Chapter 20
/-Selene-/
I stood right there, yet he kept screaming my name until he passed out.
I couldn’t tell if it was the concoction this time or if it was my hand.
Hours later, he opened his eyes and refused that we call the healer.

Though I wasn’t sure, I saw his eyelid move before it returned to the normal way it had always been.
I waited for the guards to return me back to the prison, but none of them came close to me until Thorne spoke.
“You can continue staying as a maid here,” he muttered.
“She is no maid!” Kaelen fired.
“You heard the priestess, didn’t you? She is our mate, and we need to mark her.”
I stiffened.
Not just me; the world stopped rotating.
What did he mean by that? Mate to them?
“Yes to whatever you are thinking,” Kaelen said with his eyes on me.
I looked away, wondering why the goddess had kept me for royalty.
“I demand to leave.” I bowed slightly and walked out without waiting for a response.
The moment I was out of sight, my mind drifted to Finn.
How was he feeling now?
It’s been hours since I left, and it will hurt him if I don’t come back at least to tell him I have been released.
I sneaked into the kitchen hoping to prepare something for him before any of those wide–mouthed maids walked in.
Luckily for me, the kitchen was empty.
In less than an hour, I was through and even packed it, but just as I made to sneak out, I heard someone crack
his throat.
I stood still for some seconds and then turned slowly to meet Kaelen’s gentle eyes.
“For the prison guy?” He said it so casually, like he knew beforehand.

There was no point in lying, so I nodded in response.
:
“How about me?” He whispered and began walking towards me.
“Yo….you?” I stuttered and walked backwards.

“Yes, me. “Have you thought about me all this while, or are you so concerned with your new friend that you forgot that there was someone out there who fought tooth and nail for your release, huh?”
I had hit the wall, so there was no other place to run to, but Kaelen didn’t stop; he kept walking towards me till we were inches apart.
“Thank you,” I muttered. “I appreciate you.”
“But you’ve never cooked for me,” he growled.
“Selene, listen, I meant what I said in Thorne’s chambers; you are our mate, my mate, and I am a jealous being. I will break anyone who dares try to steal a place in your heart.”
I swallowed hard.
Not because I was scared, but because the movement of his lips didn’t allow me to digest his warning.
“I will assign a few guards to go with you; come back immediately. I see no need for friendship between you two.”
I scoffed.
You would also choose my friends for me?”
“You can go,” he whispered very close to her ear and walked away.
I stood watching him walk away till he was out of sight, then I headed for the prison.

“It’s a good thing; I don’t know why I feel bad,” Finn said the moment I shared the news of my release with him.
We spoke for hours after he had eaten, and suddenly Finn said something that struck me.
“I suspect your Alpha’s Beta; he doesn’t look pure to me, he doesn’t act pure, and I feel a bad energy anytime he is around.”
I gasped in shock and asked him to lean closer.
It was the only opportunity I had to let go of that secret in my chest.
“I believe I can trust you,” I muttered first.
“Of course you can,” he responded quietly.

I exhaled deeply and then whispered.
“The last time the pack was ambushed by other rogue wolves, instead of fighting for the pack and securing it,
he killed one of us.”
“What!” Finn gasped as he used his hand to cover the scream that threatened to spill out of his mouth.
“Who else knows about this besides you?” He muttered.
“No one,” I answered quickly.
“That makes us three,” I heard Kaelen’s voice right behind me.
I turned quickly in fear and made to leave, but he blocked my path.
“You prefer you speak to someone you just met for days over me, right?”
He looked hurt, so I bowed my face in shame. I had no idea what to say or do.
“The beta was responsible, huh, and you hid it from me no matter how much I begged you, but you are spilling it to a stranger you do not know properly.”
I stood abruptly and bowed. I had no words in my mouth, though I knew I needed to defend myself.
“Leave,” he muttered.
I didn’t let him say it twice; I scurried away like a toddler caught stealing.
Kaelen didn’t come back immediately; it made me think about what he was saying or doing to Finn.
Moments later he returned to his chambers and summoned me.
“You are banned from going to the prison,” Kaelen said the moment I stepped into his room. I never could have believed that he could be that mean.
“I was only…”
“You will only speak when I ask you to!” He roared.
I flinched.
“The next time I see you there, I will have him flogged and tortured!”
I nodded in agreement, though I knew I would definitely go there the next day.
“Call the Beta for me,” he ordered, and I fell to my knees immediately.
“No, no, please, somehow he will be released and I will be doomed.”
He stared at me for some minutes and then muttered, “You can leave.”

I bowed slightly and walked away.
I heaved a deep sigh when I opened my room, but the moment I put on my light, I screamed in fear.
Elara was seated on my bed.
“How did you get here?” I muttered, anger rising in my chest.
“And what did you do to Thorne?” she fired.
