Chapter 240
Maxine went into the inner room to fetch her wheelchair while Sebastian carried the luggage in. “I’ve checked the place, it looks decent. By tomorrow at the latest, I’ll have bodyguards stationed nearby,” he said.
Maxine looked at him. “Sebastian,” she said, “you really don’t have to go to such lengths for me.”
Back when she had the car accident, Urban had already signed her death certificate. Their marriage had ended long before that, there was nothing left between them.
Maxine let out a deep sigh. “So don’t waste your time on me. After the lawsuit is settled, I’ll be leaving the country. Over the past few years, I’ve established my own business overseas and met many wonderful people, and besides, I have Jessica with me.”
Sebastian’s eyes turned bloodshot. Unable to bear it, he closed his eyes. “Stop,” he said through clenched teeth.
Brian stood beside Maxine, at a loss. Even as a child, he hadn’t known how to comfort his parents in moments like this, now, he was even more clueless.
Maxine looked at Brian gently. “Why don’t you go back with your father
now, okay?”
Brian suddenly sprang to his feet, his voice trembling with emotion. “No! Mom, please don’t send me away!”
Maxine sighed helplessly, “I’m not trying to send you away, Brian. But you have school to attend back home, you can’t stay here with me all the time.”
As she spoke, Maxine glanced at Sebastian. He pursed his lips, his expression darkening. “I get it,” he replied quietly.
“Let’s go, Brian,” Sebastian said, “You have school soon.”
Learning that Maxine was being discharged today, Brian specifically begged Sebastian for a day off from school.
Brian gazed at Maxine with reluctant longing and whispered, his voice tinged with pleading, “Mom, please don’t send me away. I want to stay with you.”
Cleo wheeled herself out of the room and, sensing the tense atmosphere in the living room, looked a bit bewildered. She joked, “What’s going on here? Are you three auditioning for a soap opera or something?”
Cleo’s voice snapped them out of their emotional daze.
Cleo looked puzzled and said, “What’s with all the drama? Are we putting on some tragic farewell scene? Sebastian, aren’t you being a bit dramatic? Maxine’s just staying at my place, and I take care of her all the time. You make it sound as if I’d mistreat her or something.”
Waving at Sebastian, Cleo said with a grin, “Come on, you two should get going. This little guy still has school in a bit, hurry up!”
The father and son left reluctantly, stealing glances back every few steps.
For a while, Maxine stayed home to recuperate, but the peace didn’t last. Soon, Cleo stood before her, looking apologetic as she announced she had to
go out of town for work.
Seeing the guilty look on Cleo’s face, Maxine couldn’t help but burst out laughing. “Alright, I get it. Don’t worry about me, just go. Besides, I can manage
to walk around on my own now.”
She was right. These days, Maxine had been getting around the villa just fine, as long as she was careful with her injured ankle.
Cleo rushed over and threw her arms around Maxine, hugging her tightly. “I’m so sorry! I promised I’d take care of you.”
Maxine affectionately ruffled Cleo’s hair. “Go on, my dear girl. Don’t worry about me.”
With a reassuring smile, Maxine picked up her phone and said, “Worst case, I can always order takeout. It’s really not as bad as you think.”
The somber mood vanished instantly as Cleo straightened up. “Oh, that’s a relief,” she said.
