REBECCA’S POV

I was standing by the wall near the pool, feeling awkward and wildly out of place as everyone kept looking at me like I didn’t belong. My skin crawled under their eyes. It felt like I was naked, standing on a stage with a spotlight, and they were all waiting for me to trip so they could take pictures of my ass and post it on the
internet.
“So, you think she’s fucking Drew?” a girl asked, her voice loud and sharp like she was used to being heard. She was taller than most of the partygoers, legs for days, cheekbones that could cut glass, and an attitude that screamed, I’ve slept with your man and I don’t regret it.
Edith was lounging beside her, looking cool and aloof as she took a drag from something that smelled… definitely not legal. Her eyes slid over to me.
Edith sniffed the air.
“Nah,” she said casually, blowing out a lazy cloud of smoke. “She’s a virgin.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” the other girl nodded. She sniffed too. “She smells… weird. Not bad. Just… weird.”
Okay, what the hell? Why was everyone around here obsessed with how I smelled?
Edith’s head jerked slightly. She sniffed again, harder this time and then her eyes widened. Her whole demeanor shifted in a blink.
“Leave us,” she snapped at the tall girl.
“What? Why?” the girl whined.
“Leave us alone now, Shelly!” Edith barked, her tone suddenly serious.
“Jeez, fine,” Shelly muttered, flipping her long blond curls over her shoulder and storming off in her heels like she was about to stomp a hole through the backyard.
Edith flicked her lighter, lit the tip of her blunt again, and leaned against the railing near the pool. “So…. Drew’s your stepbrother.”
“Yeah.”
She studied me some more. “Tell me about yourself. About your mother. Is she like Drew and her husband?”
“What do you mean?” 1 blinked. “I don’t understand.”
“Like… can she transform?” she asked, but there was a sharp edge behind her words, like she was trying to poke something out of me without saying the thing outright.
“If you mean transform from sweet to psycho in under five seconds? Then no, my mom is not like Devon or
Drew.”

Chapter 17
“You call the Alpha by his first name?” Edith raised an amused brow.

“Why does everyone keep calling these guys Alpha around here? Is it like a small–town cultural thing?” I asked her, being that she referred to Scott as Alpha earlier.
Edith chuckled, took another puff from her blunt, and gave me a look that made my skin tingle. “I see. You’re a clueless human.”
I flinched. “And what type of human are you?” I asked, definitely offended by her remark.
Her smirk didn’t falter. “Drew can never be with you, you know? It’s against the law.”
“You mean like incest? Because we’re not blood–related.”
“No, baby,” she laughed coldly. “Not that kind of law. There are… other laws. Ones you know nothing about.”
Okay, I was starting to feel like I walked into the wrong kind of movie. Some twisted mix between Twilight, Gossip Girl, and a fever dream.
“Whatever, we’re just friends anyway.”
“But are you really? I saw how possessive he is of you.”
“Really and that’s just Drew. He can be a little much at times.”
“Why did he invite you here knowing you were nothing like us?”
“Maybe he likes to dance and wanted company,” I said, trying to keep it light even though my nerves were unraveling.
“I’ve known Drew since we were kids,” she said, stepping closer. “That boy doesn’t dance. Doesn’t smile. And he sure as hell doesn’t bring girls to parties, unless he wants to see them naked.
She laughed again, this time it was humorless. I clutched my arms around my waist, my eyes darting across the backyard. Every pair of eyes seemed to be watching me. Whispering. Smirking. I felt like I was being hunted.
Where the hell is Drew?
Just then, I saw him. He stepped out into the backyard with Scott, cutting through the crowd like he owned the place. A girl immediately launched herself into Scott’s arms, kissing him like she hadn’t seen him in years.
But Drew was walking straight toward me.
I didn’t even wait. I basically ran into his chest, burying my face against his shirt.
“I thought you forgot about me,” I muttered, my voice a bit too breathy, too girly. Ugh.
He wrapped an arm around me, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “I could never forget you. Even if I
wanted to.”

Chapter 17
His voice was soft. So warm it made my heart ache.

“You okay?” he asked, his eyes scanning mine like he was searching for something broken.
“It’s loud. And… everyone keeps staring at me.”
“That’s because you’re the hottest thing here,” he said simply.
I chuckled, and of course, the snort came out. I instantly cringed.
“You’re just saying that because you dressed me.”

“No,” he murmured, leaning in so only I could hear him. His voice dropped into that low, dark, sexy place that made my knees weak. “I’m saying that because it’s true. And because I’m about to lose my shit watching other guys look at you.”
Oh, hell.
If he kept talking like that, I was going to combust.
“Should I go change in one of those garbage bags?” I teased, trying to shake off the heat pooling in my stomach.
“Don’t you dare,” he growled.
Then the music shifted. The thumping bass was replaced by something slower. Something soft and intimate.
“Come on,” he said. “Let’s dance.”
“I heard you don’t dance,” I replied. Edith had told me earlier he didn’t even smile.
“I don’t. But for you? I’ll make an exception.”
“But I don’t know how to dance,” I said shyly.
“I’ll teach you.”
“Drew-”
I protested when he took my hand and pulled me into him. I gasped when I felt my chest pressed to his. My palms spread across his chest as I struggled to catch my breath.
“Just follow my lead.”
Soon I was being spun and twirled like I was the lead princess in a fairytale. Drew was smooth on his feet. His eyes never left me as we danced. His eyes were so beautiful it was like they were pulling me in. I needed to feel him closer. So, with newfound confidence, I wrapped my arms around his neck, not caring if we were the
centre of attention.
“Becca,” he said softly, “Can I tell you something… and you promise it won’t make things weird?”

He exhaled loudly. “You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen,” he confessed, brushing his thumb across my cheek. “Your eyes are like enchanted fireflies… and your lips are so fucking tempting they should be a sin.”
My whole body melted. I opened my mouth to respond when I heard a loud CRASH!
A beer bottle exploded at our feet.
“You fucked me and left me. No word. No nothing!” Edith’s voice rang out, thick with alcohol and venom. “Now you’re here dancing with a hu–m…”
Drew’s hands dropped from my waist as he turned toward her.
“Edith! You’re drunk. Can we talk about this some other time?” he asked, trying to stay calm.
“No. We can’t,” she slurred. “I love you. And you’re choosing a lesser being over me. She’s a hu—”
He slapped a hand over her mouth. “You will not say another word.”
Scott suddenly appeared out of nowhere. “Hey, you two. Maybe take this somewhere else? People are watching.”
“Watch her,” Drew said, tossing Edith over his shoulder like she weighed nothing. “I’ll be right back.”
“Where are you going? I asked.
“Don’t worry. He’ll be back in no time,” Scott nodded.
My eyes were glued on Drew’s back as he jogged away with Edith.
“Yes, big daddy!” she squealed, giggling as she clung to him. “This is how you whisked me away that night you fucked my tonsils out in the woods!”
My jaw dropped.
I stood frozen. My face burned. My jealousy reached a new level. My brain went to a dark, dangerous place.
I thought about every moan, every gasp, every imaginary thing Drew and Edith ever did together.
Scott chuckled as he placed a arm on my shoulder. “Easy, tiger. You want something to drink? Water? Soda?”
“I want something to drink, alright,” I growled. “But it needs to be something way stronger than water or soda.”
Because if I had to stand here one more second imagining Drew Clawbelle and his sexy washboard abs pressed against that insane girl in the woods, I was going to explode.
