Evelyn swallowed hard, her mind racing. ‘I didn’t flinch facing wild animals. This is just a drunk loser. He broke into my place in the middle of the night. If I hurt him, it’s self–defense.
And sometimes, when fear pushed one far enough, they’d stop being afraid.
The man kept kicking the door like a lunatic. Evelyn rushed to the closet and pulled out an old necktie–left behind by William when he’d crashed at her place after Melissa threw him out.
She wrapped the tie around her hand, securing the knife tightly.
She knew the knife only protected her if she was the one holding it. In the man’s hand, it’d become a weapon to carve her apart.
With a loud crack, the door finally gave way, slamming hard against the wall.
Evelyn stood up and faced the drunk in the doorway, her expression ice–cold.
“Knew you were home. Wow, what a hottie,” the man slurred, stumbling toward her, his eyes crawling all over her.
Even in pajamas, his stare felt like she’d been stripped bare.
“Don’t come any closer, or I’ll kill you,” Evelyn warned, raising the knife.
But clearly, the man didn’t take her seriously. “Look at you, sweetheart. You think you can hurt me? Best behave and make this easy, or I will get rough.”
He lunged at Evelyn. She tried to dodge, thinking his drunk state would slow him down, but he was quicker than expected. His hand clamped around her ankle, yanking her off balance. Before she could react, she hit the floor hard.
Ignoring the pain, Evelyn kicked and flailed around wildly, trying to break free.
The man said with a sinister smile, “What smooth skin, sweetheart. You’re a real treat.”
Evelyn scrambled upright and brought the knife down hard, slicing straight into his wrist.
The man hadn’t expected her to actually fight back. He howled in pain and jerked back. But the alcohol numbed him too much to care. The blood just made him worse. “You bitch, I’m gonna ruin you tonight.”
He pounced on Evelyn again. Evelyn bolted for the door, but just as she reached it, a hand yanked her back by the hair. Pain shot across her scalp and she let out a gasp. She flailed the knife backward blindly.
Hearing the man hiss in pain, Evelyn prayed inwardly, ‘Helena, please, get here fast. Pretty please!
Soon, a siren cut through the night. The man froze, then shoved Evelyn away and ran toward the balcony. He peeked down and saw flashing lights pulling up to the building.

Evelyn took the chance and bolted, rushing for the front door. But just as her hand reached the handle, the man caught her again, grabbing her hair and dragging her back.
He spat, “Stupid bitch, you better think hard about what you tell the cops. I got in once, and I can get in again.”
He yanked her head toward the doorframe and slammed it forward.
Evelyn knew the police had arrived. However, her skull rang, and her eyes were blurred due to the impact. Looking at the man’s bloodshot eyes, Evelyn thought nervously, ‘Is he actually going to kill me?‘
She brought the knife right up to the side of his neck, the blade kissing his carotid. She whispered in his ear, “You’re threatening me now?
“You broke into my home and hurt me. If I kill you right now, it’s self–defense. You die and no one’s gonna cry for you.”
The cruelness in her eyes made the man freeze. She was dead serious, ready to die, ready to take him with her.
The man had thought she’d be easy to scare. But Evelyn was actually feral. He was being paid to scare Evelyn, not die in her house.
Before the man could even think about backing off, the door flew open with a crash. Evelyn whipped her head toward the sound just in time to see Nathan charging in like a storm.
He landed a punch straight to the man’s jaw, sending him flying. Then he slammed a boot down on the guy’s chest, grinding him into the floor without mercy.
