Chapter 50
/-Kaelen-/
After the conversation with Thorne, I felt restless.
A few hours after I retired to my chambers, I felt even worse.
I didn’t mean those words I said earlier, that was just the only way I could make Thorne keep her.

Standing alone in my room now, I couldn’t breathe, and each breath I managed to draw felt like smoke clinging to my lungs.
I paced my room.
Something was going on
But I couldn’t place my hand on what it was.
When the feeling became persistent, I knew it was Selene.
It seemed as though she was in a tight spot, but shame on me, I couldn’t move.
Guilt ate deep into me and all I could do was pray she was okay.
I remembered the horrible words I had said earlier and flinched at the thought of it.
How her eyes, when she stared at me, haunted me more than the first life I had taken in battle.
Now Thorne was here with another plan, and despite how terrible I felt it was, it was the safest plan.
I knew for sure they wouldn’t kill her when she heals one or two people.
After all, we will attack soon, and reclaim her, after which Thorne promised to mark her.
I made up my mind.
She would go
But I wouldn’t be there when they send her away.
I won’t be able to stare into her eyes.
I couldn’t sleep a wink that night, I tossed and turned, and soon it was morning.
The house buzzed with activities as usual.
Maid rushed in and out through different doors, but Selene was nowhere to be seen.
I shrugged my shoulders.

I knew she would be avoiding me, I deserved it.
But then, the whole morning passed and yet no sign of her.
Fear began to creep in slowly.
Thorne mindlinked just then
‘Come to my chambers, the meeting is about to start.
“Bastard!” I said openly. Always reading my mind.
I shut the mind link and headed for his chambers.

The moment I stepped in, I noticed two trusted pack council members were already seated. We exchanged pleasantries, and Thorne began to address us.
“The Scarlet Pack sent us a warning. Those idiots demand compensation for a life we didn’t take. They want war by any means possible and we are ready for it, but we will not fight blindly, which is why I have called us here this morning.”
I stared into the faces of the elderly men and I could see fear written on it.
They knew how horrible the scarlet pack was, and they must have heard about their alliance with the other pack.
Thorne continued.
“Those cursed beings gave us an ultimatum, they will attack if we don’t send them a warrior to replace the other.”
The room was as silent as a graveyard, so he continued.
“We have a little plan. Someone is willing to go for us.”
My head snapped.
Did Thorne just say willing?
“She can help us buy time while we strategise,” he added.
I wanted to scream or slam my head on the wall.
This just doesn’t feel right, but what could I do or even say? Thorne had always been the master planner.
“Maid!” Thorne called and the door opened slightly.
A maid walked in and bowed deeply.
“Get Selene!” Thorne ordered.

She nodded and scurried away.
My breathing became erratic as I waited for her
I braced for impact, ready to refuse if she refused too.
We waited for a long time.
Three minutes passed, then five, then ten, fifteen before the maid returned panting.
“I can’t find her,” she said while trying to catch her breath.
“What do you mean you can’t find her?” Thorne growled.
“She’s not in her room and she’s nowhere around the royal house.”
I rose to my feet immediately and stormed out of Thorne’s chamber.
I walked to her room to have a look myself, and true to the maid’s words, she was nowhere to be found.
Her room was untouched.
There was no sign of panic or struggle
In fact, the room was Intact as though she had just stepped out to urinate.
I rushed to the maid’s quarters.
“Where is Selene?” I asked the head of the kitchen.
She bowed quickly.
“I don’t know. I’ve not seen her since today.”
My stomach twisted.
But then, one person came to my mind immediately. That stupid prisoner, Finn!
I bolted to the guard’s quarters and found him near the tower talking to another guard.
I took quick long strides to him and before he could react, my hands were on his neck already and I had already slammed him into the nearest wall.
“Where is she?” I barked
“Who?” He asked trembling with fear.
“Don’t play games with me!” I screamed.
“Where the fuck is Selene?”
His eyes widened, then he choked out a response.
“I don’t know, I swear.”
“Liar!” I snarled and drew him closer.
“I will ask you one more time, where is Selene? You are the only friend she has here, where the fuck is she?”
Behind my fury, was fear, impatience and guilt.
For a moment, I felt she had left the pack because of those hurtful words I said earlier, but somehow, I didn’t want to attribute her absence to that; I needed someone else to take the blame, maybe that way I would feel
better.
“I swear, I don’t know,” Finn insisted.
I furrowed my eyebrows.
If Finn didn’t know, how did she leave?
Who helped her?
Just then, the scent of blood hit my nose, and I noticed the fresh wound on Finn’s lips.
“What happened to your mouth? Who hit you, when and why?”
Finn shifted his gaze.
I knew he was avoiding my eyes, and thinking of a lie to feed me.
Finally, he spoke.
“I fell down last night. I…..”
“Shut up!” I interrupted him.
“Do you think I’m stupid? Do you think I don’t know a blow mark when I see one?”
I raised my hand, ready to strike, until he told me where Selene was, but a guard rushed in just in time with a letter in his hand.
“Alpha,” he bowed.
“This just arrived.”
I let go of Finn roughly and snatched the letter from the guard.
I hurriedly broke the seal and read the contents with my eyes wide open.
“Your time is running out, make sure you don’t spend it searching for your beloved mate. She is in good
hands for now.”

Chapter 50
“What?” I gasped
How had she ended up in the hands of the same monsters we were going to throw her to
How had they gotten her? Where did they see her?
“You bastard!” I punched myself on my arm repeatedly till I broke down.
