Chapter 36

The woman was fuming, arms on her hips, eyes narrowing as she barked like a street fighter.
Evelyn stayed calm, standing right where she was as the woman turned around and started ranting to the neighbors, “Hey, I’m telling y’all, keep an eye on your husbands. The authorities are cracking down hard on sex work.
“Now that she can’t make money with her body, she’s moved on to scamming men. Classic honey trap.”
She made it sound so real, like she’d seen it with her own eyes. People nearby started muttering, throwing out insults like rocks.
Evelyn didn’t flinch. She just stared coldly at the woman’s performance and let out a dry laugh.
She said in a flat tone, “So you’re the one who’s been spreading crap about me behind my back? Didn’t you say your husband was innocent? Fine. Let’s see what the neighbors think.”
Evelyn opened the group chat and dropped the footage from the cameras at her front door and in the rooms.
Within seconds, dozens of video clips hit the feed. The group chat blew up like a firecracker.
The woman froze. She hadn’t seen that coming. Her face went pale as the full picture played out in front of
everyone.
She spat with a disappointed look, “That son of a bitch. He lied to me.” Without another word, she turned on her heels and stormed off, spitting curses under her breath.
Just then, Evelyn’s phone rang. It was the tech guy Walter had sent to install the new smart lock.
The guy was quick and professional. Less than thirty minutes later, the lock was installed, and after walking Evelyn through how it worked, he politely took his leave.
Evelyn was still getting familiar with the new system when she felt a shadow loom over her. She looked up and surprisingly found that Adrian was standing there and looked at her with icy eyes.
She went to close the door, not in the mood for any of his crap. But Adrian was faster. He shoved his foot in before it could shut.
With a bit of force, he pushed his way into the apartment.
Evelyn glared at him, snapping, “Get out.”
Adrian walked over and sat on the sofa. From that spot, he could see her face clearly.
He loosened his tie, his eyes dark with irritation. “Are you done acting out yet? Noah needs you. If you just come home, I’ll clear your name.”
To Adrian, men like Nathan would never go for a woman like Evelyn. In his head, Evelyn still revolved around him and Noah. He thought she was just throwing a tantrum to get his attention.

After all, over the past six whole years, Evelyn’s entire world had been about them. He couldn’t believe that in just a few days, she suddenly turned into a cold and different person. It didn’t add up.
Evelyn’s laugh was short and sharp. “Do you not understand plain English? I told you, I WANT A DIVORCE. You were served the summons. You think I’m still playing hard to get?”
Evelyn felt it was almost funny. She couldn’t even understand why Adrian was always so confident and
arrogant.
Adrian scowled. “I came here to give you a chance to walk away with some dignity. Don’t push your luck.” He didn’t expect that even when he put his dignity aside and talked to her, she still refused to go back. Evelyn’s patience completely snapped. She walked straight to the door and yanked it open. “Leave.”
Adrian stared at her like she was a stranger. The Evelyn he knew would’ve dropped everything the second he or Noah needed her. That was just who she was.
‘Is she really into Nathan now?‘ he wondered, suspicion flaring.
He stood up, his voice dripping with condescension. “Look at you. You’ve been out of touch with reality for six years. Without me, you’ve got nothing. But if you come back and just take care of me and Noah, I’ll pretend none of this ever happened.”
