Chapter 42
/-Selene-/
I didn’t stop to think of what Kaelen would say if he noticed I was no longer in my room.
Worse still, if he noticed I was with the same Finn!
But as I walked down the hall, I couldn’t care about anything else.
I just needed to hear something that meant that the priestess was wrong.

Just as I turned towards the west wing where the guards usually trained, I nearly bumped into a maid standing stiffly in the middle of the hallway.
She was probably waiting for me.
“Hey,” she called hurriedly. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
It was the new maid.
Her eyes seemed unusually sharp, too sharp for a maid.
How did she know I would walk that way, and why was she looking for me? It was the first time a maid had
said that.
“You are Selene right?” She said softly, but it didn’t sound like a question, it sounded like she already knew.
I nodded slowly.
“Yes, I am, and who are you?” I asked softly, taking wary steps backwards.
“My name is Minel,” she replied. “I was at the hearing. The one about the missing mace.”
I swallowed hard.
“Yes, what about that?”
I didn’t expect the question, but I couldn’t allow her to see the shame and the look of self–pity on my face.
“I’m Sorry about that,” she whispered. “I didn’t expect such a scene, but I knew from the onset that you were innocent. The people here sucks.”
“What?” I whispered.
I hadn’t expected such words. She had taken me off guard completely.
An apology? From someone in the royal house?
It was weird.

Chapter 42
“You are not saying anything,” she muttered, jolting me back to reality.
“Oh!” I rubbed my hand on my eyes.
“Sorry, I zoned out.”
“Thank you,” I whispered softly.
“But why are you saying this now?”
She cleared her throat and then looked around the hallway quickly.
“I have something to tell you, it’s about the Beta.”
I squinted my eyes.
That snake!
“Come with me, it’s not something we can talk about here is it?”
“No,” she answered.
I turned and started walking back to my chamber, while she walked by my side in silence.
But the silence didn’t last long, Elara was at it again.
She stood in my path and folded her arms

“Elara move,” I muttered under my breath. She had a smug look on her face and her eyes narrowed at the sight of me and Minel together.
“It sure doesn’t sound like Kaelen, so I won’t move,” she answered.
I bit my lower lip because I knew I was about to do something dramatic.
“Well, well, well,” Elara spat, eyeing Minel before turning her full attention to me.
“You think you look better now? You are even walking about with your fellow maids?”
“Elara, I won’t say it again. Get out of my way!”
Ivy growled inside me..
She hated the very presence of Elara, and so do I.
Instead of moving, Elara leaned in closer and did something I never imagined she would ever do.
She grabbed my arm quickly and brought out a wiper.
Wiping and cleaning my arms as hard as she could.

I stared at her, an amused grin playing on my face.

“It’s not a concealer? What then is this? Why is this smooth? Did you use some forbidden product or magic, huh?”
1 yanked my arm out of her grip and hissed.
“This is healing Elara. Yes, something good will definitely come out of it, now fuck off!”
She scowled and turned to Minel.
“And you, who gave you the right to walk about aimlessly? And to think it’s with a cursed being, do you want to be cursed yourself?”
Minel didn’t flinch.
“I wasn’t introduced to you as a member of the royal house. Besides, kindness doesn’t require permission.”
My eyes widened.
Finally one honest person in the royal house.
Elara flared with anger.
“Are you insane? Do you know you I am your Luna to be?”
Minel answered calmly.
“From the little I’ve heard, Selene here is their mate.”
“Rejected mate!” Elara corrected.
I flinched.
I mean, it reminded me of the baby I was carrying.
A child to a rejected mate.
“Go back to your post this minute!” Elara snarled.
“No she won’t, she’s with me,” I answered.
“I see, you think because of your cheap magic you are better off than I am? I would deal with both of you and…..”
“Let’s go,” I whispered to Minel.
“Move and I will hit you!” Elara threatened.
But so bad, Minel wasn’t one of those maids who scurried away when they were shouted at.

“You both are maids, you will do what I say. You Selene, you shouldn’t forget your place because your back is no longer hunched like a beast and….”
Minel didn’t let her finish speaking, she held my hand and made to walk away, but Elara, being so furious, raised her hand to hit her, but she caught her hand mid–air and said something terrifying.
“The reason you are here, is the same as my reason, even worse! Don’t mix it because of the uniform I’m wearing,” Minel warned.
Elara stood frozen, and so did I.
“Is something wrong here?” A familiar voice asked.
I turned around to see Finn standing with his arms folded across his chest.
Minel shot him a deadly stare then whispered, “We should see some other time.”
“Why?” I asked quickly.
She stared at Finn in ways that even a newborn baby would know something was going on.
Then to my utter confusion, she walked away.
Just like that?
I stood staring at her retreating figure with my mouth slightly open.
“Why did she leave?” I muttered loudly.
She had just insisted on having something important to say to me, but what was so urgent that she had to walk away like that?
Elara let out a scoff and went after the maid.
I turned to Finn.
“I have been looking for you. I need to talk to you about something.”
Then he noticed my skin.
“Selene, the curse, it’s going gradually!” He said with his eyes wide open.
I held his hand.
“Come with me, I need clarity.”
