Nathan’s POV
I felt my legs moving before my brain fully processed what was happening.
Madison was retreating rapidly into the forest, with reinforcements streaming through the trees behind her.
I recognized David Reynolds leading a pack of Goldshore wolves. Madison bounded toward him, her injured body somehow still managing to move with purpose.
“Rachel, come back!” I shouted as Rachel prepared to pursue Madison. My voice cracked with effort, the wounds across my chest throbbing. “We’re outnumbered! Madison got lucky this time, but they’ll be back! We’ll catch them next time!”
Rachel turned back toward me, her wolf form majestic even covered in battle grime. As she approached, her eyes softened with concern as they fixed on the deep gashes across my torso.
The look of worry in those eyes made something in my chest twist painfully–and it wasn’t from my
wounds.
Pathetic. You’re supposed to protect her, and instead, she had to save you.
What kind of Alpha was I if I couldn’t even protect the woman I loved? I had walked right into Madison’s trap, like a goddamn amateur. If Rachel hadn’t shown up when she did…
Rachel nudged my side gently with her right shoulder, indicating we should retreat.
I tried to shift, focusing my energy, but the pain spiked through me, and my powers refused to respond. Shit.
This was embarrassing.
“Don’t worry, Rachel…” I tried to keep my voice steady. “I’m… I’m just tired.”
You’re weak, and now she knows it.
Through our mind link, Gina’s voice cut in, “Nathan, get on a warrior’s back. You’re in no condition to walk, let alone fight.”
I wanted to argue, but Gina was already directing one of my warriors to lower himself beside me. Meanwhile, she climbed onto Rachel’s back with practiced ease.
“Fine,” I muttered, reluctantly climbing onto the warrior’s back.
As we retreated through the forest, I couldn’t help but watch Rachel moving ahead of us. Even in battle retreat, she wasgnificent–her copper fur catching the late afternoon sunlight, muscles rippling beneath as she navigated the terrain with natural grace.
A far cry from the terrified girl I’d first brought to my territory.
So stunning!
But now this–being rescued by her after stupidly falling into Madison’s trap. What must she think of me now? Arrogant, heartless, stupid, and weak…
When we reached the tent entrance, a crowd immediately surrounded Rachel. Warriors, healers, and scouts all clamored for her attention, reporting injuries, enemy movements, and resource needs.
I slid off the warrior’s back, muttering thanks as I stood on unsteady legs.

Yet as the crowd pulled her away, Rachel turned back, her eyes finding mine across the distance. The question in them was clear. “Are you
okay?”
I forced a reassuring smile and nodded. ‘I’ll be fine, don’t worry,” I called. “Go do what you need to do.”
She hesitated for a moment, glancing between me and the waiting crowd, before turning toward her room.
The brief look of conflict on her face ga
me a foolish spark of hope that I quickly extinguished. She had more important concerns than me.
me and dragged me off to the infirmary.
Later, as I was making my way back to my room, Gina intercepted
“I’m fine!” I insisted as two healers fussed over
e in the medical tent, cleaning my wounds despite my protests.
“Let them check you properly!” Gina commanded, standing at the foot of the cot with her arms crossed. She’d followed me here after ensuring Rachel was settled.
Once the healers finished applying salve to my wounds and bandaging my chest, they quietly left the tent, leaving me alone with my sister.
The moment they were gone, Gina’s expression darkened.
“What the fuck were you thinking, Nathan?” she demanded, her voice low but furious. “Chasing after that fake Rachel like that? I can’t believe you were so stupid! Did you really think Rachel would let herself get captured by that bitch Madison? And didn’t it occur to you that if the girl in that cage had been Rachel, you would have felt it through the mate bond?”
