Gina’s eyes widened. ‘Have you seen Madison on the battlefield today?”
“No.”
“Can you reach Nathan through the mind link?”
Gina’s face paled as she attempted to contact her brother. “He’s not responding.”
“We need to get back to camp–now!” I said, already moving. Panic clawed at my throat as we ran through the trees.
“Don’t worry, Rachel,” Gina tried to reassure me. “My brother’s not stupid enough to fall for Madison’s tricks. He’ll know it isn’t you.”
I couldn’t share her optimism, especially with Nathan not responding to our mind links.
“Commander Adam, you and General Caspian need to finish this battle. I have an emergency!” I projected urgently through mind link.
To Gina, I said, “Tell Tyler where we’re going. I’ll shift–my sense of smell will be better.” I quickly stripped off my clothes and shifted into wolf form.
Gina gathered my discarded clothing and climbed onto my back. “Let’s go.”
We followed Nathan’s scent deep into the forest. The command tent was empty, but his trail led farther in. The smell of blood and unfamiliar wolves grew stronger as we approached.
Through the trees, we finally spotted them. Nathan was in human form, wearing only shorts, his wrists bound with iron chains. Several of his wolves lay injured nearby, surrounded by a small group of King Dylan’s soldiers.
Madison stood there in human form, and beside her–my breath caught–a white–haired woman who looked eerily like me stood next to an
open cage.
“We need reinforcements,” I sent through the mind link to the camp.
“Nathan, you really would risk everything for your precious breeding tool Rachel, wouldn’t you?” Madison taunted. “What has she done to you? Fucked you so good you lost your fucking mind?”
Nathan’s face remained cold. “If your filthy mouth says her name one more time, you’ll regret it,” he replied.
Madison spat at his feet. “You’re chained up, you bastard! What are you going to do, huh?” But she didn’t say my name again.
She leapt into the air, shifting mid–jump. Nathan’s powers had been unstable since he’d awakened, and he seemed unable to shift.
Madison clearly realized this too as her claws raked/across his bare chest, drawing blood.
As she pinned him to the ground, her wolf jaws, poised to bite into his shoulder, Nathan landed a punch to her wolf face.
The blow connected, but Madison’s fangs and claws still tore into him.
Rage and heartbreak surged through me. How dare she hurt him like that!
Gina and I exchanged a quick glance before moving forward. She drove her knife into the back of a large male wolf while I darted between them.
The wolf’s howl alerted Madison, who turned from Nathan momentarily.
Chapter 328
“Rachel, don’t! It’s a trap!” Nathan shouted, struggling to his feet and running toward me.
Madison leapt at Nathan’s exposed side, but I was faster. Fueled by rage, I slammed into her with all my strength, sending her flying through the air.
The sound of bones breaking echoed through the clearing as she crashed into a tree.
Nathan stared at me for a second, then whispered, “I forgot how strong you are…”
I turned briefly toward him before pursuing Madison, who had shifted back to human form.
She lay naked on the ground, blood streaming from her head, her body covered in bruises.
Looking at her defenseless, I realized I couldn’t bring myself to kill her.
“You fucking bitch!” Madison sobbed, her composure completely shattered. “This is all your fault! I was supposed to be the next Moon Goddess Queen, but you ruined everything! I finally found my mate and you almost killed him… Why is it always you?! You stupid, filthy, fucking bitch
The fighting around us had died down, and the wolves were all listening.
Nathan limped to my side, glaring at Madison. “Shut your mouth or you’ll die,” he commanded.
Madison laughed hysterically. “You bastard! You’ll pay for this!” She struggled to her feet, pointing a shaking finger at Nathan. “Someday, you’ll regret everything, and you’ll pay for it!”
She shifted back to wolf form and ran into the trees.
I started after her, but Nathan called out, “No! Wait, Rachel!”
A moment later, howls echoed through the forest. Between the trees, row after row of wolves appeared, their eyes gleaming with bloodlust.
