Lusting after 30

Chapter 30

She even wished he would just say something, anything

If he wanted to threaten or punish her, he might as well say something

Before Marcus could speak, Axell returned to the car

He’d just arranged for Jefferson’s public humiliation and reported, Dr. Sherman called. Galen woke up in a bad

state

He wants us to take Ms. Estrada to the hospital as soon as possible.”

Bertha’s attention snapped to Axell

She said, If the child is ill, don’t provoke him.”

He’s in the hospital with doctors and nurses, but he’s been crying for

Take me there now.”

Axell glanced at Marcus, who nodded, and started the car

you.”

For the entire ride, Marcus said nothing, but his eyes never left Bertha

Bertha felt a bit off today

He not only kept silent, but also the way he looked at her felt different today

n their previous encounters, his gaze had been sharp and frigid, utterly devoid of warmth

But today, she couldn’t pinpoint the difference, just a sensation, an intangible shift

Bertha wondered if Jefferson’s attack had made her paranoid or if Marcus was truly acting differently

She stayed tense throughout the drive, but the moment the car stopped, she flung open the door and raced into he hospital

First, she needed to see Galen

Second, she wanted to escape Marcus’s control before he could restrain her

Marcus watched her slender figure vanish, his deep eyes flickering with unreadable emotion as he stepped out

of the car

Axell felt confused

Marcus had been hunting Bertha since last night, and it wasn’t to help Galen. Yet now that he’d found her, he’d done nothing

His

gaze toward Bertha was indecipherable, though notably less hostile than before

Has Marcus finally moved on?Axell wondered

Did a single kiss from Bertha change everything

Truthfully, Axell hoped Marcus would abandon the search for Casper’s mother. After six fruitless years, the

odds seemed impossibly slim

And even if she were found, what if she’d already been married and had children

With Marcus’s character, he’d never force her to divorce

Axell, who’d served Marcus for years, knew him well

They were more like best friends, and he hoped Marcus could have a happy life

Bertha burst into Galen’s ward

Galen’s face was ashen after just one day

He lay trembling with eyes shut, muttering incoherently. No one knew what he was saying

His parents, Edgar and Dorothee Ellsworth, stood rigid beside a cluster of doctors, who pored over charts while Dorothee sobbed

Bertha bypassed formalities, rushing to Galen’s bed

Marcus followed, his stare unreadable

As Bertha examined Galen, he jolted awake with a scream

Bertha turned to Dorothee

She said,I need to be alone with him. Everyone, please leave.”

Edgar trust her. He nodded immediately, herding the group out

The door shut, trapping Galen’s howls inside while those outside could only listen

Menu

The Wallace family was in a frenzy. Galen’s grandmother, Julissa Wallace, snapped, I heard she’s not a doctor

no medical license, and we barely know her. How can you trust Galen with her?”

Dorothee sobbed uncontrollably while Edgar sighed

What choice do we have? We’ve consulted every expert, and no one can guarantee a cure. If this goes on, Galen’s life is at risk. Letting her try is our only shot.”

It was a lastditch effort anyway

Marcus frowned, torn. His mindset mirrored Edgar’s

He had hired countless doctors, but Casper never got better

Any sliver of hope was worth chasing

If not for past conflicts, he’d have let Bertha treat Casper long ago

Nearly half an hour later, the door swung open

Bertha stood in the frame. He’s calmed down. He’s hungryasking for crepes.”
