I didn’t know where I learnt that, but I didn’t flinch when the Beta did all that to get my reaction, but to be honest, if he had lingered for an extra few minutes, I would have blinked.
Good thing his impatience helped me.
I walked into the healer’s room and met Finn lying as though he were asleep.
The same Finn I had seen with the beta minute ago.
I shook
my head and stepped into the room where Selene was attended to, then shut the door quietly behind me.
A sly grin curled on my lips as I laughed softly.
“Stupid fool!” I whispered more to my hearing only.
How dare he wave a knife before my eyes?
And even had the guts to think I didn’t see him.
That was sheer stupidity.
My mouth twitched to tell Kaelen, but not with the healers inside there.
None of them could be trusted, either.
I stared at Selene, who lay still on the bed like a dead flower.
She was dying, the poison had spread faster in her body. Her veins were dark coloured now, and so was her skin.
The way she breathed was worse.
My wolf growled inside of me, and for the first time, I felt pity towards her.
Kaelen knelt beside her.
His hand trembled on her shoulder, and his eyes were red–rimmed.
He had cried out his heart and I knew guilt was eating him up.
“I messed up man,” he muttered when I touched his shoulder.

“I shouldn’t have left them alone, I shouldn’t have doubted her the first time. Can you imagine, going such extra length as sucking out the poison with her mouth Why would she do such a thing?” Kaelen’s eyes clouded again.
I didn’t know how to comfort him
I didn’t know the words to use, so I just rested my hand on his shoulder.
Soon the eldest healer stood up.
“We’ve done all we can, we need to hold on till dawn. She must not be moved, because if her pulse stops again, we might lose her.”
Kaelen and I nodded in unison, and each of the healers slipped out of the room and retired to their respective chambers.
It was just me and Kaelen now.
“Does she love him? Because how on earth did they turn to such tight friends, you shouldn’t have thrown her to prison, I warned you.” Kaelen further lamented.
I rolled my eyes
“Please don’t shift the blame to me, I am not a seer.”
Kaelen stood up and walked to the only window in the room.
“I swear on my title, if I find out the guard who did this, I will make sure he regrets his very existence,” Kaelen threatened
I heaved a deep sigh and drew closer to him.
For all I know, that Finn might be listening to our conversation.
I leaned into him and whispered.
“You already know who plotted this, and so do I.”
Kaelen turned sharply.
“What? Who? The Beta?”
I nodded.
“Perfect guess. On my way here, I saw him discussing with that Finn, when he saw me, he waved a knife in my face to confirm if I could see or not, but I passed his dumb test.”

Kaelen got enraged.
“You mean the prisoner is working for him too?”
“Yeah,” I gave a one–word response.
“No!” Kaelen rose to his feet. “I will send him to his maker now!”
“Kaelen no,” I blocked him with my body.

“You can’t do that now, my blindness is our greatest weapon now, we still need to be sure about a whole lot of things, let’s not throw it away in a fit of emotion. Who knows, Finn might also be pretending to the Beta.”
Kaelen’s body shook violently, but I knew he was listening.
“The members of the scarlet pack are cunning, and since we have more than one mole in our midst, we have to be calm until we have fished them all out; only then can we fight back and win. I know Aiden, he is a snake, and he doesn’t mind sending more members here, so long as he masters our routine. So while they play their game, we play ours.”
Kaelen nodded.
“Understood.”
“Good,” I muttered.
“Now go call Finn for me.”
“What? Why?” Kaelen’s eyes widened in confusion.
“Just go.”
Kaelen steadied his breath before walking away.
Minutes later he stepped in with Finn behind him.
Veins ran through Kaelen’s head, I knew what it meant.
He was restraining himself with the whole strength he had left; one wrong move from Finn and Kaelen would have his head rolling on the ground.
The moment Finn’s eyes landed on Selene’s still body, a tear slipped down his cheek.
Now I couldn’t tell if that was genuine or not.
I cleared my throat and began speaking.

“Finn, tomorrow morning, I want you to show Kaelen the guard that did that.”
He swallowed hard, then muttered with a shaky voice.
“I think the poison did something to my brain, I barely remember anything.”
Kaelen folded his fist, but I pinched him discreetly.
“I see,” I replied to Finn.
“Do you want different healers?”
“No, no,” Finn replied.
“I believe with time, the memories will come back.”
I nodded.

“I appreciate your courage young or old man. You will no longer be a prisoner, but a guard. This is the only way I can say thank you for going the extra length in protecting Selene.”
Kaelen’s jaw slacked as he stared at me as though I had lost my freaking mind.
Finn knelt immediately and bowed with his head touching the ground like I was god.
“Thank you so much. I will serve with sincerity of heart, and protect this place like it’s mine,” Finn declared.
“Good. Go get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow, the beta will introduce you to other guards.”
“Thank you so much,” he whispered again and walked away, though not after sparing Selene one last look.
When we were sure he was out of earshot, Kaelen exploded.
“Was that part of the plan too?”
“Of course,” I muttered. “Let’s start by bringing them closer.”
