Chapter 309
Rachel’s POV
After Jasper and Isla left, I stood there feeling emotionally drained. The prophet’s words echoed in my mind–1 needed to wait for someone who could help Nathan.
But waiting felt impossible when he lay so still, barely clinging to life.
Gina appeared beside me, her brow furrowed as she watched the door close behind Isla. “Hmm… what did the mean by that?” she asked, confusion evident in her voice.
I took a deep breath, trying to focus my scattered thoughts. Nathan needed me to be strong, to find a solution. And suddenly, I remembered someone else who needed help.
“Gina,” I said, my voice steadier than I expected, “let’s go see Carter. If he’s injured, you know I can help heal him.”
Gina nodded, seeming relieved to have a concrete task. We left Nathan’s bedside reluctantly.
We found Carter resting in a chamber not far from mine. He looked pale, with bandages covering various wounds, his breathing shallow but steady.
Gina immediately went to his side, her face etched with concern. She produced a glass of water, which I noticed had a pinkish tint.
“I mixed some of your blood with water,” Gina explained as she carefully lifted Carter’s head and helped him drink. “It should help speed up healing.”

We waited in silence, and within minutes, Carter’s color improved. His eyelids fluttered, then opened. He blinked several times, focusing first on Gina, then scanning the room.
“Gina,” he croaked, his voice rough with disuse, “go tell that bastard brother of ours he better be ready for the hell of a punch I’m going to give him for what he made me go through! Hmph.”
His eyes shifted, noticing me for the first time. “Oh, hi, Rachel… what’s wrong? You are still alive!”
I tried to speak, but emotion closed my throat. How could I tell him that Nathan, who he already had such a complicated relationship with, was lying near death after sacrificing himself for me?
Thankfully, Gina intervened, helping Carter sit up against the pillows.
“Carter…” she began gently, “Nathan is… he’s not well, After the battle, he performed a ritual to save Rachel. He transferred his life force to her, and now he’s in a coma. We don’t know if he’ll wake up.”
Carter’s expression changed, the cockiness draining away. “I never.. he started, then his voice caught.
Gina studied him. “You never thought he could be so selfless?”
Carter’s silence was confirmation enough.
‘I don’t understand, Carter said after a moment, looking between us. “Nathan always seemed so… cold. Calculating.”
Gina sighed, settling into a chair beside his bed. “I used to think the same thing when I was younger. But as I grew up, I realized he’s not the heartless monster everyone makes him out to be.”
“Not heartless?” Carter scoffed, though the effort seemed to pain him. “Gina, he killed our father, and thanks to him, our mother didn’t live much longer either!”

I watched Gina’s face harden, her jaw tightening. “You still call him father? She shook her head only Carter, you haber that monster was. Even though I was his flesh and blood, he was just as cruel to me?
She described incidents of violence and abuse, detailing how their father had beaten Nathan regularly and mitmest fade mother
The horror in her voice made my stomach turn as I realized how little Carter seemed
I to know about his own family history
“He wasn’t always that nice to me either…” Carter admitted reluctantly, “but I don’t think he did anything that warranted d
The monster you call father deserved death many times over for reasons beyond your understanding, Carter, Gina replied, her wicz finged with old pain.
Carter shook his head, confusion evident. “I don’t know. Dylan always talked about our father like he was a god in human form
“You’ve been brainwashed by Dylan for years, Gina said, her voice rising slightly. “You’re lucky you’re on our side now. Otherwise, 14 Yick you in the balls to remind you that Dylan is insane.”
“Do you have to be so crude?” Carter protested, but there was no real heat in his words.
Gina laughed, the sound lightening the heavy atmosphere in the room.
I stood silently listening to their exchange, my thoughts inevitably drifting back to Nathan.
The man they were discussing was the same one who now lay motionless in my bed, having given up his life force to save mine. It was hard to reconcile the different versions of him–the cold–hearted Alpha, the protective father, the man who claimed not to love me yet sacrificed everything.
“You know,” Gina said, interrupting my thoughts, “if you still hold a grudge against Nathan after what he did for all of us, you’re even more stupid than I thought.”
Carter was quiet for a long moment, staring at his hands. “Maybe I misjudged him…” he finally said, his voice softer than before.
“How so?” I asked, speaking for the first time since we’d entered.
Carter looked up at me, his eyes troubled. “When he first came up with that crazy plan to get himself captured and beaten up to draw out Madison and Kael’s army, I thought he was just an unfeeling, cold–hearted bastard.”

He shifted uncomfortably, wincing at the movement. “I remember thinkir selfish prick puts himself in that kind of danger just to prove he’s better a war than anyone else? What if he hadn’t succeeded? Then Mateo would be an orphan!”
He turned to me directly, his eyes sincere. “I thought he was just a cold–hearted bastard who liked ordering people around, and all he wanted was to be a stupid hero. But I was wrong.”
His words hit me hard. I had misjudged Nathan too, hadn’t I?
