-Selene-/
“I will try, now stand,” I pulled her up gently.
“I can’t speak with either of the twins, it’s just us, but I will do my best.”
“Thank you.”
She turned to leave, but turned back immediately.
“I know you are close to the outcast guard, please…..”
“Outcast guard? Who is the outcast guard?” I furrowed my eyebrow in confusion.
“You mean Finn?”
“Yes. Don’t tell him about your plans, or anyone else, I don’t trust any of them.”
Her eyes shone with defiance and resentment. I could tell her mind was made up, and with or without my help, she would do anything to save her brother and expose the Beta.
I rested my hand on her shoulder.
“Don’t worry, I will keep it to myself.”
The moment she stepped out of my room, I shut the door behind her and rested my back on it, while my fingers trembled against the wood.
I stood there for minutes thinking about how unfair life was to me.
I missed my mother. I wish she were here; she left so soon and didn’t bother to check on her little girl.
I let out a shaky breath and walked to my bed as though my legs weren’t mine.
They wobbled, but I stood still.
Finally, my body fell into the soft covers of my bed, but there was nothing comforting about it.
If for anything, it only reminded me of things that were better left forgotten.
For minutes, I stared at the ceiling in silence.
I was hurt, betrayed, broken, but still ugly.
To think that Kaelen never meant all his actions or words made me feel really foolish.
My mind drifted to Minel.

I knew it!
I knew that behind that mask was a devil, a devil we didn’t know.

But I also knew that since I couldn’t speak to either Kaelen or Thorne, I would have to do something myself.
With that resolution, I lay on my bed and waited.
It was past midnight when I finally crept out of my room, the halls of the pack were as still as the oceans at midnight.
The stillness made every creaking floorboard sound like a shout. I walked on my toes, careful not to make a sound, while my heart pounded with every corner I turned.
My plan was simple.
Sneak into the beta’s chamber, go through the window and see his face.
Few guards were on duty, but they were all asleep.
I shook my head, supposing I was an enemy. Is this how they would have easily lost their lives?
I was just rounding the hallway that curved towards the west wing when I heard voices.
The same voices I had heard earlier that day that had broken my heart.
I stopped, debating whether to continue with my mission or listen to them.
Curiosity got the better of me and I leaned against the wall and listened.
One thing I didn’t understand was why they were not in their chambers.
Thorne was speaking now.
“I see absolutely no reason why we can’t send her. We are not surrendering, we are buying time. Before they notice who we’ve sent, and begin to plan the fight, we should have gone far ahead with our plans and taken them by surprise.”
Kaelen kept mute for some time then muttered.
“Selene is a woman, dropping her as a replacement to the scarlet pack doesn’t make sense to me.”
Was it me?
Were they talking about my own Selene?
“You seem too far gone in this, Kaelen“, Thorne continued.
“She will be disguised as a man to buy us time. Thankfully, her ugliness will serve a purpose here because they wouldn’t know she’s a lady until the die minute.”

“You can’t be serious,” Kaelen snapped. “She’s our mate for crying out loud! How do we just hand her over like some token? Besides, what makes you think she will agree to that after hearing what we said earlier today?”
“You think she has a choice?” Thorne asked.
“She is strong, I mean, her body fought a scarlet poison, all she has to do is heal someone from the pack and they won’t kill her when her cover is blown. She will be an asset to them, and after we’ve fought back, we can collect our lost property.”
I stumbled backwards.
I couldn’t wait to hear any more.
I turned on my heel and ran.
I didn’t care if I was loud.
I didn’t care if I got caught.
The only thing I knew was that if I spent one more minute in this cursed house, I would be nothing more than a bargaining chip.
I had to leave as soon as I could, and the only person who could help me was Finn.
I turned and headed to their quarters, hoping he was on duty that day.
Luckily for me, I found him exactly where I hoped he would be, by the northern tower, keeping night watch.
“Selene.” he called. He saw me first.
“Finn,” I said slowly with my shaky voice.
“What are you doing here by this time? What’s going on? Are you okay?”
He asked with genuine concern written boldly on his face.
I quickly grasped his arm.
“I need to leave. Now.”
“Leave? How? Why? To where?” His eyebrows knitted together as he split the endless questions.
“Just help me, Finn. Anywhere, help me leave the royal house, I can find my way.” My body trembled as I begged.
Finn grabbed me by my shoulders to help me relax for a bit.
“Hey relax, breathe in slowly. Now tell me what’s going on?”
“I am pregnant!” I split the word.

Finn looked stunned.
“Pregnant? How did you know that, when did you have sex that you are pregnant already?”
I began shivering again.

“The priestess confirmed it. I need to leave if it’s true, because I can’t be pushed to the Scarlet Pack if I have a baby growing inside of me. They will find out on time, and kill me and my baby.”
Finn’s eyes widened in horror.
“The scarlet pack?”
“Yeah. They are planning to send me as the replacement for the dead Scarlet Warrior. I….”
“No fucking way,” Finn froze.
“Kaelen too…”
“Both of them,” I answered before he asked.
“I’m begging you please, help me cross, I will find my way from there.”
His lips pressed into a thin line as he nodded. “Alright, come. Aren’t you packing anything? Clothes, food?”
“No, no,” I shook my head.
“I came with nothing, I have nothing and I will leave with nothing”
He took my hand.
“Let’s hope the moon goddess is on our side.”
I gripped his hand tighter and said a silent prayer as we walked towards the exit of the building.
