Chapter 6
touchers
Five years of a relationship with Kenyon made Marlene tough.
If it were two weeks ago, she’d be jealous of Thelma. But now, she could receive her calmly.
She served her a cup of coffee and said, “Ms. Glyn, please have some coffee. Mr. Burt is having a meeting. Please wait.”
Smiling, Thelma took the coffee from Marlene. Before Marlene knew it, it was all over her face.
“It’s hot. What are you doing?”
Her white outfit was wet instantly. Coffee dripped down her face and fell onto the floor. Marlene couldn’t be more embarrassed.
“You spilled coffee on me last time. This is payback. You don’t mind, right?”
Thelma smiled, “Get me another cup of coffee. Iced.”
Marlene wiped her face. Before she could speak, Kenyon’s voice came from behind her. “What are you doing here?”
Thelma went to him coquettishly and held his arm.
“Ken, your secretary has a temper. I asked her to get me a cup of coffee. She wouldn’t do it.”
Anyone with eyes could tell Thelma was making trouble for Marlene, but Kenyon didn’t say anything.

“Ken, you promised you’d accompany me to try on wedding dresses this afternoon, but you have a meeting. Can your secretary go with me? Marlene, what do you say?”
Of course, Marlene knew Thelma was up to no good. “Sorry, Ms. Glyn. I have work to do.”
“Ken,” Thelma drawled.
Kenyon frowned. “Your work can wait. Go with her.”
Thelma tormented Marlene for the next five hours.
It was scorching hot outside. She made Marlene go to and from tens of dessert stores.
In the jewelry stores, she made her carry a jewelry box weighing tens of kilograms. Her arms were sore. But still, Thelma wouldn’t let her put it down.
When it came to the shoes, Thelma claimed her feet had been scraped; she didn’t wanna try on those shoes. So, she made Marlene try them on in
her stead.
Marlene understood what Thelma was up to as soon as she put on the
shoes.
Thumbtacks had been put in the shoes. It hurt. When Marlene withdrew her legs, Thelma held her shins to push them back.
The pain made Marlene’s face turn pale instantly. The white shoes were
stained with blood.
Thelma laughed, “Does it hurt? Well, not enough for me. Marlene, Kenyon and I are getting married. Why won’t you stay out of our lives?”
Marlene was about to faint from the pain when the door was flung open.

“What are you doing?”
Kenyon showed up and saw everything.

The color drained from Thelma’s face. She threw herself into Kenyon’s arms and explained, “Ken, my feet have been scraped before. So, I asked Marlene to try on the shoes for me. Unexpectedly, there were thumbtacks in them…”
Marlene endured the pain to get her feet out of the shoes. Her soles were bloody. When she looked up, she met Kenyon’s cold eyes.
“It’s OK. I‘ compensate her. What matters is that you’re all right.
How ironic. Marlene bit her lower lip tightly. She pulled the thumbtacks out of her soles with a shaking hand. Several times, she almost fainted from the pain.
She was sweaty all over when the last thumbtack was pulled out.
She walked to Kenyon, leaving a blood streak on the floor. The pain was excruciating.
“I don’t want your compensation. Mr. Burt, give such a significant task to someone else next time. I’m just a secretary. I’m not up to it.”
Marlene limped out of the store. From behind, she looked so thin and
vulnerable.
Watching her leave, Kenyon felt a sting in his heart.
Just then, someone shouted, “Help! Ms. Glyn fainted!”
