Clarissa’s face was unnaturally red, and her breathing was quick and shallow. She looked like she was barely holding it together.
Adrian leaned in to ask how she was doing, looking clearly worried.
Clarissa, still at the very beginning of the drug’s effects, blinked innocently and said, “I don’t know what’s happening. I just had a glass of milk, and then I started feeling hot. Ady, I feel awful.”
As she spoke, she started tugging at her clothes and practically melted into Adrian’s arms.
Adrian’s eyes darkened. It was obvious that someone had drugged her.
The only person Adrian knew who had a grudge against Clarissa was Evelyn. He never thought jealousy could twist a woman into something so ugly. The Evelyn he used to know had never seemed so calculating. He almost couldn’t recognize her anymore.
“I’m taking you to the hospital,” he said, deciding that for the sake of the baby, it was better to be safe than
sorry.
“Ady, I really don’t feel good,” Clarissa whimpered, her hands starting to wander without restraint.
Adrian scooped her into his arms and made his way out. As he passed Evelyn, he shot her a glare full of disgust and warned, “I won’t let this go.”
Evelyn raised her brows, clearly confused, but she quickly brushed it off and turned back to talk with Helena.
“Does Clarissa ever take a break from the drama? Someone with a shred of dignity wouldn’t parade around like that after wrecking someone’s marriage,” Helena spat.
Just the thought of what Clarissa had done made Helena’s stomach turn.
Evelyn smiled, “There are always two sides to a story. If nothing else, she showed me exactly what kind of man Adrian really is. At least I got out before I wasted more time. Let her stir up whatever she wants. She’s just a clown.”
Evelyn didn’t spare Clarissa a second thought. She wasn’t interested in petty competition with her.
She’d rather spend her energy thinking about how to make money or grow her studio. In her world, men were unreliable, but money never let her down. Earning more money was her real security.
Helena looked at Evelyn in awe and held up a thumb. “You’re amazing. If I were you, I would’ve flown across the room and ripped that bitch’s hair out.”
Helena had always been the fiery type. Spoiled since birth, she was never one to hold back. She would never back down if anyone crossed her.
If Evelyn hadn’t kept her in check tonight, Clarissa probably wouldn’t have made it out in one piece.

The party continued smoothly, and soon, the event was winding down. Since Helena had been drinking, Evelyn drove them home.
On the way back, Helena’s phone kept blowing up. She stared at the group chat, her face turning red with fury.
Helena exploded, “Can you believe this crap? Smiling to your face one second, stabbing you in the back the next. A bunch of trash.”
She clenched her phone, furious, as if she could just reach through the screen, she’d wring a few necks.
Evelyn kept her eyes on the road and asked casually, “What now?”
“Back when you and Adrian got married, these same people were kissing up to you. Even at the party, they were chatting you up like nothing happened.
“And now? They’re saying things like ‘the class genius got cheated on,‘ and ‘the side chick took over the house. Acting like you couldn’t keep your man, like it’s your fault.”
Helena was fuming. Whatever buzz she’d had was gone now–burned up in pure rage. She scrolled through the chat and snapped, “They must be idiots. Can’t stand the idea of someone doing better than them.
“Some guys are being gross, cracking dirty jokes. Ugh. I swear, they’re all fake as hell. Adrian could control his fuckin‘ dick. What does that have to do with you?”
Evelyn was amused by how explicit Helena’s words were.
Unlike Helena’s fiery temper, Evelyn just replied calmly, “That’s human nature.”
