My heart dropped into my stomach when she talked about the Scarlet Pack requesting a replacement.
How come I didn’t hear of that? And when did Aiden send such a message? Who did he send?
Because I knew I was the only free guard he could use, does it mean that there were even more members of the Scarlet Pack in the royal house?
But then, the Alphas were disgusting! How dare they?
I held Selene’s hand as we crept past the last rows of trees outside the northern wall.
It seemed the moon goddess was on our side.
The moon shone faintly wherever we were not under a shade, but shone brightly when we crept through
trees.
We were almost at the gate when we noticed sharp, heavy footsteps.
“Stop,” I whispered and held Selene close to me.
She froze against me. I didn’t need to tell her why, she had seen him too.
It was the Beta, walking towards us, maybe heading to the prayer ground.
“What is he doing here?” Selene whispered and tightened her grip on my hand.
I didn’t respond. If I had spoken right then, he would have sensed that someone was here.
He had the sharpest instincts I had ever known.
He walked with intention, no way he was on duty like that.
He was scanning the area, along with that mask on his face as usual.
Then it dawned on me that he must be looking for me.
He must need a report for the people he asked me to kill.
My eyes stayed locked on him and I quietly placed a finger on my lips, signalling Selene to keep mute.
She didn’t move.
I reached for my dagger sheathed at my side. I was prepared to die if he dared harm Selene under my watch.
The Beta paused, about ten to twelve feet from us.

I swear, my heart stopped.
I could hear the sound of my heart pounding violently against my ribs, and I could swear that I could hear Selene’s own too.
“Where the fuck did he go?” The beta muttered and turned.
We waited until his body and even his shadow were covered whole by the trees and darkness.
I exhaled deeply.
“Let’s go.”
I took her hand in mine again and continued moving.
We finally reached the gate, lo and behold, the guards there seemed bewitched.
They were all still sleeping!
Selene stopped.
“Thank you,” she muttered.
“This is where you turn back.”
I grabbed her arm.
“Selene no, I can’t. I won’t let you walk in the wild alone. Wherever it is you are going, I’m going to make sure you are safe.”
I meant those words.
She had saved my life countless times, it was only right that I led her to safety.
“No,” Selene whispered. “You have to go, you just won Thorne’s heart recently, don’t do something suspicious. You’ve risked too much already, and trust me I can take care of myself”
“I don’t care,” I snapped.
“I don’t fucking care if I have won Thorne’s heart or not. It’s dangerous out there and I need to see you through, that’s all.”
“I can handle myself, I promise you,” she said, shaking.
“Selene….”
“Please,” she interrupted, tears gathering in her eyes.
“Don’t make this harder than it is, you’ve done enough, go back, you have your own life to figure out.”
I felt pain in my heart.

Chapter 46
The same pain I felt the day we began to look for my sister.
It felt as though she might never return.
I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around her.
She wrapped her hand around me too, sobbing into my chest.
We stood there locked in an embrace I knew might be the last.

“Allow me to help, please. I am scared. What if you meet rogues on the way? What if you get lost in the woods? What if something happens to you? How would I know? Where do you have in mind to go? Who do you know? What will you eat? How will you survive?” I dumped all these questions on her because that was really how I felt at that time.
“Which do you want me to answer first?” Selene whispered.
“You are pregnant, Selene. I’m sorry I can’t, even if it means losing my position and returning to prison, so be it. My heart is heavy, don’t do this.”
My lips quivered.
My hands shook.
In fact, my whole body trembled.
The only reason I was helping her escape was that there was no way she would survive in my pack. They will keep her for healing, and kill her the instant she refuses to do their bidding.
“Finn,” she rubbed my back.
“If the goddess is willing, I will come back, safe and sound. If she’s not, then maybe this is my fate. Stop worrying about me, it’s hurting me even more.”
“Promise me something,” I whispered into her hair.
“Promise that whenever you are safe, you will let me know, please promise me this isn’t the last time I will see you.”
She shook violently, then, with her cracked voice, muttered.
“I promise.”
I cried.
I let the tears drop in torrents.
The last time I cried like this was when my sister was declared missing.
I didn’t want to let go until I heard the same footsteps from earlier.

“Go,” Selene pushed me. “If they find us here, they will kill us both. Please go.”
I clenched my fists, placed a kiss on her forehead and turned.
I walked back to the royal house with shaky legs and a broken heart.
But just as I took the turn leading to the tower, I froze.
Standing before me was the beta looking quite suspicious.
I didn’t have the time to lie or duck, he had already seen me.
“Well, well, well, see who we have here, where are you coming from? I’ve been looking for you. And,” he paused and raised his hand in warning. “Don’t you dare lie to me, I will find out.”
