Chapter 48

I wished I could stay in Finn’s arms for the rest of the day, but I also knew that Finn couldn’t protect me no matter how much he tried. He was still a prisoner no matter the position Thorne had given him. 

My mind drifted to the night I first kissed Kaclen. 

How stupid of me to think I could find love with how I looked. 

How stupid of me to have fallen for such empty words. 

It was a windy evening. 

I had definitely chosen the wrong evening to run away. 

The wind howled like a ghost, tugging at my hair as I ran deeply into the woods. 

But one thing was sure, I wouldn’t stop until I was far away from the RavenCrest pack, even if it meant staying with humans. 

With practised precision, I shoved branches out of my way as I plunged deeper into the woods. 

Tears fell freely from my eyes blurring my vision, and from time to time, I had to stop to clean my face. 

I thought of Minel. 

She would be so heartbroken to find out that I had left after promising to help her. 

But what could I do? If not pray to the goddess that the beta be caught. 

As though the goddess were against me, the heavens opened and it began to rain. 

Angry and heavy downpour that clouded my vision the more. 

My clothes stuck to my body like wet parchment, and my boots? They were squelched in the mud, but it didn’t stop me. 

I took the next turn and continued running, though I had slowed down a little. 

I was tired, soaked to the bone. 

But I thought, what will become of me if I don’t keep running? 

Soon the twins will find out I’m missing, and before then, I hoped to be in a faraway land where they can’t find me. 

My body shook violently and I had to wrap my arms around myself.

I stumbled forward, now completely blinded by the curtain of water.

Before I could take the next turn, I heard a deep, bone–chilling growl behind me. 

I stiffened, yet mt teeth chattered. 

“No, not now,” I whispered, bending down and hiding behind a thick tree. 

I bit my teeth hard to stop the chattering noise it was making, then peeked through the space in the roots and caught a glimpse of the creature that made that sound. 

It was a huge wolf, with furs as dark as night itself. 

Its eyes glowed like Amber as it scanned the environment, sniffing the air like a hunter. 

I knew it had perceived my scent. 

Yet I hoped against all odds that the mixture of earth and rain would confuse it to change its direction. 

My heart pounded in my rib cage as though he had seen me already. 

I no longer remembered it was raining, because a threat way stronger than the rain was here. 

At that point, I wished I could become invincible. 

‘Ivy, I called my wolf. 

Thankfully, she was as alert as possible. 

‘We should fight, you have no time.’ 

‘No,‘ I shook my head. 

‘I can’t fight. Not in this state, and not against this scary monster.’ 

She said nothing, but I knew Ivy, I knew she was waiting for the perfect opportunity to claw out of my skin. 

I waited for minutes, willing the creature to disappear, yet it stayed, and kept sniffing. 

After long agonising minutes passed, there was silence. 

I peeked through the opening to check and noticed that it had

I waited for a few minutes and when I was sure the coast was clear, I slowly stood up with my trembling knees and continued my journey. 

No sooner had I taken five steps than a loud snarl erupted behind me again.

The creature never left, it waited and this time it had seen me. 

Ivy became restless, clawing inside me, but I knew this wasn’t something I could fight. 

My legs moved on their own and I took off into the woods again. 

The creature followed. 

Its growls echoed behind me as it gained ground fast. 

My legs screamed for mercy, so did my lungs, but I didn’t care 

No way I would die in the woods because I was trying to protect myself. 

But here was the main trouble. 

Something growled in front of me.

My legs stopped suddenly when I noticed another wolf, just as monstrous as the other step into my path. 

I was surrounded. One behind me and another right in front of me. 

I swallowed hard. 

Finn was right after all. 

I would have allowed him to help me leave the woods completely. 

At least, I didn’t have to face this alone. 

I turned to the side, trying to run, but the second wolf lunged forward and snapped its jaw a few inches from my face. 

I fell to the ground with a loud thud. 

From the corner of my eye, I could see the other wolf approaching. 

“No,” I whispered. 

“No way.” 

I couldn’t die like this 

Not after everything. 

I screamed at the top of my voice, but I didn’t think there was anybody there to help. 

But seems Ivy was excited. 

She clawed at my insides, and soon I felt that crack.

Pain erupted through my body as my bones twisted inside me. 

I screamed again 

Not for help against the wolves, but because of the pain that tore through me. 

Every nerve in my body burned. 

Then my arms began to contort 

My spine arched 

And fur began to sprout from my skin. 

Ivy was here 

“Ivy,” I gasped, though my voice sounded weird and scary. 

My fingers began to reshape into claws, and my sense of hearing and seeing intensified.

The pain that came with my transformation made me convulse, but when I fully transformed, I stood in awe of my wolf. 

She was huge. 

Both wolves moved backwards a little, but charged towards me at once.
