But something in his chest wavered. He was already starting to panic, even if he wouldn’t admit it.
Evelyn let out a bitter smile, thinking, ‘Whoever said that was right. If someone doesn’t love you, even if you drop dead, they’ll think you’re just pretending to sleep!
She shot Adrian a glare, then reached over and pressed the button.
A nurse’s voice came through. “How can I help you?”
“I think my stitches might’ve torn open. Can you get a doctor to check it?” Evelyn replied.
She was really in pain. The anesthesia had worn off, and the wound throbbed like crazy,
The nurse came in soon. Adrian stepped back and let the nurse check Evelyn’s wound. His eyes were fixed on Evelyn’s wound over the nurse’s shoulder.
The gauze was already soaked through with blood. His brows knitted together, and something unspoken twisted in his chest.
Without realizing it, he clenched his fists. The nurse wiped the blood away and clicked her tongue. “You really should be more careful. The stitches are torn. Don’t move. I’ll get the doctor right away.”
The nurse rushed out. Evelyn lay still, calm as ever. Her wound was exposed to the air, and the iodine sting plus the breeze the nurse stirred up made it feel like ice slicing through her skin.
She didn’t know if it was blood loss or just the aftermath of surgery, but it felt like she’d fallen into an ice pit.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know…” Adrian spoke up.
“Please leave.” Evelyn cut him off, not even bothering to look at him.
The doctor arrived in a hurry and began stitching her up.
While working, the doctor said to Adrian, “Sir, I’ll explain the aftercare instructions to you later. Don’t keep pulling on the wound, or she’ll end up with a nasty scar.”
Adrian didn’t even get the chance to say anything before Noah came running in, crying, “Dad, Claire passed out. You gotta check on her.”
Without hesitation, Adrian ran off.
The doctor glanced at Evelyn’s calm face and let out a quiet sigh. He reminded her not to tear the wound again, then left.
Evelyn pulled herself together quickly and dozed off not long after.
When she woke up again, her throat was parched. The water cup was right there on the nightstand, but she didn’t dare stretch too far, so she carefully inched her way up the bed.

Just as her fingers were about to touch the cup, footsteps came closer. A hand, with long, clean fingers, grabbed the cup before she could. Nathan held it steady, slipping a straw into the cup so she could drink while lying down.
Evelyn took small sips. The warm water brought real relief to her dry throat. After finishing almost the whole cup, she felt better.
“Mr. Ford, I’m sorry I didn’t finish the task on time,” she said to Nathan.
Nathan had a ruthless reputation in the business world. His word was law. Evelyn was confident that she could pass his test, but then everything went sideways. She was scared he’d back out of helping her with the divorce.
“Your health comes first,” Nathan said, not directly answering, but the words were enough to steady her
nerves.
Evelyn smiled, “Thank you, Mr. Ford.”
She had never imagined that in one of the lowest points of her life, the person standing by her side would be a man she barely knew.
Nathan replied, “Once you’re better, I hope to see something that really impresses me.”
Nathan arranged for a caretaker to look after her, then went back to his office.
That afternoon, William, Evelyn’s father, rushed to the hospital. The moment Evelyn saw him, all the emotions she’d been holding back crashed in.
She swallowed down the lump in her throat and managed not to cry.
“I told you not to go to the wild alone. Look what you’ve done to yourself,” William grumbled. His tone was scolding, but the concern in his voice was obvious.
Evelyn reassured him, “I’m fine, Dad. What brings you here, by the way?”
Evelyn thought, ‘I didn’t even get the chance to call him. Nathan signed the consent form for me. Dad shouldn’t have known I was here. Unless it was Adrian?‘
William then told her the answer, “Adrian called me. He told me you were in the hospital. Evie, he also said you asked for a divorce. Is that true?”
