Chapter 17
Chapter 17
“We’re getting divorced. No point living together anymore,” she said, calm as ever.
Adrian actually laughed–furious and stunned.

“Evelyn, you’ve been a housewife for years. How the hell do you plan to survive without me?” Adrian sneered, his eyes full of contempt. “Oh wait, right, you hooked up with Riverhold’s richest man, Nathan.
“Guess you do have some leverage to walk away. But let’s be real, a secondhand woman like you? Bet Nathan’s just playing around for the thrill.”
Every word dripped with insult. Adrian always had a way of tearing her down, dismissing everything she ever did for their home. To him, staying home to cook and clean was easy living.
Adrian had sky–high standards for chores. Underwear had to be hand–washed. He didn’t trust maids, so Evelyn had to do it herself.
His shirts had to be pressed perfectly, and the clothes should be arranged in the closet by color.
Noah had severe food allergies. Adrian was picky about food too. Evelyn spent hours in the kitchen every day, perfecting recipes so they could eat what they liked.
She handled every little thing for them, down to the last detail.
Six years of marriage had worn away her edges. Now that she was fully disappointed, she realized how deep Adrian’s emotional manipulation went.
She lost herself trying to please her husband and son. Yet the worst part was that neither of them ever gave a damn. They never saw her as a family member, just a live–in maid. Her feelings never mattered.
They used to be her whole world. But the second she chose to love herself more, they stopped mattering.
Evelyn said coolly, “Adrian, you think you’re better? You insult me like that, but what about Clarissa? She’s thirty years old. What, you think she’s still a virgin or something? Calling me secondhand? You’re the one treating someone else’s leftovers like gold.”
She saw Adrian’s face darken on the screen, and a wave of satisfaction hit her.
She thought with a smug smile, ‘What? Did I say anything wrong? I’m just using his logic against him. So when he says it, it’s the truth, but when I say it, it’s not allowed?‘
“You’re not even in the same league as Claire. Who do you think you are?” Adrian snapped, the words flying out of him before he even thought. Then his eyes flickered, like he realized he’d gone too far.
“I’m nothing, of course.” Evelyn’s voice was light, but the sarcasm cut deep. “Why are you so mad? Wait, is Clarissa really secondhand? Yeah, you guys were apart for years. Who knows how many guys she’s been with
since?”
Evelyn had never been the kind of person to throw out low blows. But Clarissa? She didn’t deserve grace.

Chapter 17
Evelyn had never been a docile rabbit. She’d just toned herself down for the sake of her family.
But the real Evelyn? She was a lion on the plains, a wolf in the wild.

Anyone who dared mess with her, she’d take her time with them. She didn’t care if people talked behind her back. She was gonna make sure those people lived under her shadow for the rest of their lives.
Adrian stared at her like he was seeing her for the first time. “What the hell has gotten into you? You are insane. How can you say something so vile?”

Evelyn let out a mocking laugh. “Everything I say depends on how I’m treated. You think my words are dirty? They’re nothing compared to the filth you and Clarissa have been doing.
“When exactly did you guys start hooking up? If it were a while back, maybe I should get tested for STDs. Just in case you passed something on to me.”
She meant every word. Adrian was the only man she’d ever been with. But Clarissa? She had no idea. Honestly, Evelyn was starting to think a full check–up wasn’t a bad idea at all.
