I shook my head in self–pity.

“You can’t do this, please. All I want for you to deliver is this ointment and this paper; it wouldn’t take more than three seconds of your time. He is bleeding; he might die. Think of him as your son and help me, please.”
The kitchen head narrowed her eyes and curled her lips in revulsion.
“I said what I said; whenever you are ready to do as I ordered, I will fulfil my own part of the deal. It’s so simple; why are you shivering? Go make yourself a fool so that the beta will remain clean.”
Why was the beta so important to her? I wondered.
‘Don’t do it, Ivy growled in my head.
I shook my head violently.
“Come on, I can’t do that. You know it’s a lie, please…..”
She hissed and pushed past me like I was invisible.
“You pitiful thing,” she muttered. “You might be dead before the moon turns.”
I stood there frozen.
What if the twins decide to kill me? How then will Finn survive?
I needed to give him the ointment through any means possible.
“I will do it!” I called to her retreating figure.
‘No! Ivy grumbled.
I need to help, I answered. ‘He is a nice person; you need to meet him. And I can handle myself, trust me.
The kitchen head stopped dead in her tracks and flashed me the deadliest smile I had ever seen.
“Good girl”
She stretched out her hand, signalling me to drop the ointment and paper in her hand, and I did just that. It would even be worse if I were caught with such ointment.
I took a deep breath and marched towards Thorne’s chambers.
I didn’t knock.
Well, I didn’t care; they could go to hell if they chose to.

Chapter 24
The room went silent the moment I walked in.
:
The beta stood in that same spot, but Elara had taken a seat close to Thorne.
Kaelen, on the other hand, stood staring daggers at the beta.
“Selene!” Kaelen called.
I fell to my knees immediately.
“Please, forgive me.”
Kaelen and Thorne shared a confused look, with Thorne almost blowing his cover.

“Send me back to prison,” I cried. “Yes, I lied; the beta was right. I seduced him and made all this up.”
Thorne flinched and readjusted on his chair.
Kaelen stared at me with an intensity that made me question my decision for a second.
“What are you saying?” Kaelen muttered in disbelief.
I pressed my palms together and bowed low till my forehead almost touched the floor.
“I’m sorry; I craved attention from where it was impossible. I was foolish, and now, I beg to be punished accordingly. Send me back to prison; I deserve it,” I cried.
“Stand up,” Kaelen growled, but I didn’t move. I feared for Finn’s life.
What scared me most was that he stayed alone; no one would even know he was dying, and even if they did, they wouldn’t help him because he had made them his enemy because of me.
“Don’t make me repeat myself. Get up,” Kaelen ordered calmly.
I didn’t move at all.
The worst should happen; I was ready for it.
I wondered why Elara and the beta had not said anything in response,
They should be jubilating that I had painted them as trustworthy; instead, they had this confused look on their faces.
Thorne hadn’t spoken yet; he kept tilting his head.
I knew he was taking in Elara’s reaction and the beta’s reaction.
Kaelen took a few steps towards me and grabbed me by my arm, hauling me to my feet.
“That’s enough drama for the day.”

He dragged me out of Thorne’s chamber before I could say anything.
I struggled in his grip and continued shouting.
“Send me to prison, please. Give me my punishment already.”

Kaelen dragged me all the way to his chamber and shoved me inside like I was an empty plastic bucket.
The door slammed behind us, and Kealen grabbed me by my wrist again.
“Why are you lying?”
I looked up in surprise.
He knew.
“You looked so terrified when you said that nonsense now. Besides, why are you so interested in going back to prison?”
I looked away.
I wanted to explain, but what would I have said? That I lied because someone refused to deliver ointment to the man he nearly killed?
Or that if I didn’t lie, Finn might bleed to death?
“Selene!” Kaelen roared as though I had committed the worst crime in the world.
“Who the fuck are they protecting?”
“I swear I am not…..”
“Shut up!” He slammed his hand against the wall beside my head, and I let out a soft whimper.
“Don’t you fucking lie to me again. You think I wouldn’t know? You want to help Finn, don’t you? You want to help him clean his wounds, right?”
I shivered in fear, yet I didn’t say a word.
“If truly you lied because of the prisoner, you know I will kill him.” Kaelen’s voice was calm. Too calm
“I own you!” He shook my shoulder. “No one dares touch you in ways meant for me alone. Pray Selene, pray I don’t find out your motive in wanting to go back to prison, or else I will make him bleed, and I will make you
watch!”
My eyes widened in horror while my heart pounded violently that I thought he could hear it too.
“You are quite an actress, a selfless one at that. Well, you are not going back to prison, not for any reason in this world.”
I didn’t know what to feel. Relief? Or confusion? Or even more fear? The only consolation I had was that I had

given the kitchen head the ointment already; I hoped that she had delivered it.
