Chapter 19

“She did what?” Azmaveth thundered, his voice echoing across the marble walls of his interior palace. 

“She is not just requesting, she is demanding your presence in her chambers,” one of the guards declared with his head lowered. he didn’t dare raise it just in case the emperor would vex and kill him. “The other guards and maids in the area heard it.” 

Azmaveth squeezed his hands against his armrest, wondering what to do with her now, and pardoning her consistently would make the elders believe he is now weak, and they might be forced to use their own methods to take her out, the same way someone amidst them had been sending assassins to kill him. 

He needed to do something to restore his respect and then make sure no one touches her. 

Calling another court meeting two consecutive times in less than three days isn’t something to be regarded with light hands. 

“Guards,” He ordered stiffly, and the two stationed guards standing close to the wall moved according to his command. “Drag the princess here.” 

“Yes, Your Majesty.” They chorused as they went on their way, just as soon as they left, the doors burst open and some of the council members strode in, they had murderous looks on their faces as they strolled inside. 

“Your Majesty,” They greeted, and Azmaveth gritted his teeth together in frustration. 

“What brings you here without any prior notice?” He queried, and Azarok stepped forward, a look of dissatisfaction on his face. 

“It is the talk of the palace…” He started, “That the human girl has demanded to see the emperor and that he come to her. She even declared that in her stay in this palace, His Majesty would be the one to seek after her.” 

“Let us kill her and serve her remains to the birds of the air,” Erebus suggested. “Her insubordination has brought about a division amongst the workers in the palace. Rumors spread like wildfire, my lord, and at the slightest ignition, you would be known as a weak king who is being controlled by a lowly human female.” 

“I am glad members of the council are so concerned for me.” He muttered, tapping the claw rings against the armrest of the table. 

“Why shouldn’t we? His majesty personally hand–picked up for this sole purpose,” Azarok continued, but there was someone who was still unsatisfied. 

“Your majesty, I still believe that death is too much of a penalty for her,” Draven muttered, and then all evil eyes turned towards him. 

“Shame on you, Draven.” Sarkan snapped. “The witch ordered you to summon the emperor to her, and you didn’t think of beheading her at the spot!?” 

“We should strip you of your position for that!” Demanded Draken with fire in his eyes. “Or even have you been caned?” 

“Please listen to what I have to say.” He pleaded, and then the emperor raised a finger, suggesting that he carry

“Then what?” Azarok snapped, his red eyes calculating, and Erevan bit down on his lips, arguing with his uncle for the second time in the meeting might cost him. So this time around, he was hoping Draven was strong enough to outsmart these old owls. 

“She had mentioned the emperor had promised to court her in her traditional way,” He mustered, and then turned towards the king. “Sire, forgive me for I should ask if this is true.” 

Azmaveth smirked slightly, he could figure out where this was going? And all of a sudden, he was interested in this boy. 

He seemed intelligent. 

“Yes, it is indeed true.” He confessed with a small smile, and the council members each shared a disappointed glance, a little frustrated as they might not get what they wanted. 

Which was the death of the human girl. 

“I am afraid to say that if the emperor had agreed to court her according to her tradition and customs, then we have no right to condemn her to death.” He was oddly fluent today, and somewhat confident. It seems like he understood the reason the emperor had appointed him, it wasn’t to make him be the girl’s personal maid but because of instances like this. 

“And why do you know so much?” 

“Because the emperor had appointed me to be in charge of the princess’s welfare.” He confessed. “And if his majesty was displeased, he would have killed her long before this council started.” 

“Ugh!” They heard a whimper from the doorway. “Let me go!” 

The two guards the emperor had ordered to go get the princess were back in the courtroom, they held her each arms in one of their hands, and they grip were like vices–difficult to break. 

Natalia’s bloodshot eyes glared in the direction of the council members before her eyes trailed up to meet the 

emperor. 

“What are you doing?” her voice breaking as she queried him. “Have you truly brought me here to be caned? Even after you promised to give me a choice?” 

“Human, whenever you are in court in the presence of the emperor, you are to lower your head,” Sarkan muttered with clear disgust written on his face. 

“I will never lower my head for cowards-” before the rest of the words could roll off her tongue, the emperor raised his index fingers, and there was a loud reverberation in the room, everyone dropped to their knees, the pressure that pressed against them was strong enough to break their bones. 

Natalia felt as if air had been knocked out of her lungs. As he fell to the ground, she shut her eyes tightly, trying to get the mind–boggling noise that invaded her head out, but it was close to impossible. 

The rest of the dragon was suffering from the same impact, but Natalia seemed to feel it more, as she was the

weakest. And in almost an instant, the noise was gone, Natalia felt her body fall to the ground, and dry coughs escaped her, her body quivered from the aftermath, and she felt a thick liquid stream out of her ears. 

She reached for it, and she almost gagged when her eyes came into contact with the thick red liquid.
