Evelyn just wanted to cut ties with that heartless father and son as soon as possible.

“You don’t trust me?” Nathan’s brows drew together slightly as he studied her, his eyes sharp and unreadable.
Evelyn shook her head and explained, “Nah, I just really want this over with.”
Nathan gave a small nod, stood up, and walked out of the office while adjusting his suit jacket.
Evelyn had no clue what that meant. She stared after him, unsure whether he was mad or just being quiet. Joey nudged her, hinting for her to follow.
Evelyn flashed her a grateful smile, then hurried out after Nathan.
Since he had a meeting to attend, Nathan walked Evelyn to the Legal Department and left.
When Evelyn saw the person Nathan had assigned to handle her divorce case, she was genuinely surprised.

It was Carson Garner, Horizon Group’s top lawyer. The guy was the legal team’s backbone and had won more cases for Nathan than anyone could count. So far, the man had never lost.
Carson asked, “Ms. Stevenson. Good to meet you. What are your terms for divorce?”
Carson had already looked into her case. Adrian cheated during the marriage, so Evelyn had the upper hand. For someone like Carson, this case was easy work.
Still, since Nathan was the one who sent her, Carson couldn’t treat it lightly.
Evelyn replied with a calm face, “Split the marital assets fifty–fifty. I want every gift Adrian ever gave to the mistress returned. I also want a public apology from her. And… I’m giving up custody of the kid.”
She wasn’t here to play nice. Since Adrian wanted to protect Clarissa, she was going to make both of them choke on it.
“Got it. Carson began jotting things down.
All of Evelyn’s demands were within reason. The part that caught his attention, though, was how quickly she gave up custody.
In Carson’s opinion, women should be decisive. He’d seen Noah before. That kid was already a mini version of Adrian, having no concept of right or wrong. He thought walking away from them was the right decision.
“Mr. Garner, I want the court date set ASAP,” Evelyn said firmly. She didn’t want to waste another second or drag things out any longer than necessary.
“Understood.” Carson nodded.
With the divorce case finally in motion, Evelyn could breathe again. She stepped out of Carson’s office and ran straight into Nathan, who’d just finished his meeting.

“Come with me,” he said lightly to her.
Evelyn then followed him to his office.

Nathan took off his jacket and tossed it casually over the back of his chair. He pulled out a seat, sat down, then slid a document across the desk toward her.
Evelyn opened it and saw a job contract. Her eyes skimmed every line and term carefully.
“I can’t quit in the next three years, and the penalty for breaking the contract is ten million dollars?” Evelyn stared at Nathan in disbelief.
Nathan raised his eyebrows, leaning back in his chair with that usual calm arrogance, legs crossed, hand resting lazily on the armrest.
He replied, “You know better than anyone. In Riverhold, I’m the only one who can actually help you.”
Evelyn knew he wasn’t wrong. Adrian was powerful enough to shake the entire city with one move. She’d turned to Nathan for that exact reason.
Still, ten million? That was insane.
The rest of the terms seemed fair, though. After thinking it through, Evelyn signed her name.
Seeing her finish, Nathan stood and held out his hand. “Welcome aboard.”
Evelyn took and shook it firmly. “Thank you, Mr. Ford. I still have a few things to take care of. Can I start tomorrow?”
“Sure,” replied Nathan.
Evelyn let go of his hand and walked out. Nathan watched her leave, a faint smirk tugging at his lips.
Evelyn headed back to the apartment she’d bought before getting married. Even though she hadn’t lived there in years, someone had always come by to clean. Thus, the place was spotless.
