unfamiliar. “I never intended to return with you. Goodbye, Nathan.”
I lunged forward, trying to grab her arm, but my hand passed through her like smoke-
