Chapter 234
Barely managing to prop herself up against a tree, Maxine watched as Brian knelt on the ground, desperately sending a message. At last, she could hold on no longer and slipped into unconsciousness.
Night had already fallen, but fortunately, Sebastian had a large search party with him. With flashlights in hand, they followed the footprints onto the mountain trail, tracking the intermittent traces all the way down.
As time dragged on, Sebastian couldn’t help but feel a growing sense of despair. In this vast wilderness, if they went missing here, even a full–scale search could take days.
Just then, Sebastian’s phone buzzed. He quickly pulled it out, it was a message from Maxine’s number. [Dad, come help us quickly! We’re on the mountain trail halfway up Southview.]
It was Brian.
Sebastian let out a sigh of relief and immediately dialed the number. The signal was terrible here, but after what felt like an eternity of ringing, the call finally connected.
“Dad… we’re at Southview… Mom, she…” Brian’s choked voice crackled intermittently from the other end of the line.
Sebastian took a deep breath and said firmly, “Brian, don’t be scared. Turn on your flashlight, we’re almost there.”
‘I’ll find them as long as they’re on the mountain trail,’ he thought.
By now, the rescue team should already be making their way up the mountain. If all went well, it wouldn’t be long before they would be found.
The call dropped due to poor signal. Sebastian took a deep breath, forcing himself to stay composed.
Thankfully, after about ten minutes, he finally caught sight of a faint, flickering light up ahead.
“Over here!” Sebastian shouted.
With those words, he sprinted toward the faint light. Under a tree, Brian was clutching the unconscious Maxine tightly in his arms, while holding up his phone with its flashlight on high.
Seeing Sebastian, Brian could no longer hold back his tears and cried out, “Dad! Quick, look at Mom, she’s passed out!”
After all, Brian was just a teenager. Seeing his father, the pillar of strength he’d been desperately clinging to, all his pent–up emotions finally came pouring out.
Sebastian stepped forward and touched Maxine’s cheek, it was burning hot.
Brian clung desperately to Maxine’s clothes, sobbing, “Mom accidentally twisted her ankle when we were leaving. She can’t walk anymore… It’s all my fault…”
Sebastian bent down and scooped Maxine up from the ground. “We need to get down the mountain now, her sprained ankle’s infected and she’s burning up with fever. We must get her to the hospital immediately.”
The others nodded quickly as another police officer hoisted the exhausted Brian onto his back and started down the mountain.
In fact, they were already close to where Maxine had parked her car. But given her current condition, feverish and weak, even if she made it to the car, there was no way she could drive down the mountain.
He placed Maxine in the back seat, his chest tightening at the sight of her feverish, flushed cheeks. A surge of anger and helplessness washed over him, He thought bitterly, ‘She knew her limits, yet still took such risks, Does she even realize she could’ve died out there in the cold?‘
After helping Brian into the car, a police officer turned to Sebastian and said, “We’ll continue the investigation up the mountain. When Ms. Hudson wakes

up, we’ll need to take her statement again, we’d appreciate your cooperation then.”
“Will do,” Sebastian nodded as he climbed into the driver’s seat.
The car sped down the mountain, Sebastian rushed the two to the local hospital, only to be told they needed to be transferred to a bigger facility.
After administering basic first aid, the doctor quickly arranged for their emergency
ransfer to a city hospital.
Brian had never witnessed such a chaotic scene before. Tearfully clinging to Sebastian, he sobbed, “Dad… is Mom going to be okay?”
