Chapter 29

Just as he pocketed the money, Nathan’s men came to find him. Only then did he realize just how badly he’d messed up. He’d pissed off the last man he ever wanted to mess with

The waiter reached into his pocket and pulled out the 600 bucks Clarissa had given him, holding it out like a peace offering

Nathan’s eyes narrowed with a flicker of mockery. Come here.”

Legs shaking, the waiter stepped forward with the cash, then suddenly dropped to his knees. He crawled the last few steps, practically bowing at Nathan’s feet. Mr. Ford, I swear that’s all she gave me. I didn’t know who I was dealing with. Please believe me.”

Gosh, why did I say yes? For 600 bucks? I must’ve lost my damn mind,he thought while sweating bullets

Why so nervous? I didn’t say anything yet,Nathan said casually

He pulled a cigarette from his pack and held it to his lips. Clayton stepped in and lit it

Nathan took a slow, deep drag, then exhaled a thick cloud of smoke, his eyes locked on the trembling man before him. That sharp, cutting stare made the waiter feel completely exposed

The poor guy looked like he might pass out from sheer terror. Never in his life had he thought he’d be talking facetoface with someone like Nathan Ford, let alone so close

Even though Nathan had a slight smile on his lips, the air around him burned with quiet fury

What else can I do for you, Mr. Ford?the waiter asked in a shaking voice. He figured there was no way out, so he might as well brace for whatever was coming

Nathan looked at the flame of his cigarette and said, I can give you a chance. If you get it right, there’s money in it for you.”

The waiter nodded and answered without missing a beat, I’m at your disposal, sir. And forget the money. Working for you is my great honor.”

He was terrified that if he were a second later, Nathan would deal with him

Word on the street was that Nathan Ford didn’t play nice, and when he got ruthless, even his own people weren’t safe

And as a nobody like him, he couldn’t survive offending men like Nathan

After giving the waiter a few quiet instructions, Nathan stepped back while Clayton handed him an envelope

The waiter opened it and froze. Inside was 6,000 dollars in cash. He immediately refused. But Nathan’s expression made it clear there was no room for discussion. So in the end, the waiter tucked the envelope away with trembling hands

Chapter 29

Back in the hall, Evelyn was surrounded by old schoolfellows, chatting and laughing. The vibe was so alive that it was like they were back in college again

Clarissa, sitting off to the side, glanced at the time and wondered, That stuff should’ve kicked in by now. Why the hell does Evelyn still look totally fine? Something’s not right.’

When she felt confused about that, she started to notice something strangeher own body was heating up. Her blood felt like it was bubbling under her skin

She turned to glare at Evelyn, her eyes filled with venom

Clarrisa didn’t understand how the drug ended up in her milk

She cursed inwardly, That damn waiter. I shouldn’t have trusted him.‘

She became tense, her eyes darting around for Adrian. She was barely a few weeks pregnant, and she had no idea what effect it could have on the baby

Clarissa placed a hand over her belly, her mind racing. This kid is my ticket into the high life. I can’t let anything bad happen.‘

But the heat in her body was spiraling fast, and everything inside her screamed for release. She had to fix this now, or that burning pressure inside would rip her apart

Her eyes were full of rage and desperation as she fumbled to dial Adrian’s number

Ady, I don’t feel right. Where are you?she whimpered into the phone, her voice weak and slurred

Hearing the clear distress in her tone, Adrian immediately scanned the hall. The second he spotted Clarrisa, he excused himself and rushed across the room

Claire? What’s wrong?he asked
