Chapter 122

Mason

There are some emotions I never tried to explore, not until Lydia came into my followed

I never thought I’d be able to feel so many emotions at the same time until now

life

The first was love; it was strange, and other emotions

After Zoe finished speaking, I could barely stand. When I tried to, my legs wobbled like jelly, and I ended up back on the couch. I can’t accept this. There must be a mistake somewhere

I tried to make so many excuses for Mom. It finally made sense why Zoe left, why she has been giving Mom the cold shoulder since she returned. Why did she return only after Lydia did

You are in no position to drive,Marcus said. I looked to the side, and I didn’t notice he was there at first. We were in the underground parking lot at his house

When did I even get here

Zoe is standing close to him, her eyes red from all the tears she has been shedding. Marcus took the key from my hand, I’ll drive you.He offered. I was too tired to argue with him

I don’t know what you and Zoe discussed

you two look like a mess.He said

All through the ride home, my mind drifted through different thoughts. That day, Lydia had not denied any of the allegations my mom made. But she had also not accepted them

Why didn’t she deny it? If she had at least said something, then all this would not have happened. I shook my head, dispelling that thought. This is the worst time to blame anyone

For now, I’d confront Mom to hear what she has to say, maybe Zoe was mistaken and had remembered it wrongly

Immediately, Marcus killed the engine, I opened the door and stepped out, walking as fast as my legs could carry me

I tugged on my tie and pulled it off, holding it with one hand as I marched forward. Mom wasn’t in the sitting room, so I walked up the stairs, taking them two at a time. Stopping in front of her door, I pushed it open only to realise that it was empty

passed my hand through my hair and released a frustrated groan. Where the fuck is she

Now standing in the sitting room, I felt my sanity slipping away with each second that rolled by. That moment, the door pushed open, Mom walked in with an unfamiliar woman pulling shopping bags behind her

and

I jerked my head to the side, where a wall clock perched. It was past 12 am, where she could be returning from. She laughed at a joke the woman said, and then moved her eyes to me

Mason, I didn’t know you were here? Did you just come? She questioned. I clenched

I my fist by my side

She wasn’t home all day, which explains why I never got any calls from her informing me that Zoe was missing; it seems she had no idea

about it either

Have you eaten?Really? By this time of the night? I can make you something quickly before we talk? I don’t want us to start talking on an empty stomach. She added. She probably wanted to talk about my breakup again

I need to speak to you, too.One look at the lady with the shopping bag who was

lingering by, and she scurried off

Chapter 122

Okay, we’ll talk, let’s get ”

I’ll go first,I said, cutting her off. I’m too angry to even think at this point, I just want to get this over with, seeing the seriousness in my eyes she took a seat on the couch, Take a seat then.”

I didn’t take a seat; this isn’t something that I had to sit before I spoke. Is there something you are keeping away from me?I began, Something you think I should know?”

She shook her head, confused, What are you on about, Mason? She asked

“You know!I yelled. Stop pretending, I wanted to add, Five years ago, your husband’s death, my divorce.I gave her all the hints I could think of. If she came clean and cried and begged me for forgiveness, no, not me, Lydia, maybe I’d let this go

She shook her head, still playing stupid, If you have something to say to me, go straight to the point. You look angry already, you’re stalling time, and it will only make this worse.”

And she was right, so I laid it out, Why did you lie to me? Why did you lie against Lydia and make me end my marriage?”

I’ve never lied to you.She said, still as calm as

There you go again. I know the truth, Lydia didn’t kill Jared. Zoe did, how long were you going to lie to me for? Hereyes widened briefly, and she shifted uncomfortably in her seat before moving her gaze to me

What do you mean? ILydia, she sucked in a breath, avoiding my gaze, lydia killed my husband. She stuttered

There’s no need to deny it,I said. That moment, the lady from earlier returned, without looking in my direction, she walked straight to Mom and whispered into her ear

Panicked flashes crossed Mom’s face

She finally realizes. Did you meet with Zoe?Fear filled Mom’s eyes as she asked

Is that important? Just answer my question.” I yelled, flinging my tie and the phone I held to the side

No, that’s not true, whatever she told you, don’t believe her. It’s all lies. She said, moving towards me. She didn’t kill Jared; Lydia did. I’m sure Lydia put her up to this. To plant the seed of hate amongst us, she must be mad to know that she is no longer a part of our family; this is her trying to take revenge.”

Don’t you walk towards me!I yelled and she stopped

Mom, just come clean.I heard a voice behind me. Zoe. Where has she been? Zoe, how did you leave? You were supposed to stay in your

room.”

You can’t keep me locked up forever. She said, glaring at Mom. It’s better you come clean to him now.”

Silence

And then a scream, a loud, deafening scream, escaped Mom’s throat. She grabbed her hair and pulled it

When she stopped and looked at me, I felt as though I was staring at a different person; the facade was finally off

Yes,” she said, raising her head and gritting her teeth, Zoe killed Jared, and so? Lydia already took the blame, and she is out of your life. She said. She was not feeling a bit remorseful

My heart broke into a million tiny pieces at her admission. Why? Why did you do that? How could you ruin my marriage? For what?I just couldn’t understand. I never thought her hatred for Lydia ran that deep. That’s what she would do, what she could to ensure Lydia left me

even if it means throwing her in prison for a crime she didn’t commit

Don’t you push the blame on me, Mason. It was you who didn’t trust your wife. You believed me, I never forced you.I am stunned at her words, It was you who called the police on her yourself.”

She was right. I can’t blame her alone

I had a part to play in all this. If only I trusted my wife even half, then all this wouldn’t have happened. But Mom was the cause

Mom was always trying to control my life

After Lydia, she brought Julia, and went as far as plotting with her to deceive me with her fake pregnancy. It was finally clear what type of

woman Mom was

That isn’t all. There’s something mom isn’t telling you.Zoe said. She crossed her hand over her chest and looked at Mom, Do you want to tell him or should I?”

What more could there be? I am convinced that she couldn’t have done more

Mom grinds her teeth, I have nothing more to say, Zoe.She said, Liar.Zoe called her out immediately, You still have a lot to say.She tilted her head to the side and stepped forward

You knew I heard you the other day, that’s the main reason you had me locked up. I found out your greatest secret. She pushed out her chest, and I saw Mom squirm under Zoe’s harsh gaze

Fine.Zoe said and returned to my side, since she doesn’t want to tell you, I’ll do it, Zoe.Mom called sharply

But it was too late, Zoe spoke, She tried to kill Lydia and the twins. That fire that almost took Lydia’s life in prison, she turned to mom, it was her, she orchestrated it to get rid of Lydia and her pregnancy for good.”

My breath heightened, She knew she was pregnant and still tried to kill her. That’s how vile she is, but luckily, Lydia survived, and just like Mom wanted, she thinks you caused it. That’s why she hates you so much.”

My legs suddenly felt too weak to carry my body. Mom wasn’t denying it, it was true

Mom ruined me, she ruined everything

Worst Fear Synopsis : Worst Fear

Lydia’s world was already a crumbling ruin long before she collapsed on the cold, bleach-slick tiles of Westgate Prison. She had been serving her sentence with quiet endurance, forcing herself to survive each monotonous day. Cleaning floors, enduring the harsh routine, and trying to numb her thoughts had become her way of life. But as she gripped the mop handle, her body betrayed her — dizziness washed over her, and before she could steady herself, the world went black.

When she regained consciousness, Lydia found herself lying on a thin mattress in the prison hospital. The sterile smell of disinfectant filled her lungs, and her head ached violently. A familiar figure stood by her bedside — Nurse Gloria, a kind-hearted woman often whispered about by the inmates for her compassion. Lydia had never personally interacted with her before; she preferred keeping her distance from everyone. But this time, she had no choice.

Gloria spoke softly, her voice calm and motherly. “You fainted during your shift,” she explained. Lydia, groggy and disoriented, nodded faintly. Fainting wasn’t unusual for prisoners — malnutrition, exhaustion, and stress were daily realities in Westgate. But Gloria’s next words didn’t fit the routine explanation. She leaned in, her tone serious and almost secretive. “I ran some tests to see why you collapsed.”

Lydia’s brows furrowed. Tests? The nurse’s expression made her heart race. Something was wrong. And then Gloria said it — words that hit Lydia like a lightning strike.

“You’re three months pregnant.”

For a moment, Lydia’s world went silent. The walls, the lights, the nurse — everything faded into a blur of disbelief. Pregnant? That couldn’t be right. Her throat went dry as she tried to process the impossible. Three months. Her hands instinctively flew to her stomach, pressing against the rough fabric of her prison uniform. There was nothing — no bump, no sign of life — yet Gloria’s certainty left no room for denial.

Lydia’s first reaction was refusal. “No,” she whispered. Her voice trembled. “That can’t be right.” But Gloria simply nodded, her expression heavy with empathy. “It’s right, Lydia. I double-checked the results myself.”

The truth settled like a stone in Lydia’s gut. The symptoms she’d ignored — the morning dizziness, the fevers, the missed periods — suddenly made sense. Deep down, she knew this was no mistake. Panic clawed at her chest as she realized what this meant. Her past — the one she’d buried so carefully since the day she was arrested — came rushing back. The man she had loved, the night she had tried to forget, the betrayal that had shattered her life.

Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall in front of Gloria. She couldn’t afford weakness here. Her voice was barely a whisper when she pleaded, “Please… you can’t tell anyone. No one can know about this.”

Gloria studied her for a long moment. Lydia could see the internal conflict behind the nurse’s eyes — between her duty to report and her compassion for the broken woman before her. Finally, Gloria sighed softly and nodded. “I won’t say a word,” she promised. Relief washed over Lydia like a wave, but it was fleeting. Gloria wasn’t finished. “But you have to promise me something too. You’ll come back for regular checkups. No skipping, no excuses. You and the baby need to be monitored. Do you understand?”

Lydia nodded mutely, emotion choking her voice. She didn’t trust herself to speak. The nurse gave her hand a gentle squeeze before stepping away to inform the guards that Lydia needed rest.

The walk back to her cell felt endless. Two guards flanked her on either side, but she barely noticed them. Her mind was spinning, replaying Gloria’s words over and over — three months pregnant. Each repetition felt like a hammer blow. She stumbled into her cell, collapsing onto the thin, creaky cot. The metal door slammed shut behind her, sealing her inside with the suffocating truth.

She stared at the ceiling for a long time before curling up on her side. Her trembling hands hovered over her stomach, fear twisting in her chest. She could barely keep herself alive in this place — how could she protect an unborn child? Westgate wasn’t meant for fragile things. It was a graveyard of hope, a place that crushed even the strongest spirits. What kind of life could she possibly give her baby behind these bars?

The tears she had fought earlier now spilled freely, sliding down her cheeks as silent sobs wracked her body. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, as if she could shield the tiny life inside her from the cruelty of the world beyond her cell walls.

For the first time in years, Lydia prayed. Not for freedom, not for revenge — just for strength. For the chance to protect this unexpected child growing inside her.

As she turned her hand, the faint glint of her wedding band caught her eye. The ring mocked her, its shine a cruel reminder of the life she had lost. Three months ago, everything had been perfect — or so she thought. Her marriage had felt like a fairy tale. Even though her in-laws despised her, she had still believed love could conquer everything. Her husband had been her safe haven, her anchor.

Until the night everything fell apart.

The memory was sharp and unforgiving — flashing lights, police sirens, his face twisted in disgust as she was dragged away in handcuffs. The betrayal in his eyes had hurt worse than the accusation itself. That image haunted her still, burned into her mind like a scar that would never fade.

Now, lying in that cold, dim cell, Lydia finally understood how deep her despair ran. The baby inside her was both a curse and a fragile glimmer of hope. A connection to the man she once loved — and the life she could never return to.

As exhaustion finally claimed her, her last thoughts were of him — the man she’d once trusted more than anyone. His expression, full of hatred and disbelief, was the last thing she saw before the darkness took her again.

And for the first time, Lydia realized she wasn’t just a prisoner anymore. She was a mother — trapped in a place where love and life were luxuries no one could afford. But no matter what, she silently vowed: she would find a way to protect her baby, even if it meant fighting the entire world from behind these bars.
