Chapter 39

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.
Something was definitely off, offering me the position of a guard that easily?
Has he forgotten that I am a member of the Scarlet Pack?
I felt tears cloud my vision when I remembered how Selene looked minutes ago

I wasn’t sure she would survive it, and if she doesn’t, I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself.
“That bastard!” I grunted. “How dare he refer to my missing sister?”
I lay gently on the mat prepared for me and closed my eyes.
But sleep seemed so far away.
The thought of my little sister filled
my
mind.
I knew the beta was holding her captive somewhere, and that was the only reason he still my loyalty.
By morning, a guard woke me up, offering me a new set of clothes and shoes
He really did mean it! I thought to myself.
Hours later, we were at the assembly of he guards.
The Beta’s eyes pooped out when he saw me in that uniform.
“I decided to reward him,” Thorne muttered. “From today, he becomes one of us.”
The guards bowed in response while the Beta stared at me with hatred.
I walked to the Beta as the highest ranked and waited to be introduced.
“What are you doing?” He muttered as I got close.
“I didn’t know he would offer me such a position,” I whispered to him.
“But you accepted after he did!” The Beta was totally not having it.
“Why can’t I hear your voice? Is there a problem?” Thorne growled.

The Beta cleared his throat and began the introduction.
Moments later Thorne walked away, leaving us guards alone.

Of course, they would discriminate; no member of RavenCrest trusts a member of Scarlet.
One by one the guards returned to their duty post till I was left with the Beta.
“Come with me,” he muttered and headed in the opposite direction, to his chambers, maybe.
Like a sacrificial lamb, I followed, though my instincts were as sharp as a two–edged sword.
I was right.
The beta took me to his chambers and slammed you door.
“You bastard!” He grabbed me by my neck.
“What are you doing?”
“I swear on my life, I know nothing about this, I couldn’t say no, it was fast,” I pleaded.
“So how do we work now? Huh? Do you not know your every move will be monitored here?” He snarled.
I bowed my head, as though I regretted my decision, when in real life I was so happy to find my way into the royal house.
I had promised my sister that I would kill him after I found her, and that’s all I had in mind.
Do what he says, gain his trust, find my sister, and kill him.
“You know what?” He ran his hand through his hair.
“Since you are here already, you will help me do my dirty jobs, at least be useful.”
I arched an eyebrow.
“What job?”
He inhaled deeply and leaned in.
“The real Beta, his sister, is here; she knows I’m a fake. You should kill her; I can’t handle Kaelen and still handle her.”
My hand shook slightly.

“How do I identify her?”

“She’s the newest maid here, blonde hair, skinny and tall. She always has a black tie on her hair, I think it’s a gift her brother gave her,” he described.
I swallowed hard.
“Consider it done.”
“One more thing,” he muttered and raised a finger.
“Selene.”
My eyes widened.
Why was he calling her?
“I don’t know how possible or quick you can get it done, but I want you to end her as well.”
My breath hitched.
But I couldn’t let him see that his instructions troubled me.
“Kaelen is quick, Thorne is acting suspicious, something is definitely going on, and I need Selene out of the way by any means possible. Only then can Elara have her way and give me what I want. It’s not going to be an easy one, killing her, but there should be progress; you are her trusted friend.”
I nodded, still keeping my breath in check.
“You can get lost. Report in a few hours.”
I nodded again and rushed out.
There at the door, stood the girl he just described to me,
Blonde hair and the like.
She stood by the door smiling.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” I muttered
“You must be the new guard,” she answered.
“And you must be the new maid,” I fired.
“Oh, I take that as a compliment,” she covered her mouth with her hand.

“He must have told you about me, that’s the only thing that could bring you into his room this odd hour.”
I looked around sharply to be sure no one was eavesdropping on our conversation, then drew closer to her.
“I do not understand a word of what you said,” I lied.
“Very well then, I will explain better. I’m sure that the masked man in there must have told
that I am the sister of the beta whom he killed. In other words, you might have been you asked to kill me. But here is a little warning, you have no business with us or this, so deviate from doing anything to harm me, because I have no heart!”
Her eyes changed that instant and she walked away.
I stood at the entrance frozen.
If killing Selene was hard, then killing her might be impossible, she is strange.
“Creepy,” I muttered and walked away, not after debating whether to inform the Beta of what I had seen or not.
My next location was the healer’s tent, where Selene was receiving treatment.
I walked briskly to avoid being called by another guard, unfortunately for me, the tent was heavily guarded.
From the window, I could see Kaelen’s cap, he truly did care for her.
“I’m here to see Selene,” I muttered to a guard who blocked my path.
He shook his head in response without saying a word.
“She’s
my friend, I just want to check on her,” I muttered.
He shook his head again, then Kaelen spoke from inside.
“Let him in.”
I bowed deeply in reverence when I entered the room and turned to face Selene.
My eyes clouded.
I knew I couldn’t harm her, not after seeing how pure her heart was.
Worse still, I was no longer pretending to be attracted to her.

I was deeply attracted to her, and even got jealous whenever her men were around her.
Her breathing was steady now.
Her skin was clear.
I knew her body would fight that poison, she was not just any wolf.
“She’s coming along,” I muttered and sniffed back the tears.
Kaelen stared at me for a few seconds, then looked away.
I couldn’t tell what was going through his mind, but whatever it was, it was terrible.
“She will live,” he muttered and returned his gaze to her body.
“You can leave now, I am not comfortable sharing the same air as you.”
