The beta grunted something that held no meaning to me and walked back to the position he had stood all this time.
Finn began speaking. His voice was low though, but it was firm.
The whole room went silent immediately so that they could all hear what he had to say.
“I didn’t take the mace,” he finally voiced.
Selene clutched her chest and heaved a deep sigh of relief.
“Neither did Selene give anything to me.”
Again, murmurs swept through the council hall, but I held up my hand to silence them.
“Continue,” I ordered Finn who seemed to have suddenly gone quiet.
He spat out blood, then raised his head.
“Minutes after Selene left, a guard came in, it seemed as though whoever they were had this all planned. The guard came in with the mace and asked me to make that confession. I refused, but he told me he would poison Selene if I didn’t. He told me about her routine, which was true, I had no choice but to make the confession, since he also threatened to report her for coming to the prison again.”
“Finn,” a whimper escaped Selene’s lips
“Who is this guard?” Thorne asked. “Has he no name?”
“No,” he shook his head. “I don’t know him by name, and he is not here; I haven’t seen him since this trial began.”
Finn answered lowering his head again.
“Bring every goddamned guard in this fortress and line them up, now!” Thorne barked the order.
Guards rushed out immediately.
Few elders shifted uncomfortably in their chairs, while other members whispered, and the

hall became chaotic.

I turned to look at Selene, who was more concerned with Finn, her lips trembled as she fought back whatever it was that brewed in her heart.
I walked towards her and held out my hand for her.
I suddenly felt pity for her, and guilty that I had not believed her the first time.
“Let me help you up,” I whispered.
She didn’t even spare a second to stare at me; she just pulled her arm away before I could touch it.
That cold movement of hers hit me like a blow on a battlefield.
“Selene,” I whispered. “I’m Sorry, allow me to help you.”
“You could have at least trusted me,” she whispered and pulled back more.
My chest rose heavily and fell just as quickly as it rose, my ego and pride completely trampled
- on.
I stepped back slowly, till I was back to the position I had initially.
Minutes later, all the guards of the royal house were lined up in rows before Finn.
He limped as he walked through the rows, inspecting each guard.
Thorne had ordered that a guard stay close to him in case he fell.
I followed, watching closely, while his eyes flicked from face to face. All the while, Selene watched him like her heart was on the line.
My whole instincts told me something was wrong, but before I could figure out what it was, it happened.
A sharp whistle split the air, and something whizzed through the crowd and hit Finn
the neck.
He held his neck immediately and staggered backwards.
A thin black pin jutted from the side of his throat and blood followed afterwards.
Selene’s scream filled the air
“FINN! NO!”

She ran to him faster than any of us could move and caught him before he could collapse wrapping her body around his limp body.
“Finn, no, no, don’t, please help!” She cried.
My eyes darted to the crowd, I needed to see where that pin had come from.
“Healers!” Thorne shouted and two of them rushed from the back and headed to Finn.
Just then, a young man tried to slip out of the crowd, but my eyes caught him in time.
“Get him!” I pointed in his direction and ran towards him; other guards followed.
He was fast, but we were faster.
Just when the intruder knew he was being cornered, he brought out a pin and stabbed himself in the neck quickly.
“No!” I stretched my hand, but it was too late.
He clutched his neck in pain and fell slowly to the ground, whilst foaming and bleeding profusely from his mouth.
Did he just kill himself? I thought
With a poisoned pin?
“Lock up his body for inspection,” I ordered my men and went back into the hall.
There, the healers tried all they could to stop the poison from spreading to his vital organs.
Blood foamed slightly from Finn’s mouth and I couldn’t help but be amazed by what had just happened.
Fin raised his hand to point at someone, but they trembled so badly that we didn’t know the exact person he was pointing at.
I clenched my jaw.
Finn was being silenced.
Whoever this person was, had carefully planned this.
He or she even had loyal people who were ready to die if caught.
I turned and marched straight to the Beta, shoving a few guards aside.

“You!” I growled and held him by his shirt.
“You must have something to say. How did that picture get to you? How did recording?”
The Beta’s eyes
widened.
“What are you saying, I…..”
I raised him and slammed him against one of the pillars.
“Who the fuck sent or gave you that recording?”
“Anonymous,” the beta choked.
“I swear.”
“You mother fucking liar!” I pressed my arm harder into his throat.
“Point out that guard who did this, or wait, it was you?”
The crowd gasped.
“No, I swear, I got this from an anonymous source.”
“You’ve gone the extra length, do you know what the mace signifies?”
I roared.
“Believe me Alpha, these rogues aren’t to be trusted. Finn might be lying.”

The Beta’s breath hitched. “What mask?”
“The one you have on now!” I snarled, ready to tear it down if he didn’t cooperate,
