Chapter 8
DREW’S POV
“What the hell…”

She didn’t get to finish. I pinned her to the wall and used one hand to clamp tightly over her mouth.
“Shh,” I whispered, eyes fixed on the door. “They’ll hear us.”
Her shallow breaths hit my palm. I could feel the heat radiating off her. The soft curve of her lips beneath my hand, the faint tremble in her chest, made my skin tingle. I was supposed to be listening for Walter. But all I could hear was her heartbeat.
Then her scent shifted.
My head snapped back down to her face.
The scent of her arousal flooded the air between us. It was thick, sweet, and impossible to ignore. Her big, beautiful
green eyes were fire now. Her lips parted beneath my palm, and her breath started coming even faster.
My hand tingled even more. Every nerve in me lit up.
I slowly pulled my hand away from her mouth.
“I didn’t mean to scare you,” I muttered, stepping back. “That was my father’s head of security. If he saw me outside your room this late, it’d raise more questions than I feel like answering.”
“You’re probably right,” she said. Her voice was scratchy, like it had been dragged through gravel.
There was an awkward pause, so to get rid of it, I glanced around her room. It was way cozier than mine. Cluttered in a charming, chaotic kind of way. The walls were packed with books, piles and piles of them. Maybe two hundred.
“Are you going to read all of these?” I asked, walking over and pulling one from the shelf.
The cover was ridiculous. A shirtless vampire biting into some poor girl’s neck.
I’d bet my left testicle she was supposedly a virgin.
I rolled my eyes. “Is this what turns you on?”
She yanked it from my hand like I’d insulted her. “I’ve already read them all. And please don’t touch my
books.”
“Like, every single one of them?” I eyed the rest of the collection. “So I guess you like reading.”
“I love it.”

The happiness in her voice told me she meant it.
“There’s a whole library in the east wing. I could show it to you sometime, if you’d like.”
She blinked. “Sure. As long as your girlfriend’s cool with it.”
“I don’t have a girlfriend.”
She raised a brow. “Seriously?”
“What, is that so hard to believe?”
She looked away. “No. It’s just… you know what, it doesn’t matter.”
I almost laughed. Almost. She was so innocent and cute.

She stepped toward the door, rubbing her arm. “It’s late. I should get some sleep now.” Her voice dropped a notch.
I nodded, but I didn’t move. Neither did she.
The tension sat between us like smoke. Why was I feeling like this? Her lips were beautiful.
‘Snap out of it,’ Remus snarled inside my head. ‘Yeah, she has the best lips ever, but remember why we’re here‘
‘Right.
I tilted my head slightly. “It’s just… people said you were losing it out there. Like you saw a ghost. Are you sure you didn’t see something… strange out in the woods?”
She froze.
“No,” she said, way too fast. “I saw nothing.”
Liar.
I stepped in, close enough to smell the lie on her skin. Her pupils jumped. Her breath was ragged.
I knew she saw Remus. So why did she lie about it?
“Alright,” I said, letting it go for now. I pulled the door open and stepped back into the hallway, “Good night,
Becca.”
“Good night, Drew.”
She gently closed the door.
‘You were right, Remus. She’s hiding something, because why wouldn’t she tell me or Father what she saw?
Unless she knows it was me.’

‘I don’t think so. She would have been terrified of you just now. Maybe she’s still in shock and can’t fathom. what she saw.‘
‘Either way, I’ve got to ensure she doesn’t go running her mouth to the wrong person.‘
I woke to the sound of screaming. It was so loud it almost made my wolf’s ears bleed.
I sat up, with my heart hammering and my breath stuck in my chest. It was coming from down the hall.
‘It’s Hilary. The Luna is in pain,‘ Remus scratched at the surface, trying to push me to get to her.
I was out of bed in seconds. No shirt. No shoes. The cold floor barely registered as I ran.
The sound led me straight to my father’s room. I didn’t think to knock.
I just kicked the door open.
It slammed against the wall, and I froze for half a second. Hilary was on her knees with blood running from her nose, and Father had a fist wrapped in her hair.
“Tell me what she told you!” he roared, then punched her again.
“Father, NO!” I rushed him, shoving him hard enough that he stumbled back a step. I pulled Hilary behind me, and stood like a wall between them.
His eyes burned into mine. “Get out of the way, Drew.”
I didn’t move.
“That brat Becca told her something,” he growled. “And she’s hiding it from me.”
“If she is, there are other ways to deal with it. You don’t need to beat on her. She’s your wife and mate, plus she’s this pack’s Luna now. I won’t stand by and watch you hurt her like this.”
He let out a dark laugh. “You’re right. But, you were the one who told me she saw you earlier, I just don’t understand why the brat didn’t tell anyone what she saw. Unless her mother already told her about us.”
“No! Devon, I didn’t say anything to her. I promise,” Hilary sobbed. I felt guilty, I should have kept that fact to myself.
“Maybe I should go have a little chat with that mouthy girl myself. Maybe she’ll be more cooperative.”
Remus stirred inside me, snarling. ‘I don’t care if he’s our father. If he touches her, he’s one dead alpha.’”
My eyes flashed gold. “You’re not going anywhere near her.”
His smile was slow and nasty. It made my skin crawl. “Wait a second… is my son crushing on his sister?”
“She’s not my sister,” I barked.

“Step, half, foster. Same difference. Whatever she is, she saw you out there. If she figures out what we are and starts talking, we’ve got a problem.”
He took a step toward the door. I blocked him again. He wasn’t laughing anymore.
“I need to handle this,” he said tightly. “Now move.”
“Or what?”
“Or I’ll go through you.”
Before either of us could escalate it, Hilary’s voice cracked through the tension.
“Wait,” she said, wiping blood from her lip. “Devon… what would you do to her if you found out she did see something?”
He glanced over my shoulder at her. “Depends on what she saw. I have a team that could teach her about our way of life. You know, make things easier on her,” he grinned. He was such a fucking liar, but Hilary bought his lie.
“She told me she saw… a werewolf. Dragging a dead body. That’s it. She doesn’t know it was Drew. She doesn’t suspect it was anyone from here.”
He exhaled through his nose slowly, as he thought through things.
“And can you keep her quiet?” he asked. “Convince her she imagined it?”
“I’ll try.
I’ll say it was the dark, and that she was just shocked and terrified. I’ll tell her anything to keep her safe. I’ll make her believe it.”
He considered that, then gave a stiff nod.
“Fine. Then go clean yourself up. I don’t want to look at you like that.”
She got up, one hand covering her face, and disappeared into the bathroom.
When I looked at him again, something in me was cracking open.
“You didn’t have to do that,” I said quietly. “You didn’t have to hit her.”
He poured himself a drink like we were having a casual chat. “Don’t be dramatic. One day, when you’re Alpha, you’ll understand. Sometimes women need a reminder of who’s in charge. She’s been testing me all day, snapping orders like she runs the place.”
“You’re disgusting and cruel”
He looked at me over the rim of his glass. “And those are the things that have kept me alive. Being this way is
how I’ve won wars.”
I felt my nails digging into my palms. Remus wanted out. He wanted to tear him apart. But I held him back.

Barely.
“What would you really do to Becca,” I asked, “if she told someone about what she saw tonight?”
He didn’t blink. “If she opens her pretty little mouth… then she’ll leave me with no choice. I’ll have to kill her.”
