Chapter 101

Lydia

I never expected Zoe to tell Mason. A part of me suddenly wished there was another way to get a kidney, but there wasn’t

After the surgery, Zoe tried to speak to me, but I refused to see her. I had trusted her, and she went right back to betray me

Again

She sent a text, and as I walked out of Melanie’s room, I tapped on her message to reveal its content

Please let’s meet. I know you are angry, I told Mason, and I won’t try to convince you by telling you that he has the right to know. I had exceeded the line. It wasn’t my position to tell, but I want to set things straight.”

A loud ding and another message appeared, continuing the last one, I thought long and hard, and the first thing I needed to do was to correct all lies, so I told him about the twins. I will be telling him the truth about who killed my stepdad.”

Another dinged, I know what I will do may not correct the ruin. But I want you to understand that I’m truly willing to set things right, and the twins dèserve their dad’s presence in their lives. I’d be waiting for your reply. If possible, let’s meet

and talk.”

I twisted my lips to the side as I reread her last message, The twins deserve their dad’s presence in their lives

I stood rooted to the ground, then closed my eyes and opened them. I understand that. But what she didn’t know was that their dad’s presence in their life may lead to danger, and that was what I was trying to avoid

My line of thought was cut short when I felt Liam’s hand wrapped around my legs

I looked down to find Liam staring at me with doe eyes

Hey, big boy.”

Mom, I got you.He giggled loudly. I turned off the screen of my phone and leaned down to carry him, placing his head on my shoulders

You almost gave me a heartache,I said, stroking his back as I moved forward. I left him in Melanie’s room

I’m sorry about that, Mom.I walked to the dining area and pulled out a chair. I placed him in the chair

Melanie was discharged yesterday. Liam was the happiest. He spends a long time in Melanie’s room. Melanie still needed time to rest and recover, but that didn’t stop him from chatting with her, or more correctly, chatting to himself

Grandma, you made pancakes for breakfast?Liam squealed. He liked pancakes, but Mom would always tell him he could only have them on special occasions

I guess today is special. He said, adjusting his chair

Of course, son.Guess who’d be eating chocolate today? She placed two bars of chocolate next to Liam’s plate, making his smile widen

Chapter 101

Yey!!!”

We had breakfast together, chatting and laughing. This was our little way of welcoming Melanie home. But it wasn’t complete yet since Melanie wasn’t with us

I got a call at noon from Mia informing me about an emergency meeting. I had to break my plan of no official work until Melanie is in her best health

The meeting lasted for over three hours. I stepped out of the meeting, massaging my shoulders with Mia walking right beside me

How’s Melanie? I haven’t been able to come over since last week.Mia had been doing all the work I was supposed to

I’m sorry, it must be overwhelming,I said

Our shoes clicked loudly on the floor. People bristled in the hallway with ID hanging over their necks, and they bowed in respect as I walked past

Marcus is away for a business trip and will be back next week. That jerk just has to be away now. Can’t we have the party without him?Mia whined

She got help from Marcus, and a type of friendship quickly blossomed between the two

He can join via video call.I laughed as she spoke, going on and on about the various ways we can have the party without him, but somehow include him

She opened the door, and I stepped in. Since I was already here, I decided to quickly get a few paperwork done. Mom was home with Melanie and Liam, and I thought it would be best to help relieve some of the work for Mia

Immediately, I stepped in, and my foot got rooted to the ground. Mia closed the door and paused too

What are you doing here?I asked and started walking towards my table. I sat behind my table and looked at Mia, who raised her hand

I had no idea that he was here.”

I do not use an opendoor policy, so how the hell did he find his way into my office

Lydia, I know you do not want me here.”

Should I call the security?”

We need to talk, Lydia, please.”

Mia, what are you waiting for?I asked, raising my voice more than I planned to. I had no idea he was here. How did he know to come here? I have been avoiding him all along

I’m not ready to speak to him. Please, let’s talk, I did not come with any intention. He said

Mia was already on the phone. Mia. Don’t worry.Maybe I should allow him to speak. It was the best time to clear whatever misconceptions he might be conceiving in his mind

Chapter 101

I will never allow him to have access to my children. They are mine, and if he wanted the sperm he contributed, then kil have someone pay him back

The door opened and closed. Mia stepped out, leaving both me and Mason alone in the office

I needed to stay calm. First I’ll listen to him and then I’ll make sure he understands that there is no need to pretend to care about the twins now. It was too late

What do you want?I asked, pointing, swivelling side to side with my chair

Why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant the day I visited you and that it was mine?I scoffed as I watched him act pathetically. I had no idea about the pregnancy until the fire happened. I’m not going to lie, I thought it wasn’t mine. If I had known before, then I’d have-I stopped spinning my chair around.

You’d have what?I cut him short, not wanting to hear any stupid excuse from him. What? You had no idea I was pregnant and that the child was yours?I raised a brow and let out a hysterical laugh

That’s bullshit.Mason stared at me as though he couldn’t recognise me. He didn’t know this side of me. This side is filled with pure hatred, anger, and all the other bitter emotions that I have bottled up within for years

I tried to tell you.” I stood, tears sliding down the side of my face as the memory that will haunt me forever came rushing

back into my mind

I’m pleased with you, Mason. I tried to reason with you, but you.A sob cut through my throat, But you refused to listen

to me.”

It was a cut that would bleed forever. The part of me that will never heal. Even if everyone doubted me, it shouldn’t have been Mason. I loved you. I trusted you, but you?I began laughing and took one more step towards him

You tossed me aside like I was nothing,”

Don’t you dare say that, Lydia. You betrayed me first, I loved you and you just-”

Tell a better lie, Mason. You cheated on me and abandoned me, hoping I’d rot in prison for the rest of my life. Who would do that to the same person they claimed to love? Huh?”

I clenched

my

fist at my side

It was clear you had an affair with my stepdad. How was I supposed to endure that?”

You still believe that?It was as though I was stabbed in the same place over again. Even after five years, you ill think I slept with Jared, your stepdad? What was expecting

No, I expected nothing from him, so why does it still hurt like this? I support myself by placing my hand on the closest chair. He tried to reach for me, but I slapped his hand away and raised my head, telling him to stay back

Even if everyone doubted me, not you.I stood still. It was no use revisiting old wounds. It won’t change a thing and would only hurt more

I’m sorry, I didn’t believe you. I had no idea if I did, I would have been there for my kids.”

Aug

It’s fine. You don’t have to apologise. We don’t need you in our lives. He knows they are twins

It was time to tell him what I wanted to do

We’ve been doing fine without you in our lives. They don’t need you now.”

They are my kids too, Lydia, I have a right to them as you do,”

No, you don’t.Not after trying to kill them

Worst Fear Synopsis : Worst Fear

Lydia’s world was already a crumbling ruin long before she collapsed on the cold, bleach-slick tiles of Westgate Prison. She had been serving her sentence with quiet endurance, forcing herself to survive each monotonous day. Cleaning floors, enduring the harsh routine, and trying to numb her thoughts had become her way of life. But as she gripped the mop handle, her body betrayed her — dizziness washed over her, and before she could steady herself, the world went black.

When she regained consciousness, Lydia found herself lying on a thin mattress in the prison hospital. The sterile smell of disinfectant filled her lungs, and her head ached violently. A familiar figure stood by her bedside — Nurse Gloria, a kind-hearted woman often whispered about by the inmates for her compassion. Lydia had never personally interacted with her before; she preferred keeping her distance from everyone. But this time, she had no choice.

Gloria spoke softly, her voice calm and motherly. “You fainted during your shift,” she explained. Lydia, groggy and disoriented, nodded faintly. Fainting wasn’t unusual for prisoners — malnutrition, exhaustion, and stress were daily realities in Westgate. But Gloria’s next words didn’t fit the routine explanation. She leaned in, her tone serious and almost secretive. “I ran some tests to see why you collapsed.”

Lydia’s brows furrowed. Tests? The nurse’s expression made her heart race. Something was wrong. And then Gloria said it — words that hit Lydia like a lightning strike.

“You’re three months pregnant.”

For a moment, Lydia’s world went silent. The walls, the lights, the nurse — everything faded into a blur of disbelief. Pregnant? That couldn’t be right. Her throat went dry as she tried to process the impossible. Three months. Her hands instinctively flew to her stomach, pressing against the rough fabric of her prison uniform. There was nothing — no bump, no sign of life — yet Gloria’s certainty left no room for denial.

Lydia’s first reaction was refusal. “No,” she whispered. Her voice trembled. “That can’t be right.” But Gloria simply nodded, her expression heavy with empathy. “It’s right, Lydia. I double-checked the results myself.”

The truth settled like a stone in Lydia’s gut. The symptoms she’d ignored — the morning dizziness, the fevers, the missed periods — suddenly made sense. Deep down, she knew this was no mistake. Panic clawed at her chest as she realized what this meant. Her past — the one she’d buried so carefully since the day she was arrested — came rushing back. The man she had loved, the night she had tried to forget, the betrayal that had shattered her life.

Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall in front of Gloria. She couldn’t afford weakness here. Her voice was barely a whisper when she pleaded, “Please… you can’t tell anyone. No one can know about this.”

Gloria studied her for a long moment. Lydia could see the internal conflict behind the nurse’s eyes — between her duty to report and her compassion for the broken woman before her. Finally, Gloria sighed softly and nodded. “I won’t say a word,” she promised. Relief washed over Lydia like a wave, but it was fleeting. Gloria wasn’t finished. “But you have to promise me something too. You’ll come back for regular checkups. No skipping, no excuses. You and the baby need to be monitored. Do you understand?”

Lydia nodded mutely, emotion choking her voice. She didn’t trust herself to speak. The nurse gave her hand a gentle squeeze before stepping away to inform the guards that Lydia needed rest.

The walk back to her cell felt endless. Two guards flanked her on either side, but she barely noticed them. Her mind was spinning, replaying Gloria’s words over and over — three months pregnant. Each repetition felt like a hammer blow. She stumbled into her cell, collapsing onto the thin, creaky cot. The metal door slammed shut behind her, sealing her inside with the suffocating truth.

She stared at the ceiling for a long time before curling up on her side. Her trembling hands hovered over her stomach, fear twisting in her chest. She could barely keep herself alive in this place — how could she protect an unborn child? Westgate wasn’t meant for fragile things. It was a graveyard of hope, a place that crushed even the strongest spirits. What kind of life could she possibly give her baby behind these bars?

The tears she had fought earlier now spilled freely, sliding down her cheeks as silent sobs wracked her body. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, as if she could shield the tiny life inside her from the cruelty of the world beyond her cell walls.

For the first time in years, Lydia prayed. Not for freedom, not for revenge — just for strength. For the chance to protect this unexpected child growing inside her.

As she turned her hand, the faint glint of her wedding band caught her eye. The ring mocked her, its shine a cruel reminder of the life she had lost. Three months ago, everything had been perfect — or so she thought. Her marriage had felt like a fairy tale. Even though her in-laws despised her, she had still believed love could conquer everything. Her husband had been her safe haven, her anchor.

Until the night everything fell apart.

The memory was sharp and unforgiving — flashing lights, police sirens, his face twisted in disgust as she was dragged away in handcuffs. The betrayal in his eyes had hurt worse than the accusation itself. That image haunted her still, burned into her mind like a scar that would never fade.

Now, lying in that cold, dim cell, Lydia finally understood how deep her despair ran. The baby inside her was both a curse and a fragile glimmer of hope. A connection to the man she once loved — and the life she could never return to.

As exhaustion finally claimed her, her last thoughts were of him — the man she’d once trusted more than anyone. His expression, full of hatred and disbelief, was the last thing she saw before the darkness took her again.

And for the first time, Lydia realized she wasn’t just a prisoner anymore. She was a mother — trapped in a place where love and life were luxuries no one could afford. But no matter what, she silently vowed: she would find a way to protect her baby, even if it meant fighting the entire world from behind these bars.
