Chapter 290
“Don’t… it’s okay,” I tried to comfort them.
“No, it’s not okay,” Victoria insisted, wiping her tears angrily. “If we had known earlier… we would have found a way to save you! There must be
a way!”
I managed a weak smile. “Victoria… really, it’s okay.”
Perhaps there was a way to save me, but the price would be too high, and I wouldn’t ask anyone to pay it. My fate was sealed.
But I didn’t regret my choice. I had saved many of those I cared for and loved.
Gina placed Mateo near my shoulder. I ached to stroke his hair, but couldn’t move my hand. Mateo babbled at me, his tiny face animated.
I gazed at my son’s little face, noting his gray eyes so like his father’s and the determined little chin that hinted at the man he would become.
“You’re my dream come true, my sweet boy,” I whispered to him. “I love you with all my heart. One day… you’ll be a mighty king. But even with all that power, remember that the people who need you most deserve your attention. Be a strong leader, but not proud. Be fair, but also kind.”
Mateo babbled back, his chubby hand reaching to touch my face. A tear escaped my eye.
“Mama…” Mateo’s voice was tiny but clear.
At that single word, something in my chest fluttered, like a spark of life passing between us. Tears flowed freely now. “I waited so long to meet you, and now you’re here, and you’re everything.”
I couldn’t imagine life without him, and it broke my heart to think he would grow up without me.
But at least he wouldn’t have Madison as a stepmother.
At least he would be with people who loved and cared for him.
“Aunt Gina and Aunt Victoria will take care of you, my precious baby.” I looked at my friends, who nodded through their tears. “I hope Nathan will be part of your life too. Mateo needs his father.”
“You’re my heart,” I told Mateo, kissing his little hand as he placed it against my lips. “I love you so much.”
Mateo began to fidget, and I didn’t have the strength to hold him. Gina lifted him up, bringing him close to me again.
“And Nathan?” Gina asked softly. “Do you have a message for him?”
Nathan… My heart tumbled with complicated emotions–the fear I’d once felt, the understanding that came later, and now the sorrow of parting.
So many words between us had gone unspoken, so many chances missed.
“No,” I whispered, my voice barely audible ever to myself.
The pain had subsided now, replaced by a strange, floating calm.
How ironic that clarity would come only at the end. I closed my eyes, finally admitting to myself what I had known all along–I loved him. I had never stopped loving Nathan.
The fear, the anger, the disappointment that had consumed me for so long–they were all born of leve

I’ve already told him everything I needed to say, I murmured, feeling the weight of unshed tears behind my eyelids.
Victoria leaned closer. “Are you sure, Rachel? This might be your last chance.”
Images flashed before me–Nathan’s gentle gray eyes crinkling at the corners when he smiled, the way his arms felt around me, sate and certain. How desperately I longed for that embrace now.
“Tell him… I swallowed hard. “Tell him if he’s ever unsure what to think… how to interpret my feelings for him… tell him to read the letter again.”
“The letter?” Gina asked softly.
I nodded, feeling a tear escape despite my resolve. “Yes. The letter explains everything.”
In those final moments, I found peace in knowing that somewhere, preserved in my handwriting, was the truth of my heart that I’d been too afraid to speak aloud.
