Chapter 15
LUCAN
“I’m no devil,” she grits her teeth at me.

As pretty as that sounds, I’d have to burst her fantasy bubble. To me, she simply doesn’t know yet and that’s my job, to show to her.
“One,” I count, staring at my phone.
All I need is to type her name and a short write up, “Allowed.” Underneath it.
I’ve kept the guys away from bullying her all these while because I know the nasty things guys in our school could do to bullied girls. And Deborah is not going to be one of their tests subjects, not under my watch.
But I also needed to show her who I was, that’s why I let Ariel and the girls do their thing with her. It was better and simpler that way.
“Two,” I count.
She shifts.
Good.
“Lucan-”
“No baby, it’s a yes or no.” I cock my head, “Pick.”
She takes a deep breath, “Do what you will. I’m not scared of you.”
My lips curves upwards.
As expected.
“Really?” I ask, “You are sure you won’t regret it? I gave you the chance.”
“You can’t scare me. There’s basically nothing you can do to me.” She walks towards me, “Besides, you have to take care of me. Your mom and your dad asked that of you afterall. I should be like a little sister to you….. right?”
She chuckles as she stares at me and I smile back in response.
“Of course.” I mutter.
Her smile falters a bit but it doesn’t disappear. I raise the phone and press send.
Her name in capital letters. Allowed written boldly underneath it.
“Goodnight, Deborah.” I say and walk out of the kitchen. Her eyes follows me but I don’t turn to look at her.

By tomorrow morning, she’ll agree with me that she made the wrong choice. That she choose…. the wrong
answer.
I stare at my watch as I wait in front of her house the next morning. The gate opens and she steps out in her uniform, her bag strapped behind her.
Her mom’s head peeks out from the gate, “Thank you so much for this, Lucan and….thank you for last night.”
I smile at her in response as I walk towards the car.
“Bora,” her mom calls and she walks back to meet her. They whisper something I don’t hear to each other and I can see their reactions both change to something sour.
Her mom snaps, “I’m warning-”
I close the door, silencing whatever they were saying. It’s impolite to listen to someone’s private conversation, especially when they have that expression on their faces.
A minute later and the door to the passenger seat opens, Bora slips in.
I blink, “What are you doing there?”
She glances at me, “I don’t want to sit with you. Isn’t that obvious?” She snaps.
“Sit back here or get out.” I grit.
She finds a way to always get on my nerves. It’s amusing sometimes but not now.
“No.” She says with her smart mouth and faces the front. I simply rest my back on the chair, staring at her.
She is quiet for a moment and then looks at the driver when she realizes that he doesn’t start the car.
“The car won’t start till you come back here, Deborah. The driver’s on my family’s paycheck.” I smirk at her.
She scoffs lightly before she opens the door and moves to the back seat, beside me.
“Exercising your power is where you find peace, isn’t it?”
She looks obviously annoyed and was letting it get the better part of her. Whatever her mom told her must have soiled her mood.
I don’t reply her. I stare at the town as we pass it and get to the school gate.
I sight Amber standing in front of one of the building, her back rests on the wall with her two minions beside her. I don’t know their names. Or I simply didn’t care,
Opposite her, the three smarties stands and a group of boys speak somewhere close to them.
Bora pushes the door open and all attention moves to her. There was going to be trouble this morning and

she doesn’t look in a good mood for all her that.
Is it pity? Or something else?
I am the one who put her in the spot afterall.

I grab my bag and fall in line beside her as she walks to our building, “Stay beside me, so no one would harass you.”
She halts and turns to me slowly, “You are worried?”
“About what?”
“You put me the list..so why are you acting nice now?” Her eyes turn sharp, “Get out of my face, Lucan Drayce.”
With that, she storms off.
“Lucan!” Amber screams and waves as she approaches me, “I’m glad you finally released her to the school.”
“I’m glad too.” I mutter, mostly absent–minded.
“By the way,” Amber bites her lips slowly, “why did she come out from your car?”
I run my eyes over her. Why did her skirt look so short? What was the school giving out nowadays? “My mother requested.”
“Why?”
“She and Deborah’s mom are friends.”
Amber chuckles, ” And you guys are enemies, isn’t that crazy?”
I turn to look at Amber with a cock of my brows, “Who says we are enemies?”
“Aren’t you-”
I chuckle, cutting her off, “Of course not, Amber. Deborah can never be my enemy.” My lips curve upwards, “I don’t stare at enemies the way I stare at her. But she doesn’t know yet.” The last sentence was a whisper. I click my tongue as I walk past Amber and into the building leading to my class.
“Lucan!” Amber screams behind him and stops at my front.
“What does it mean? If you stare at her….” She gulps, eyebrows moving, “the way you do.”
I flatten my lips, “I don’t know. Yet. But that’s what makes it interesting right? Finding out.”
Amber’s lips tremble and I think she is angry. Not that it is my business anyway.
“I did a background check on Deborah. I asked my uncle and he helped me.” She mutters.

I scoff lightly, “Why…would you do a background on her?”

“I wondered what made her so interesting. I don’t…know why she catches your attention so easily.” Amber replies.
My jaw clenches.
“And do
you know what I found?” She steps closer to me. “Today makes it five years…. since her dad went missing. It’s a freaking anniversary.”
