Chapter 292
Nathan’s POV
“I’m not certain how it works exactly,” Adam admitted. “The texts only mention that the true mate must discover the way himself
Selena, who had been silent until now, stepped forward. “Only a mate who has completed the full mating bond would be recognized by the Moon Goddess as a true mate.”
A full mating bond.
I looked at Rachel’s still form, the mother of my child, the woman who had somehow worked her way into the heart I thought had died years
ago.
I couldn’t let her die!
Her people needed her. Our son needed her.
“Rachel has always held a special place for you, Selena said softly. “She was happy that you were the father of her child.”
Victoria and Gina began crying again, the sound tearing at my already shredded nerves.
As long as there’s even the slimmest chance, no matter how remote, I’ll try.
“How much time does she have?” I asked Adam.
“A week at most,” he replied solemnly.
I rose to my feet, my mind already racing ahead to what needed to be done. As I left the room, I opened my mental link to Tyler.
“Tyler, get everyone back to the war room!”
“I’ll be back soon, Rachel. Wait for me.”
The war room was filled with anxious faces when I returned. Everyone could sense that something had changed. The air felt electric with tension as I strode to the map table.
“What’s the status on the front lines?” I demanded.
Tyler looked concerned, his forehead creased with worry. “Nathan, I’ve been thinking… there has to be a way out of this. It’s like it’s stuck in my head, but I can’t get it out.”
“The enemy forces have nearly surrounded us,” one of the commanders reported. “They’ll be at our doorstep by tomorrow evening at this rate.”
“There’s no way to slow them down,” another added grimly.
My mind raced, piecing together fragments of a plan. “Wait. That’s it!” I exclaimed, my fist slamming down on the table. “We neeu o slow them down.”
All eyes turned to me, confused but hopeful./
“We dig trenches,” I explained, my words coming faster as the plan crystallized. At the forest edge near the castle walls. We use the natural slope there to our advantage. Make them at least eight feet deep and five feet wide. When the enemy charges, they’ll fall right in.
The commanders exchanged glances, considering the idea.

Chapter 292
“We’ll fill the trenches with oil, tar, anything sticky and filthy we can find to prevent them from climbing out easily, I continued then we
burn them!”
“The trenches will need to be covered,” Tyler added, catching on quickly. “Otherwise, they’ll be visible from a distance.
I nodded. “We’ll use a net–like fabric to cover them, then disguise it with forest debris. Do we have the equipment for digging?”
“Yes, Alpha. We have excavation machinery in the city.”
“What about the materials for the covers?”
“The textile factory can provide the netting.”
“And the oil and tar?”
“The fuel processing plant to the west has reserves we can use.”
One by one, I assigned tasks to each commander, emphasizing the urgency of our situation.
This had to work…
If we fell, Rachel would be at the mercy of Madison or Kael, or worse, she might use the Moon Goddess’s power again to save us.
“But Alpha,” a female general interjected, “how can we be sure they’ll approach from that direction? What if they avoid our trap entirely?”
I met her gaze steadily. “They’ll come,” I assured her with cold certainty. “Because I’m going to make sure they do.”
When the meeting concluded, I held Tyler back as the others filed out to begin preparations.
“Oversee all of this,” I instructed him. “Make sure every detail is executed perfectly.”
“Nathan?” Gina’s voice came from behind me as I stepped into the hallway. “What’s going on? You’re putting Tyler in charge of this. Aren’t you going to fight with us?”
“Of course I am,” I lied, not meeting her eyes.
“Bullshit! Tell me the truth.”
I sighed, knowing my sister could see through me too easily. “I have personal business to attend to. You’ll have to trust me on this, Gina.”
Her expression softened slightly. “Is there anything I can do to help?”
“Yes. Look after Mateo while I’m gone.”
“Gone? Where are you-
“I need to find Carter. Is he in the castle?”
Gina nodded. “He never left. He’s in the east wing, in a room overlooking the forest edge.”
Without another word, I sprinted through the hallways, my heart pounding with a mixture of determination and desperation. Time was running out–for our forces, for Rachel, for everything.
I pounded on the door with all my strength, my knuckles turning white from the force. After what felt like an eternity, Carter finally swung it open.
Chapter 292
“Bro, stop trying to break my door down,” he groaned, “How am I supposed to get any decent sleep if you destroy the thing?”
I stood there frozen, suddenly unsure how to face my brother. Hesitation and urgency battled within me so much to say, yet the words
wouldn’t come.
Carter seemed to see right through me, his eyes narrowing slightly as he studied my face.
“Just spit it out,” he said with a sigh. “Whatever it is. We don’t need to talk about the past. Although I don’t like you.” He leaned against the doorframe. “I want to protect Nexus too, you know.”
I tasted bitterness on my tongue, but not the rage I’d expected to feel. Too much was at stake for old rivalries.
“Do you truly care about Rachel?” I asked bluntly.
Carter’s eyes narrowing. ‘Of course I do. But I don’t know what that has to do with you, Nathan.”
I took a deep breath, forcing the words past my pride. “I need your help.”
