Nathan had seen all kinds of women in his life, but the second he saw Evelyn walk in, she took his breath away.
Just then, Helena’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the text, then handed it over to Evelyn.
“I knew it was her,” Evelyn said with a cold laugh, her eyes scanning the hall for Clarissa.
Clarissa was hanging on Adrian’s arm, fluttering around the guests, clearly trying to make sure everyone noticed she was with Adrian.
Her little performance couldn’t have been more obvious, which only made Evelyn roll her eyes, scoffing, “She’s trying way too hard.”
Evelyn knew Adrian wasn’t a complete idiot. Eventually, he’d come to his senses and see Clarissa for who she really was.
People would always think what they’d lost was better than what they’d have. Evelyn was genuinely curious whether those two could actually keep up the act long–term.
“Adrian, what happened between you and Evelyn?” a schoolfellow asked, catching him while Clarissa had stepped away. “I still remember how grand your wedding was. Don’t go doing something you’ll regret.”
Evelyn was about to head over to wish Taylor a happy birthday when she caught those words.
Adrian said in a cold tone, “I already regret it. Evelyn was never worth it.”
One of them spotted Evelyn nearby and gave a stiff laugh, scrambling to smooth things over. “Don’t mind him, Evelyn. He’s been drinking. Talking out of his ass.”
Evelyn gave a small smile and nodded. Then, still calm, she cut straight through it. “We’re getting divorced. My lawyer is dealing with it. So whoever he ends up with, it’s got nothing to do with me.
“I’d appreciate it if you guys would stop lumping us together. Oh, and…”
She pulled a folded paper out of her purse and handed it to Adrian. “I was hoping we could handle things like adults, but since you’ve been dragging your feet, I have to bring the summons from the court to you.”
Adrian just stood there, not taking it. Evelyn didn’t miss a beat, folded the paper again, and slipped it into the inside pocket of his suit. She smiled, “Be sure to show up.”
She kept that graceful, calm smile on her face the whole time. The schoolfellows watching nearby couldn’t help feeling a little sad.
The love story that once had them all believing in fairy tales had come to such an end. It was hard not to feel disappointed.

Chapter 25
“You guys carry on. I’m going to give Mr. Brennan his gift,” Evelyn said with a nod, using the excuse to leave.
The little scene hadn’t caused a stir in the room, but Adrian felt like someone had dumped ice water down his spine. He didn’t expect Evelyn to be serious this time.
Clarissa, meanwhile, hadn’t taken her eyes off Evelyn for a second. She completely misread the moment Evelyn handed Adrian the papers and decided she was flirting with him right there in public.
Clarissa clenched her jaw tightly, cursing inwardly, ‘I just leave for a while, and Evelyn’s already starting her drama. Clearly, the lessons I’ve been teaching her lately haven’t been enough. Tonight, I’ll make sure she’s humiliated beyond repair.
Evelyn delivered her gift to Taylor and chatted with him for a bit, but with all the well–wishers crowding around, she soon excused herself and returned to her seat with Helena.
She had barely sat down when Clarissa came strutting over, hips swinging like she was walking a runway.
One of her hands was on her waist, the other gently resting on her stomach like she couldn’t wait to announce her pregnancy to the world.
“Look at her. What a poser. Adrian’s taste has really taken a nosedive,” Helena muttered under her breath.
Evelyn didn’t react. She just picked up a small dessert and placed it on Helena’s plate. “Try this. It’s pretty good.”
As they spoke, Evelyn noticed someone approaching from the corner of her eye. A moment later, she heard that overly sweet voice.
“Evelyn, do you have a minute to talk?” Clarissa asked with a fake smile.
