Chapter 20
Due to the infection in his wound, Kenyon suffered from a persistent high fever. On top of that, he refused to cooperate with the doctors, and several times his fever became so severe that he fainted. In his delirium, he kept
calling Marlene’s name.
Sheila was at her wit’s end and, after much effort, managed to find
Marlene.
Wealth nourishes a person, and time had left no trace on Sheila–except for her eyes, which were red and swollen from crying, making them stand out starkly.
As soon as she saw Marlene, Sheila grabbed her hand and pleaded, “Marlene, I’m begging you to go see Ken. If this goes on, his life will be in danger. I won’t stand in the way of whatever is between you two anymore, and I’ll try to persuade his father as well. Please, just go see Ken, I’m begging you!”
But Marlene only smiled faintly and pulled her hand away from Sheila.
“Mrs. Burt, I am only Kenyon’s former secretary,‘
With that one sentence, she drew a clear boundary.
Before coming to see Marlene, Sheila had imagined many possible outcomes, but she had never expected Marlene to be so cold and indifferent.
“Marlene, I know Ken has feelings for you. He likes you. He was whipped by his father because of you.”
A faint smile appeared at the corner of Marlene’s lips, but facing her

“Mrs. Burt, Kenyon’s affection is not something precious to me, nor have I ever asked him to do anything for me. All those seemingly touching sacrifices are nothing but self–deception.”
“Mrs. Burt, please don’t come to me again. I have a boyfriend now, and I’m afraid he might misunderstand.”
Even though Sheila quickened her pace, she still couldn’t catch up with Marlene as she walked away.
Kenyon soon learned that Sheila had gone to see Marlene. A faint hope rose in his heart, but when he saw Sheila return alone, that sliver of hope was extinguished.
“Mom, what did she say?”
Sheila’s eyes flickered. “Marlene said she’s been busy with work lately and doesn’t have time to visit you. She told you to take good care of yourself.”
Hearing this, Kenyon only laughed, a mocking laugh. “Mom, you’re lying.”
Because Kenyon knew very well that once Marlene made up her mind about something, she would never look back.
During Kenyon’s hospitalization, Marlene’s life was peaceful. The new company was not as busy as her previous one, and there was rarely any need for overtime.
Marlene’s abilities were evident to all. Within just a month of joining, she had already closed a major deal.
At the celebration banquet, Gareth, his face flushed from drinking, put his arm around Marlene and said, “I’ve really found a treasure!”

Over the past month, Marlene had changed many of her long–standing work habits and gradually erased all traces of Kenyon from her life.
Those habits she once thought she could never break had quietly faded away over time..
Three days later, a shocking piece of news exploded across all of New York.
Kenyon’s company was exposed in a plagiarism scandal, instantly thrusting it into the eye of the storm. The company’s stock price plummeted again and again.
Such a swift and large–scale operation was hard to believe could happen without someone pulling the strings behind the scenes.
A colleague leaned over and said, “Marlene, did you hear? They say Kenyon was taken down by the Glyn family this time. It’s because he broke off the engagement with them, and the Glyn family was so furious that they decided to destroy him.”
Marlene’s gaze didn’t shift in the slightest; she continued to look at her
computer.
“Hey, I heard Kenyon broke off the engagement because he couldn’t forget someone. A lot of people are guessing it has something to do with that fight at the wedding banquet entrance. I saw the woman’s profile–though the photo was blurry, you could still tell she was a real beauty. That nose, that skull shape–anyone would say she’s outstanding. But Marlene, I feel like her profile looks a bit like yours?”
Marlene’s hands paused on the keyboard.
At that moment, the supervisor walked over and loudly forbade any more chatting. The colleague had no choice but to stop and awkwardly returned
to their seat.
