Chapter 17
Josephine spent a long time recuperating.
Kathryn, feeling guilty for having encouraged Josephine to walk into the lion’s den in the first place, took the initiative to stay by her side and take care of her daily needs.
Kathryn rarely mentioned Nathaniel in front of her, and whenever she did, it was always with a barrage of sharp and biting insults.
Because of what happened with Nathaniel, she developed an aversion to handsome men, often declaring that good–looking guys were never any good.
With Kathryn’s companionship, Josephine gradually emerged from the
shadows.
At the beginning of April, she packed her luggage, preparing to return to the UK with Kathryn to continue her studies.
Edward accompanied her to the airport, reluctantly reminding her to take good care of herself.
Just as the two were about to go through security, a figure suddenly appeared in their line of sight.
Nathaniel, dressed in a loose hospital gown, staggered desperately toward her, paying no heed to anything else.
Kathryn quickly shielded Josephine behind her and shouted angrily, “Scumbag, why aren’t you dead yet!”
Nathaniel seemed not to hear her. His gaze passed over Kathryn and landed on Josephine, pleading bitterly:

“Josephine, please don’t go, okay? As long as you stay, I’m willing to give you everything I have!”
Josephine had never seen Nathaniel like this before.
He was humble and haggard, as if all his strength had been drained from
him.
She remained silent for a long time. Under Kathryn’s worried gaze, she squeezed her arm and walked straight up to Nathaniel.
“Josie…” Nathaniel reached out to her, but she coldly avoided his touch.
Looking into Nathaniel’s eyes filled with despair, she spoke softly:
“Do you know, I once loved you with all my heart, without holding anything back.”
“Do you remember when I was bullied, you stood up for me,
me, like a ray of light shining into my dark world? At that moment, I believed you were my salvation, the one I could entrust my life to.”
“Every moment I spent with you was a treasure to me. Even after I learned you had ulterior motives, I still deceived myself, hoping that maybe you had once truly cared for me.”
“But in the end, you still resolutely pushed me into an abyss from which I
could never return.”
“Nathaniel, I gave you chances, more than once.”
“Now, your chances are gone, and my love for you no longer exists.”
After speaking, Josephine turned and walked back to Kathryn, leaving Nathaniel with nothing but the sight of her determined back as she walked away, growing more and more distant.
Nathaniel stared fixedly at the figure receding into the distance.
Chapter 17
It wasn’t until Josephine had completely disappeared that he could no longer hold on, a metallic taste rising in his throat.
Before he could swallow, blood spurted from his mouth, staining the ground in front of him red.
Nathaniel’s body swayed, and he collapsed with a crash.

After returning to the UK, Josephine quickly integrated into campus life.
She joined several clubs that interested her, made new friends, and also attracted quite a few admirers.
The one who left the deepest impression on her was a boy named Royston Wheatley.
Unlike the other boys who were outgoing and enthusiastic, he was
extremely shy, and every time he spoke to her, his ears would turn bright red.
Because of this, he never crossed any boundaries and always maintained a comfortable distance with her.
Kathryn once thought about setting them up, but Josephine refused outright.
It was simply because her previous heartbreak had left her emotionally exhausted; she neither had the courage nor the energy to start a new relationship.
It wasn’t until winter arrived that the school organized a trip to see the aurora on a snowy night.
Royston mustered up his courage and approached Josephine, asking if she would like to be in the same group with him.

Royston was overjoyed, and his already clear eyes instantly sparkled like
the stars.
He instinctively reached out to take Josephine’s hand, but stopped halfway, awkwardly scratching his head and stammering, “I… I’ll take good care of you.”
Josephine smiled.
She thought that even if they couldn’t be a couple, it would still be nice to be friends with such an adorable boy.
